News Comments > Mass Effect 3 Ships; Review Roundup
39. Re: Mass Effect 3 Ships; Review Roundup Mar 6, 2012, 12:30 Ray Marden

I guess it comes down to the fine details - how things are presented, how epic things feel, how much they draw me in, how it plays, etc. - but I am concerned that this is just another re-release of the first game.

ME: Start from nothing, go build a team, go to an endgame fight.

ME2: Start from death, build a team, go to an endgame fight.

ME3: Start from a weak spot, build a team, go to an endgame fight.

I played the first two games and they were okay, but certainly not the amazing works of art that some people make them out to be - the story feels too limited and it is not a particularly strong, deep RPG or shooter. To date, the AI of the teammates has been fairly lacking as well.

Either way, here is to hoping they got the mix right this time. If not, I guess this will just be version 3.0 of the behind cover shooter release.

I have not read the reviews in detail - please, please, please, please, please tell me that planet scanning has been removed...
Worst part of the entire series.
Wondering what part of the story needs to be purchased to be seen,
Ray

Well, toss the 7850 in the garbage bin, but the 7870 doesn't look too bad. However, nViDiA is "shipping" in a week, I am eagerly awaiting the reviews on that line.
The money is just burning in my pocket!
Likely buying either the 7850 or whatever Nvidia's card is,

News Comments > id on DOOM 4 Images
78. Re: id on DOOM 4 Images Mar 3, 2012, 00:37 Ray Marden

Graphically, id gave up on any real type of consistency outside of framerate. I don't care if image A looks great if image B looks like total crap. I would far prefer a game that looks consistently good with a good framerate. Toss in real time degradation of graphics, in-screen texture updating, and numerous drivers bugs, it really feels like a graphics failure.

Can you say fugly?

Even looking directly at the "unique texture" argument, a number of textures are repeated, a number of zones are repeated, a number of NPCs are repeated, etc. Further, the unique textures are greatly absent from the actual play zones. You get some nice vistas or sky boxes, but you cannot actually go and look at any of those things - your character is stuck on the narrow, linear path.

But, as others have noted, the game failed at reaching greatness for so many reasons other than the graphics. The bugs? The AI? The confined gameplay? The pointless world hubs? The good, but completely underutilized vehicle component? The weak gun play? The terrible story? The weak UI? Broken economy? Boring gameplay?
The game was weak, and graphically, the highs did not surpass the lows.
Thinking Quake is the last id game I really enjoyed playing,
Ray

It showed up on my list last night and I tried to run it, but it downloaded for a little bit and then told me that it had to convert my download to a new file format.

It ran overnight for eight hours and ended up doing nothing at all - I canceled it and moved on.
Fail.

News Comments > DOOM 4 Screenshots? Cancellation Rumor Denied
31. Re: DOOM 4 Screenshots? Cancellation Rumor Denied Feb 29, 2012, 06:59 Ray Marden

I hope those are fakes and/or having nothing to do with Doom.

Some do look really crude, but others do look like the crap Rage puts out. If these are from D4, they should cancel the game - it does not feel like it fits in with the portions of Doom that I love and looks like more cluttered, low-resolution, confined, lifeless Rage levels.

Do they even understand what people (or at least I) loved about Doom? It certainly wasn't about having a darkness engine or shooting stuff in a burned down city...
Can you imagine how boring the monsters would be?
Horribly unimpressed,

News Comments > Hydrophobia Developer Going Under
14. Re: Hydrophobia Developer Going Under Feb 28, 2012, 19:03 Ray Marden

It is unfortunate, but this is not surprising. I bought Hydrophobia during one of the preorder sales and the game was actually pretty bad.

Even bypassing the early bugs that would prevent it launching on my system (Win 7 x64,) the water effects could have been better, the gameplay was really stiff, the combat was out of place, there were lots of little geometry glitches, etc. I just looked at Steam right now and I did not even play it for one hour before I gave up on it.

The game was not junk, but it felt like it really lacked focus, was too rough, and the developers obviously needed a little bit more time and/or money to make a much better game.
It had some potential, but all the little failures grew tiring.
Shrugging,
Ray

News Comments > U.S. Retail Video Game Sales Down 34% in January
4. Re: U.S. Retail Video Game Sales Down 34% in January Feb 9, 2012, 23:15 Ray Marden

I admit that the baseline quality has increased, but where are the really amazing AAA releases? Or brand new genres? Epic experiences?

I have so many games now that I have purchased in the $5-$20 range and, though they are generally worth their price, I really cannot bother to finish them or, in some cases, install/play them. There are actually a handful of games that, even at this price, I feel burned for purchasing due to how flawed they are.
Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands for example...
I raid in WoW, socialize in ToR, and get my RPG groove on in Skyrim. In contrast, $60 for games with five hour play times or seriously flawed mechanics are not remotely interesting. Even looking at the various releases, I have all four systems for their unique titles, but those are fewer and farther between. When looking at my preferred platform, PC, I am tired of being called a pirate and get late or crappy ports.

I am following all the various sequels (ME3, MP3, B2, TR, M:LL, D3, H:A, BI, etc.,) but what are the new, exciting games I am looking forward to? Uhh...

Liking gaming, but loving many, many fewer releases,
Ray

News Comments > Skyrim Hi-Rez Pack & Creation Kit
61. Re: Skyrim Hi-Rez Pack & Creation Kit Feb 7, 2012, 19:17 Ray Marden

Yeah, it looks like Steam is having issues and/or there are multiple files.

Steam says it has completed a download, I run the game, and there are still textures missing, but less than were missing before. I've restarted Steam two other times and have experienced the same thing - it does to download a file (though smaller and smaller each time,) I run the game, and a few more textures have appeared.

I'm jut not sure why Steam is saying it has finished when it obviously has not, at least not all of the file(s.)

Otherwise, once they do show up, nothing looks drastically different, but they are sharper. It doesn't seem to be killing performance either and there don't seem to be any other side effects (missing textures aside.) This is a much better texture exerience than that joke called Rage.
Have I mentioned that id sucks?

Doh - this seems broken on my 2GB 6950.

The game loads and plays fine, but I now seem to be missing textures for most clothing and weapons. Nothing like going into towns or dungeons and seeing people walking around in a bluish-purple non-texture.

Edit: Speak of the devil. As I restart Steam, it is downlading a new file.
Regardless, still better than anything id did.
Hoping a Steam restart or a patch will fix this,

34. Re: RAGE OS X Released; Windows Version Patched Feb 3, 2012, 19:02 Ray Marden

This patch - just like id - is a joke.

You still have the crappy low-resolution textues slopped on a low-polygon world, but now with increased noise and wildly erratic framerates.

I would almost argue that it makes things look worse - far away things look unnaturally sharp and the image noise while moving is distracting. And it's all moot anyway since I am still seeing low resolution textures being applied to really low resolutions items around the edge of the screen in realtime.

Toss in the confined areas, disconnected racing component, the recycling of levels, quirky menu system, underutilized world hub, weak weapons, stupid crafting system, broken economy, crude architecture, and abrupt ending - this was easily the biggest disappointment of 2011.
It is no Skyrim.
Wondering if a better developer can give me a sequel to Quake or a real Doom,
Ray

But...you get performance equivalent to much older cards at a current day premium price. Where are the significant updates in performance? It's bad enough that the consoles are holding back the entire PC market, but the industry isn't even trying to improve the technology that much - they just want you to get a second, third, or even fourth card.

Case in point, I have been playing on my current system (2600K @ 4.8GHz and a 6950 2GB) for a year now. A year. My wife needs a new system so I am going to give her this one and I am looking to buy a new one in the next month or two.

But...I am almost looking at buying the exact same system. For a single monitor user, I have no reason to spend for any more of a card. And that is an entire year later.

Meanwhile, once that new generation of console comes out, even with their older hardware, I am sure I will need to upgrade both PC systems to run multi-platform releases. Go figure.
Am I just waiting for mega multi-core CPUs to kill off GPUs?
Hoping Nvidia will put out something faster, not just bigger,

See how easy it is to use the employees?
There are a few exceptions for volunteer work to government agencies and non-profits or excess hours not being paid at a higher rate, but this is not one of those scenarios.

A number of people do have bad passwords, but go look at the studies on the current crop of multi-core CPUs and GPUs can quickly break through any alpha-numeric strings in ever shrinking periods of time. With no other security in place, a password is only a minor nuisance.
It doesn't take much.
Even if you have a "good" password, how many companies protect them well?

Unpaid overtime is illegal (for non-salary workers,) but it is quite common at businesses, particularly those in certain industries.

Typically, you will see it as a result of naive newer employees or as a result of hostile management. Just set unrealistic work goals, send out memos talking about you want a workforce that will get the job done, not just leave at the end of day, and then make it known that you are unhappy with people have overtime - this will happen every time. For lower income individuals, you can toss in threats of no longer having employment for the same results.
See "crunch" time. There is no valid reason for this to be routine.
Finding most companies have some level of this,

News Comments > SWTOR Beta Patch, More on Ability Delay Patching
12. Re: SWTOR Beta Patch, More on Ability Delay Patching Jan 7, 2012, 21:18 Ray Marden

I think it is a lot of little things, really.

I average a ping in the range of 25ms-30ms, but it is not uncommon to notice small items here and there - abilities that don't respond, characters ths show up in one location and then teleports to another, etc.

All that said, the game just launched and this is not a-typical for any MMOG. The only points where it really, really sucks is when you are trying to get some of the more difficlt datacrons. My wife and I had one today where we were both able to routinely get my Jedi Sentinal to make the required jumps (on both systems,) but her Jedi Sage took us a good half hour or so to complete (again, on both systems) because her toon seemed to have some type of issue with this specific jump.

Otherwise, some of the mechanics just need to be tweaked. My toon is built around a buffing mechanic that takes 4-5 mobs to build up the focus (combo points) for, but this is counter-intuitive to the rest of my burst damage moves and/or how quickly enemies die. Further, though I am not yet max level nor have I raid geared, I miss a lot. Given how my character is built around mechanics similar to energy and combo points, missing frequently can throw off my entire rotation. Just from a "WTF" perspective, some of my most devastating moves rarely - rarely - ever hit their targets.

But outside of datacrons, noticeable lag is not significant, at least not on my server. Note, though, that some of the server populations are out of whack - on nights where my server has no queue, I have see other east-coast servers with two-plus hour queues. I would imagine performance issues are more significant on those servers.
Now, to just tweak the UI a tad...
Edit: A lot of animations and smaller items are pushed to the local client, but the servers can lag now and then. When comparing our two screens, every now and then they will show completely different positions of various items.

Down to the last handful of quests on Nar Shadaa,
Ray

News Comments > The Old Republic Stats
28. Re: The Old Republic Stats Dec 27, 2011, 16:35 Ray Marden

My initial impressions stand - they brought the single-player RPG aspect (at least in KotOR terms) to the MMOG world, but there has been no reason to interact with anybody yet.

The combat is okay, though inferior to WoW's, and I still have no idea what the end game will be like. We're level 22 right now so we have access to the space ship which has helped open up the world slightly, but the planets feel a bit confined and, though fun for the first handful of times, the space combat ends up being another grind.

I will not stop raiding in WoW, but I want to play ToR during non-raid times and I actually have an idea of what my character is doing while leveling unlike any toon I have in Azeroth. More than anything, they need to make a number of fixes and tweaks right now - the AH is cumbersome, slicing has broken the currency values, some professions are complete money sinks, combat mechanics are not entirely clear, quest rewards are all over the place, harvesting frequently beaks companion AI, a number of (non-heroic) quests are resetting themselves, quests that don't show up today are magically available tomorrow, taxi cabs/anchors are placed chaotically, at least half of all the archaeology spawns cannot be looted ($@%$#,) etc.

Long term end game is still the unknown. These games are based around grinding to a certain extent, but I am concerned that ToR might enjoy the grind a bit too much - gear up your main, gear up your companion, gear up all your companions, gear up your ship, grind out commendations, grind out commendations per planet, grind out light/dark side, modify every gear piece, modify every gear piece with a handful of different items, gring out credits for mount skills, grind out space combat, etc.

We really are having a blast leveling up, but other than playing once on the Empire side, we are still not sure what we would be doing after hitting the level cap. With the low player population on each shard, there being no real need to ask for help from other players, and the limited communication and grouping options, we are not really interacting with anybody, not making any friends or acquaintances. I definitely care about my character's leveling story, but I don't feel any connection to the overall world.
Again, give me the leveling of ToR and the raiding of WoW.
Loving and hating holocron hunting,
Ray

News Comments > On The Old Republic Queues
42. Re: On The Old Republic Queues Dec 23, 2011, 10:40 Ray Marden

I hate EA, but this is also the smoothest launch (from my limited perspective) that I have experienced to date. As for the queues, there is something really broken with how they are assigning the players or they forewent basic caps. I have yet to experience any queue during peak hours though I can attest to there being low population servers while others list queues of 3+ hours.

As for the game, just as in the beta, I am enjoying it so far. I care more about the world in this MMOG than any other I have played to date and I definitely feel like this is a continuation of the generic KotOR model.

I am still low level, though, so all my concerns remain - will there be an end game, does the game ever really open up to a vast universe, will professions ever be a primary focus, can they keep up with constant content updates, will they streamline the UI, will the improve group questing/instancing, etc.

I have various hopes for where this will go, but if nothing else, I am expecting to play through the game twice, Republic and Empire respectively, for a quasi online/group/single-player game. As to whether or not I actually remain subscribed to the game, it all depends on what there is to do. For now, I raid (only) in WoW and then go play ToR for an enjoyable game. Ultimately, I wish there was a game with the combat/raids of WoW and the story/gameplay of ToR.
ToR's endgame will decide its fate, else I am awaiting Titan.
Finding the Diablo 3 beta somewhat plain,
Ray
