News Comments > Epic on Bulletstorm Sales
12. Re: Epic on Bulletstorm Sales Jul 23, 2011, 13:49 Ray Marden

It has been discounted on a more recurrent basis as of late - I purchased it for $12 from GG at the start of last month.

This was a $20-$30 game with a vastly inflated price tag. Additionally, this is not much of a game or shooter - just a giggle/point fest. Lastly, even accounting for the gameplay, the demo really left a bad impression with me while the actual game has been more fun.
Which, again, the price tag had a big part in.
Just killing things over and over and over and over and over,
Ray

Edit: I view DNF as silly/immature, but Bulletstorm comes off as moronic. One is trying to be humorous whereas the other is awkwardly funny due to how hard it is trying to prove its toughness (to say nothing of the point system...)

Obviously she's a gamer - somewhat - if she can deal with me.
Thanks, though ,

It gets better from there.

My wife showed interest in this so she went to pre-order the digital deluxe edition. As of 7PM EST, her digital preorder was being denied within minutes or her placing her preorder.

She got so irritated that she contacted customer service - who is obviously a paid lackey in India - and she was told that they were out of stock of the digital preorder, but that she should keep on trying every few hours.

Because a preorder of a game that is five-plus months away can't be accepted today?

With every new attempt being told that she is likely to get a copy?

To immediately be told that her order was arbitrarily canceled?

When this is a digital version of a game?

On the website that keeps track of stock and still shows this version as being in stock?

It's clear the jerks at BioWare don't care much about the market, especially note the end user. And what is the most valid excuse? A server glitch or capacity issue? If you cannot even handle a one time transaction, I have no faith in either company being able to maintain a MMORPG...
And has anything been done so far? Nope!

Same thing - between the two default selections in the first game, the female character seemed more appealing.

Having played both games as the female character, I find her a more interesting character and her voice acting is definitely superior to that of the male actor.
He just comes off like your typical action guy.

News Comments > Blizzard's Real ID Testing Live
41. Re: Blizzard's Real ID Testing Live Jul 15, 2011, 18:12 Ray Marden

Because, if you're playing with friends, you routinely play on different servers, right?

Admittedly, some people fall through the cracks, but not a whole lot. And more than anything, the frustrating part is that this will, yet again, just become something fairly mundane that Blizzard, the operators of the most successful MMORGP, will tack on a fee for (note that this is only in testing with hints of a premium option.)

With the requirement of sharing the Real ID and its various limitations...
I'll use my common name, but I don't like it showing my legal name.
It just seems like a non-issue. It is a neat little optin, but nothing groundbreaking. Anybody that was that deeply involved with their WoW friends would have already moved to the same server or (as usual) paid for a server transfer. Otherwise, I have no intention of paying extra for it nor do the majority of guild members I play with.

I guess it is good for the people that are just picking up the game now that happened to join completely random servers and that happen to attribute this with far more value than most.

Shrugging my shoulders,
Ray

I am certainly interested - I have thoroughly enjoyed Arkane Studios' releases and Antonov is a bonus.

Harvey Smith, though...I am looking for him to be the one to mess this up.

Otherwise, for what I was imagining in my head, I am not sure the (admittedly early and artwork) image holds up. It reminds me of Bioshock mixed with Half-Life and even made me start thinking about Prey 2. That is not a negative mark against it - it is just a bummer when the first image that shapes the world does not strike me as being new or exciting.
Can somebody make a good Thief game?

I played the two prior games when they were $20 or less so I just bit on AC:B at the same price.

Edit: Really? The same issues with mouse acceleration? REALLY? Sigh.
Everybody was raving about it so here is to hoping I am wrong.

News Comments > Windows L.A. Noire This Fall
44. Re: Windows L.A. Noire This Fall Jun 23, 2011, 17:40 Ray Marden

I was eyeing the discounted console versions ($40 price + $25 gift card = win,) but I guess I will wait for a PC version. Well, a discounted PC version - I'm not paying $60.00 for a late port.

Otherwise, it seems like L.A. Noire would be good for a one time play through the story, but I've heard some repeated complaints - it's linear, has no replay, is not that dynamic, has an empty world, it all boils down to waiting for the controller (console) to vibrate, etc.

I guess I will have to wait and see, but I still have a hard time getting really excited for this one from what I have seen and heard thus far.
Seems like a Rokstar version of Heavy Rain that looks like GTA, but isn't.
Noting everybody commends the character speech mapping,

News Comments > Morning Consolidation
7. Re: Morning Consolidation Jun 21, 2011, 13:16 Ray Marden

Maybe some third party company will make a really fantastic game that really utilizes the system's strengths, but I have a lot of the same concerns:

  • It is only as powerful as current generation systems.

  • Specifics are somehwat slim and the release date is sometime in 2012.

  • The next Sony/Microsoft systems are not that far away.

  • Ports of existing games will be identical for the most part.

  • The Wii U may have fantastic gameplay at some point, but only for titles designed specifically around it.
  • Equal or inferior ports will not make the system excel, ports of the next generation systems will have to be scaled back, and you cannot readily port a Wii U game - at least one that fully, truly utilizes the pad screen - to the next Sony and Microsoft systems.

  • Same system multiplayer is specifically hindered on this system. One pad for me and the rest of you get those old, crappy Wii remotes.

  • No DVD or Blu-Ray playing support? I doubt I will ever have a stand along player for that; one more reason for my to buy a competitor's product.

  • Given Nintendo's track record, how many games will throw in a weak, sloppy use of the pad-troller? I love personal control when it makes sense, but not when it is tedious. I don't want to wiggle my hand just to cut some grass, perform the same move for the thousandth time, etc.

  • Admittedly, the Sony and Microsoft systems are already deep in development, but with the Wii U a good year or more away, this may still give them some slim possibility of tweaking their systems to be more comparable.

  • Where is the system? How far away is it? How much will those pads cost when one is broken? Where are the games? Where are the third party games? Where are the third party games actually running in Wii U hardware?

  • Again, I do think some neat things could be done, but the system is equal to dying systems with regards to power and any good games will really need to fracture the market - you either make a Sony/Microsoft game or a Wii U game. Otherwise, we're back to the crappy port games.
I just wish more attention was paid to the system and games than the pad.
Wondering if it even tracks things better than the lackluster Wii remote,

I am hardly an id fan......but I would love to play a true sequel to Quake.

I concede the latter games had better engines and were more popular for multi-player, but the Quake world was fairly interesting (it was more than just another space marin...) and, even if only because they did not know what they couldn't do, had some really interesting, quirky level design.
    Yes please!

News Comments > RAGE Changing Windows
    21. Re: RAGE Changing Windows Jun 16, 2011, 17:36 Ray Marden

    It's basically smart tearing.

If you aren't doing a full refresh at the indicated framerate, it will attempt to tear at the top of the screen (you finish the slow frame and tear on the new one) and the game runs at a lower resolution/detail to help compensate.

It is giving the developers more control over the performance/graphics and attempting to tear at the top of the screen rather than in the middle or bottom of the screen where you would be more likely to notice it. They are also pushing this because they are capping games at certain framerates and tying certain mechanics (typically animation) to set amount of frames.
I know there is a good Kingpin joke in here somehwere...

Meh - it just sounds like more managed tearing. Can we say this is dynamic inferior visuals?

After all, what happens if you don't have v-sync enabled? When it goes to refresh the screen...it either makes it all the way or it does not. All they're doing here is tweaking what happens when they cannot make it the full way. Dynamically, until that refresh is completed, you get some crappy visuals.

Honestly, I don't enable v-sync for the framerate. I enable it for the visual conformity. Now I can have a v-sync option that does the complete opposite of what I want it to do. Gee, thanks.
Don't call this v-sync. It is no-sync plus.

I was wondering about this game - it did not seem like they were doing much marketing for it. And given the early reviews, it looks like this will not be a purchase until it receives a big discount.
The second time around, DNF doesn't seem so bad. At least early on.

They needed to improve the previous layout (better interest results, easier searching, more information, more consistent genre grouping, etc.) instead of rolling out this new layout.

It's basically just big 'ol images of the front packaging. However, from an accessibility viewpoint, it gives me less movies on the screen, less information on the movies, and it decreased my available search and grouping information.
    The epitome of failure.

Also, EA pushes aggressive pricing through its Facebook game page. These tend to be open for only a few hours at a time and are primarily for purchases through the EA store, but these are typically discounts of 50% or more.
And all based upon people "liking" the deals.
