News Comments > RAGE PC Texture Fix Coming
119. Re: RAGE PC Texture Fix Coming Oct 16, 2011, 20:43 Ray Marden

Being an id game, I would generally expect good sales.

On a more personal basis, the more casual-style game players I know were less interested in Rage and were instead planning to purchase Arkham City and some game called Battlefield 3.
They already went nuts for GoW 3 and Resistance 3.
Mostly looking towards Skyrim, Uncharted 3, and hoping ToR doesn't suck,

"Yosemite Sam," the fact that you have to resort to insults speaks immensely of your character and ability to have an adult conversation.

We understand the idea of a megatexture, but we are discussing the obvious trade offs that have been made.

Again, I would assert that there is a distinct lack of variety and depth to the worlds. How much of the game could be written off as a post-apocalyptic desert wasteland. Admittedly, that is broad and generic, but would give people a fair idea of what this game has to offer. Look at how often the game has you replay the same level or how confined and limited the actual playable area is. You want to go on about the unique megatexture, but I would like to actually explore it and play through it rather than have it be blocked off by one of the many, many invisible walls or foot-high barriers.

Yes, the "outside" area can be one map, but the game is further split up into various other areas where you have to load entirely new data...which often bears striking resemblence to the "outside" area you just came from (or is a single room you have no interaction with)...which the game will likely make you play through a few times...which will likely appear to have a lot of unique world but which is immediately confined by the various invisible walls and arbitrary barriers...

Yes, you have a limited selecton of NPCs styles and then some minor variants of them. And what makes them unique? The majority of enemies will stay behind one piece of cover, will not chase after the player character, can be easily sniped with various weapons (other than the sniper rifle,) and even verbally announce their retreat, identifying that you have killed an arbitrary number of enemy NPCs and have essentially cleared that section of the level. Or would you like to discuss the other type of enemy NPC that just rushes you and which is easy fodder for the shotgun? Only the mini-boss battles have much energy to them, but again, they are way too easy and straight forward.

List all the NPCs if you wish. I can talk about how pointless they are, how little they add to the world, how easy the sidequests are, how the story quests are given as an offer when they are mandatory to actually completing the game, how many of them remain in the same place doing the same thing at the same time of the day over and over.

Again, I would make the case for how the graphical effects - of which you stat the game has "all" of them - are actually utilized. I am talking more about the artistic design and gameplay implementation than pure technical mertis. Even for the things you tried to discuss, what of the vast discrepancies in texture detail? The great, yet underutilized vehicle mechanic? The generic shooter mechanic? The lackluster, abruptly ending story? The rough implementation of PC controls?

I am unable to find where I stated "texture looks blocky when I stare at walls, game sux lol." Even if completely imagined, I find it troubling you come to this conclusion after the various points I and others have discussed.

You like the game. Great. I do not think it set any new standards, at least not good ones or without significant, vastly undesirable, trade offs. Nor do I think it is a profound blending of components from other games. I have yet to be blow away by the game. Even when I do see something that looks really nice or which I can see some potential for, one of the game's many rough edges or harsh juxtapositions rears its ugly head.

For whatever it is worth, I have played a number of games and I can think of a number that had better modeling, consistent graphical fidelity, fun, depth, challenge to the shooting, better integration of the vehicle mechanic, shipped with far less issues, had a rich story, etc. Rage is not terrible, but it certainly is not what I was hoping for, not what I believe PC gamers were being sold, and certainly not an amazing game.
If you think this game is that good, I beg you to go play better games.
Guessing this post, too, is all about block textures....?,

But id made a FPS. What was the chance that people were going to look at things up close from a direct, first person perspective? Again, I would assert that id's design was a failure in regards to the technology it was utilizing.

From a broader sense, you're arguing for what? A wide range of low-resolution textures that should only be viewed from ten feet away? Even looking at the argument of variety - which I admit can be a strong one - did id really deliver on this? Do we see a wide range of environments? Graphical effects? Enemies? Fantastic images? A completely original, groundbreaking world? Or is this just a game of brown and gray walls, dust-filled landscape, rocks, and rubble? Great, I have 100 versions of a gray, low-resolution wall. I would have much rather taken 50 higher resolution walls in this case or, putting the resolution issue aside, a true variety of walls: 10 gray, 10 red, 10 orange, 10 blue, 10 graffiti, etc. Further, given how confined this game is, what was the benefit of the so-called variety? Is there no appreciation for the actual gameplay of a game???
Derp derp.
At the end of the day, that is my core issue with the tech. Presuming it is ready for today's hardware, did id actually utilize it effectively? Only towards the end of the game do you see *some* inkling of variety. But again, that speaks to a game held back by its technology, a poor game design, and/or an engine that has such a steep learning curve that the game suffered from it.

Thinking the tech trumped the game (yet again for id,)

I know this is not a popular opinion, but Crysis 2 looked really good to me. I realize it traded off some things, but the game repeatedly impressed me with its consistently high graphic fidelity.

It saddens me how inconsistent Rage is. Who cares if a few textures are higher resolution if the rest of them suck? Or the modeling is terrible? Or some models were simply disregarded in favor of a crappy low-res texture? Or you replay the same levels over and over? Or the shooting is weak? The story is absent? The game has a strong vehicle system which is only used to quickly go from point A to point B?

Even when looking at all the detail in the world...that is all you will ever do - just look at it. In a lot of ways, id made another confined shooter, but now with a bigger, more detailed sky box.
What does Rage bring to the table? Some moments of high-res textures?
Thinking the true lovers of Rage need to play more games,

This looks interesting, but is much less original compared to DE. Further, the gameplay looks a bit to simplistic - you just breach everything you can see and bullets aim themselves. I came off like one giant "I'm cool, therefore I win" fest.

Definitely interesting, but it does not seem like an action packed shooter nor a deep stealth game. Just breach and blow. Also, the numerous HUD prompts felt tedious in a small video window; I could see those getting really annoying when full screen (great idea, but the should streamline it.)
It only reminds me of Syndicate in the crudest possible way.
Going to keep an eye on it,
Ray

Like everybody else, this is too much for me to purchase it - not for some disconnected, likely short side story. I'll gladly pay for a sequel or extension of the game, but this better be damn amazing, else I will never buy it until it hits that $5.00 sale range.
Going for more than $10.00 was stupid.

The problem is that AMD just now has a chip equal to what Intel was offering nearly a year ago and without a price advantage.

And you want to talk about a roadmap, but again, Intel has spent the last year working on improvements...which it does not need to release. If any when AMD finally gets a better version of this chip, Intel could readly be set to phase out the quad cores from the retail market as it shifts to its own version of high core count chips.

I was not upgrading either way because of how amazing the i7-2600k has been and due to the (aged) consoles taking the lead, but I was hoping for some type of bump, something to push down Intel's prices, something to get me excited about. If there was some type of amazing price benefit, I might have upgraded my wife's machine. Instead, AMD built a time machine and went back a year.
Sandy Bridge is halfway through and AMD just got started.
Thinking that is full of /fail,

The chip is not outright terrible, but...there is no reason to buy one.

For nearly the same price, I have a 2600k that overlocks to 4.8GHz on just air cooling. And this chip has been in my possession for over eight months now...
To say nothing of the much more sensible 2500k.
Clearly set for the next year,

I was playing through the mutant sewer/hospital, easily the most iconic portion of the game's advertising, and some of the internal corridor areas have terrible geometry and texturing - stuff that is worse than what Doom 3 had back in the day.

In the same area, the game actually has a portion where you need to power an electric lock to a gate that is blocking an escalator - an escalator that has only a 2-3 foot high barrier on the side. Of course, with the main character acting like his lower appendages have been amputated, this is a challenge.

Likewise, the boss in the area has a completely exposed brain. You can shoot endlessly into its open, exposed gray matter and nothing happens. However, shoot a rocket at the same area - a rocket that has such a small explosion area that it will not hurt you while you are standing just a few feet away - and you take off a third of the boss' health.

The game is not entirely like this, but it gives you an impression of how utterly confused and backward it can be at times.
You could think id would know how important a consistent art style is.
Wondering how many times I will be forced to play through the same levels,

If you can wait, you will get more bang for your buck by waiting for the end of year update - you can either go into a whole new line or buy one of the "old" cards at a discounted rate.

The 6950 is a good step up (20%?) from the 5850, but I upgraded because my wife needed a new system - she took my system at the time and I build a new system. At the time, the 6950 was the best sub-$300 (single) card available.
Just like how I'll probably be giving her the 6950 when the new ones ship.
Waiting for Skyrim to wash out the bitterness of Rage,

I purchased the Sapphire model based solely upon it being in stock and there being a manufacturer rebate back at the start of the year. It's worked fine for me and has not presented any of the minor glithces my prior 5850 had.

As for the 2GB version, excluding something like Rage, there really is not much of a real word gain over the 1GB model. Otherwise, just make sure you have sufficient power and your case has space to fit a wide card. I never tried to unlock it.

This is the September comparison, but you might want to check out the article from Tom's:

Cooler and less power needed than NvIdIa'S equivalent.
Wondering when the next update of cards is coming,
Ray

I suspect they are playing a semantics game. Note the "inherently" in the statement.

Yes, with v-sync disabled, the screen refreshes as much as it can whether it'a a full or partial (tearing) update.

But enabling v-sync does not cut your framerate in half - the game simply refreshes the entire screen as often as it can.

If you have a slower computer, v-sync probably does make the overall experience more smooth, albeit with a sh*t ton of tearing. However, I would gladly take a v-sync experience equivalent to 40hz, 50hz or 58hz instead of capping the game's framerate to 30 FPS.

Now, as for it being a performance cheat for the game that was designed explicitly for 60hz realtime auto-configuration, that's a different matter.
Herp derp herpa derp.

So...patch notes that contain a blatant lie?

A game that mandates a 60hz refersh rate - tearing, texture resolution, graphical quality be damned?

And, if you don't give it 60hz, the game is going to limit PC gamers to 30hz?

All this aside, I gave the new patch a quick whirl and it seems to work, at least on my system (6950 2GB & Win 7 64-bit) - lighting appears consistent across all textures, NPCs are not shaking, ammo is positioned in my weapons, etc. Additionally, the game seems to run even faster than it did before.

Tempted to say id should go console-only,

The new drive is actually causing me far more issues than the earlier one did.

I went from having flickering flags to having some flags becoming overly bright, NPCs that stutter/flicker, random textures through the world being fully lit, and issues with the ammo compnent of my guns floating above the actual weapon. /fail

Performance seems better, but it is a visual downgrade. However, they seem to be working for some people so it may be a model/OS issue.

Not feeling a burning desire to stop playing other games to play Rage,
Ray Which basically means that it is mediocre.

I will pick up Hard Reset on discount some day, but it is really linear and, for wanting to be a straight foward shooter, the emphasis on using the environment to kill enemies slows down the action.

In a lot of ways, the game feels full of contradictions. Let's try to have a lot of things to shoot at...but let's put them in a small area. Let's put a low limit on the number of weapons they can have...but then make them turn into various different versions. Let's try to make a detailed world...but remove any real exploration or story. Let's just make a pure shooter...but let's group of herds of enemies so you can use the environment against them.

Back to Rage, I bashed Doom 3 as a failure, but Rage is actually going to be the point in time that id gave up. On a technical front, things can be pretty, but Carmack has no appreciation for consistency - he thinks it is fine to have tearing, have parts of the world change in front of your eyes, and does not want PC gamers to have configuration control over the game. To have this many issues on both sides of the GPU market for a game that has been in development this long is just sad.

Though the game can be pretty, it has not blown me away. More than that, even when it does look quite good, the mish mash of texture resolutions mars the overall experience. The constaint limitations on exploration (weak jumping, invisible walls, confined areas) just reinforces how little the player is given. It's sad that the 360 degree map has to highlight the little portions of the game you are actually allowed to play in. Given how small some of these levels are, it further detracts from any visual achievements (that's all I get for this small area???)

As for the gameplay, it is a simple shooter and nothing else. If something rushes me, I just use my shotgun, else everything just stays behind cover and I can just snipe with my pistol. Why the poor weapon interface? Why are there invisible walls even in the confined quest zones? Why can't I loot the weapons and ammo that the hostile NPCs had? Crafting the same few items over and over and over and over is tedious and adds nothing to the simple shooter gameplay - screw it, I will not even bother unless I have to. Why can't I even loot those NPCs at all? What was the story again? Why do I care about these people? Why am I helping them by going on a murderous rampage? How many times will they reuse the same level? Why does it take three direct shots to the head to kill this guy? Why does this remind me of Fallout and Borderlands? Why include the vehicle portion at all when it exists just to get you to the next limited, confined quest zone?

And screw the whole PC versus console thing. A gaming PC is vastly superior to a five year old console, but I understand why companies may focus on the consoles as their target tech level. But that does not explain why the vastly superior platform has so many rough edges or, with the bar being set so low, why it is not incredibly polished. Tech aside, this doesn't explain what the hell this company was doing for all this time. Carmack was working on the engine - I get that. But what were the designers and the rest of the team doing?

It is a sometimes nice looking game marred with various obvious graphical tradeoffs. On the gameplay front, it is a really stupid shooter that is not particularly unique, deep, fast, action packed, or fun. But it is a straight forwarded shooter.
That took how long to make???
Stating this is when id just stopped caring,
Ray

Link doesn't work for me (and, yes, I am too lazy to hunt it down on my own.)

For whatever it is worth, the new Rage-tweaked drivers from 10/04/11 seem to work more or less fine on my 6950 (2GB.) Currently, I only noticed that a flag here or there loses its brightness for a split second, but no other errors so far.

I haven't tweaked with the settings so far other than adding in the launch parameter in Steam to enable v-sync - I otherwise have it running at 1920x1200 without any AA.

I'm not sure how Foolmac programmed the game to hit its 60hz cap, but the game was nearly unplayable without v-sync enabled. And I would almost argue it was a case of the game running too fast - things were choppy as all hell in close quarters, but stabilized (relatively) in the big open areas. Turning on v-sync, it runs like butter in both types of regions.
The game sucks, though. That has nothing to do with video, though.
Edit: Is this what you were linking? http://tinyurl.com/3bwz4mt

I am only installing the game today due to Amazon shipping this a day late (/wrist.)

I have heard numerous negative things about the release and I have my own negative response before even playing the game. Even after I installed the game from the three DVDs, I went to launch it from Steam and it has decided that it needs to download another 9GB of data...
