I am all about higher resolution and/or better compression than what we currently have. Watching stuff on the monitor is okay, but there is definitely room for improvement. Otherwise, Blu-Rays consistently whallop the "HDTV" signal that the cable company puts out; some of the premium channels are not too bad, but everything else varies from show to show, channel to channel.

More than anything, I want something, anything, to drag the monitor manufacturers, screaming and kicking, to push out cheaper, higher than 1080p monitors!
My 27" monitor is lower resolution than my 24" monitor. Wah wah.
Tired of seeing pixels getting streeeeeeeeeeeeetched,
Ray

Edit: Creston, get some glasses.

If both games came out in 2011, I would agree that A:MR is the "better" game. However, that pesky decade gets in the way of things. In 2000, AMA did far more for me than A:MR did in 2011.
The time of release obviously factors into things...
If people think it is a great game, more power to them. However, it left me wanting - for the time, it felt a bit clunky, the art design did not amaze me, there were many other games I would recommend over it, I wanted far more freedom and range, etc.

Looking for more,
Ray

You all wanted a patch. You got your patch. We patched out the ability to access the debug mode and play it single-player!

Yeah, stolen from Reddit.
EA just keeps on telling lies.
Ashamed at how mad Cliffy B. is at us for not giving EA even more money,

I love me some Thief, but..........when your first two items of change are "less gothic" and "more action," it is not a good feeling.

Can nobody make a good sequel to Thief 2?

I will keep an eye on this, but I am not feeling too hopeful. Looking at some of the screenshots from GI, it reminds me of Dishonored and the talk of standing in groups conjures images of AC. Even if they played Thief, did they understand it?
Well, they did say they were going to "fix" the series.
Rest in peace, Looking Glass Studios. Rest in peace.

Going to wait and see,
Ray

Edit: Do we at least get rope arrows?

Sad to say, but I would rather they skipped it. Or had somebody else do it.

I liked the first game, though it had its share of rough edges. But the second game was...just boring and kind of tedious. It had the usual nice Alice design, but it started slow, felt small, was a bit clunky, and loved pointless combat.

I paid full price for the first game and beat it with fond memories. I bought the second game for $5-$10 and never finished it.
'Nuff said.
Wondering if there will be any surprises with the S4,

They have a point, though, as much as I don't like admitting it. Today, my PC is vastly more powerful than the hardware in the PS4. And yet, come launch time, all of my games will step up to PS4/Xbox 720 image quality and I suspect my PC will struggle to play games anything close to 60 FPS at 1080P.

Given that consoles are leading development, about the only good thing I can say is that any upgraded PC capable of gaming, post-console launch, should stay so for some time.
Console games will improve for a few years while PC requirements go up.
Only using my PC for gaming; finding it hard to suggest to average gamers,

News Comments > Tomb Raider Patched
27. Re: Tomb Raider Patched Mar 11, 2013, 20:31 Ray Marden

I liked the game overall - I would give it an 85%+. I got 100% of all the collectibles, all skills, and all upgrades and my play time is 17 hours.

Thankfully, the game ran perfect in crossfire, though the whole TressFx thing is silly. Having individual hairs moving about does not justify the performance hit and it drove me crazy that it did not actually rest on her shoulders, instead floating atop a magical shield she had atop her shoulders. It might be patched now, but it's too late.

It's a good purchase overall (note that I only paid $36 through GMG,) but it feels a bit inconsistent. It's a less polished Uncharted with few tombs to raid, somewhat generic combat, and some forced character development. I do like the idea of seeing Lara start from scratch, but they played her too weak while contrasting it against the wholesale murder of a hundred people.

Going into it, the beginning is actually the worst part of the game - I was freaking out that the levels were really small, the QTEs were pointless, everything was blocked off, and things (wolves) were spawning over and over in the same locations. Play the game for a few hours and you get more into the story, you gain a few more upgrades or abilities, the scale of the world increases quite a bit, and they give you more "open" areas to just freely explore, including teleportation to earlier levels to look for any items you may have missed.

I found the exploration aspects much more interesting and I really hope they focus on it more in future games. It's not a classic Tomb Raider game, but for a current generation game, it's pretty good. Buy it for $40 or less, play it a few hours, and I think both Uncharted fans and Tomb Raider fans will get some enjoyment from it.
They either really changed direction midway through or gained confidence.
Waiting for Bioshock Infinite ,
Ray

It's local to your area/connection, Creston. I'm downloading ME3 right now at 8.77MB/sec.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/16/originspeed.jpg/

Having said that, it is not uncommon for Origin to be inconsistent. I've seen more than a few times where it lowers to 40KB/s or so for one hour or so.
Is it even a direct download or is it P2P?
Edit: Just from the time of posting, I have seen speeds from 3MB/s to 7MB/s.

Having just upgraded interwebzorz today ,

So...his belief is that less informed people don't know any better and should be treated accordingly? Publishers can shove the same, generic, broadly-appealing, barely improved item and get enough people to buy it? That people wanting significantly more and wanting to push boundaries should just bow down to the marketing or payola reviews? That making money justifies most/any actions? That you can only make the choice of not spending your money on a game or industry instead of trying to audibly point out its shortcomings?

I don't embrace mediocrity. Even the best of games I can identify the weak points or offer up suggestions. And yet I buy them, I have fun with them, I compare their cost to personal entertainment ratio, and I look for improvements . For the blatantly inferior products, I will do my best to call them out on their weaknesses or promote better alternatives to less informed gamers.
Is he a gamer or just a caricature?

I am skeptically interested. I like the idea of this character going open world a la Skyrim, but I don't see them pulling them off, I don't see there being a large enough base for it.

I generally liked the second game, but it had some rough edges that make me hesitant to recommend it to the average gamer.
Can Cliffy B. sell out more? Really? Loving EA and microtransactions?

Uhh...yeah...I can skip this one. It looked uninteresting the first time they showed it, but I was hoping it was just some alpha roughness.

Good for them in making a new game, but who is this aimed at? Do Twilight fans want a stealth game? Do stealth gamers think the only thing holding them back is some tween exposure?
It just seems a bit generic in every regard.

News Comments > Crysis 3 Patch
12. Re: Crysis 3 Patch Feb 28, 2013, 19:30 Ray Marden

It takes an absurd level of hardware, but the game is damn beautiful with all settings maxed. It really does look just like the screenshots - it immediately made all other games look simple and cheap.

Overall, I would give it an 8/10. The game itself is probably just too easy and inconsistent. I see the potential for this to be an amazing game, but some of the quirks make me give it a lower rating.

I already saw a few comments about it being too easy so I went in on a higher difficulty, but I never felt challenged or threatened. The bow in particular is rather ridiculous - it becomes a one-hit-kill rocket launcher that doesn't even break stealth! The aliens weapons are absurdly fun and absurdly powerful. I really like the ability to customize your suit (upgrade all components of the suit, though you can only have a finite amount active,) but they gave out too many upgrade modules; I am on the last level and have all but one upgrade unlocked. Even then, it just makes you that more overwhelming, whether you play the stealth game or go in guns blazing.

I chose the former and, hunting for all the upgrade modules and intelligence pieces, my session is going to clock in around 10 hours. If you go straight shooter, you can easily cut that time in half.

Otherwise, the mixture of components felt slightly off. It was too easy to pick enemies off one by one, levels felt slightly more confined or at least sparsely populated in certain areas, enemies spawn at blatant script points (which you then just flag and mark through walls with your super goggles ,) I though it was weird to transition from the alien-heavy ending of the second game back to fighting humans and ending up fighting aliens again at the end, etc.

I do like the game, but I just wish it did a little more. It's good, but not great. I got the game for "free" with the purchase of my video cards, but it would probably be better priced around $40-$50. Also, realize that this is still a Crysis game, nanosuit and all - I love that, but others may hate it.
Crysis was a better overall experience.

I really enjoyed the nostalgia factor, but some parts of the game reminded me of why this style of game died off. I am definitely interested in a sequel, but only if they really flesh out the gameplay or present a new, rich experience.

More than anything, I wish the would take on some of the other styles of classic RPGs.
Give me a new Ultima Underworld game, damn it!

Eh...distinct lack of specifics, price, release date, and games.

Social stuff I don't really care about (hence my playing games at the moment,) yet another bad Sony UI, controller features that seem too basic and limited to be that useful, Kinect for PS4, stalking through your Playstation 4, etc.

Eh, more of the same, but prettier. I saw nothing exciting today, but at least they are simplifying their architecture, trying to copy Nintendo's tablet, and tossing in Microsoft's Kinect.
Crysis 3 looks damned good on Very High. The bow is cheap, though.

Once I got past the fact that Crysis was not Far Cry, at least not once after that damned alien ship and turning the world to snow in the first game, I was able to enjoy this series a bit more.

I really enjoyed the second game - I loved that it varies from pure action to stealth gameplay - and I really hope this one is even better.
Thanks, Amazon, for sending me the promo code late at night. QQ.
Wondering how long the game is; hoping the 5 hour reports are inaccurate,

49. Re: Star Trek: The Video Game Trailer Feb 17, 2013, 16:34 Ray Marden

The game looks like a crude movie tie-in game designed to be little more than a cash grab. I hope I am wrong, but I did not see any deep component to the game and it reminds me a lot of other tie-ins.

As for the new Star Trek, it is a good popcorn flick, but I think it is probably is a poor Star Trek film. It focuses on action and style, it feels like a generic science-fiction film wearing Star Trek clothing, it certainly does not respect the core ideas of Star Trek/Rodenberry, has a few absurd or illogical moments, etc. More than these items, they neither continued the Star Trek world nor refreshed it - they just tossed out yet another time traveling story, changed one point, and then basically agreed to retell the existing stories, but with minor tweaks.

It is a fun, stupid action film, but I really have no idea what it has to do with Star Trek or what it added to the overall story/series.
DS9 is the best in the series. Hands down.

He does nail all the main points, though. The game looks nice and they tried something slightly different with the hero, but...it takes way too long to get going, it clubs you over the head with explanations, it has drastic pacing issues, the combat mechanics don't work well together, you have a battle every ten seconds or so, and then it turns into a Pokemon game.

If you love JRPGS, this is your game. Otherwise, I feel the gameplay pales in comparison to the world - I might even wish that it was an action RPG of some sort.
It taunts you with its potential.
Liking it in small spurts,
