News Comments > DuckTales: Remastered for PC This Summer
8. Re: DuckTales: Remastered for PC This Summer Jun 4, 2013, 21:51 Ray Marden

Instant buy. I freaking loved/hated that game so much - it is a definite moment from my childhood. Never has one greedy duck and a cane wreaked so much havoc...
/Cane /Boing /Boing /Boing /Boing /Boing...
If it does well, I wonder if they would do things like Little Nemo or Chip 'N Dale?

Thinking somebody needs to update the Wizards and Warriors series ,

I hate to admit it, but the Xbox gamepad for Windows I purchased almost a year ago has made a number of platform/action/arcade-style games significantly easier to play...
Don't make my second mistake; get the wireless model.

I am a gamer first and foremost. I just find that the PC offers a vastly superior experience, when a number of its strengths are utilized.

After that, I am a FPS whore and I have an affinity for exploration, experiencing new worlds, and mental challenges. After all that, I can still enjoy the occasional games from other genres or that play to different levels of these items.

Yet again, I find the PC offering the generally superior experience. Likewise, though I heavily favor the PC - it accounts for ~85% of my total game purchases - I also have the home consoles for the few unique games they have or the occasional unique experience they offer (all games playable on a gamepad, motion sensors, etc.)

Can a game's design make it good/fun/unique/challenging/whatever? Or is the delivery format the primary concern?
Like playing Metro: Last Light, flaws and all, for the good parts.
Just saying',

News Comments > Metro: Last Light HUD "Fix" Inbound
68. Re: Metro: Last Light HUD May 19, 2013, 12:29 Ray Marden

The game is okay, but not quite what I was hoping for - it's like they put a dumb shooter in the world of Metro 2033. I am glad it is not as tedious as the first game was, but the world feels a bit small and cheap now.

Overall, I would give it a 7.5 out of 10, but it needs to do more with the world or gameplay and the various rough edges keep getting on my nerves - monsters respawning in front of me, the spider monsters not always reacting to my flashlight, NPCs pushing my character out of the way, minor animation issues with my character (immediate crouching, melee kill animation bugs,) scripts not triggering promptly, lots of standing around listening to exposition, overpowered (when it works) to utterly broken (why can I not knock out or stab this NPC???) stealth mechanics, loading new level data every 5 minutes or so, DLC for the full game, etc.

I just got to the point where you crash through the barrier with the rail car and meet up with the caravan and my game, after hours of no issues, is locking up immediately. The forums indicate this could be an issue with a gamepad, Logitech software, or AMD hardware, but it is just one more little thing...
Full disclosure: I'm running Crossfire with the beta drives, too.
I only paid $37.50 through GMG (a great online retailer which now offers payment through Paypal - no more whining!,) but I feel like I overpaid slightly or it could use another patch or two. I think my "ultimate" Metro game would actually be a blend of 2033 and Last Light.

Liking the idea more than the execution,
Ray

News Comments > Saturday Consolidation
13. Re: Saturday Consolidation May 18, 2013, 19:16 Ray Marden

Honestly, f*ck Nintendo and f*ck the Wii U.

I wanted a vastly more powerful system, I wanted a Wiimote with perfect 1:1 control, and I wanted to see some new properties.

Instead, I got a PS3 or XB360 comparable system with a small, ghetto tablet. Because I have a 60" television screen in my living room so I can fiddle around with a tablet, right? It has no amazing new properties to offer me and, even for continuously relying on its established brands, I have only promises of future releases. For all of Nintendo's many, repeated, ongoing stumbles, Nintendo did not even bother to have at least one killer game, much less multiple, available at launch or even to this day. And I have to, specifically, keep all the assorted dongles/controllers/crap from the Wii, too?

The single most unique thing of the system is the weak tablet, but given Nintendo's tenuous standing in the market, developers have no reason to solely develop for the Wii U or to make it the lead platform. The stupid tablet also greatly inflates the weak system's price and, speaking of fracturing the market, makes the tablet an unimportant item in group games (unless you seriously want to talk about the cost of buying three additional tablets...)

This is what we got after all this time? After already accepting some significant shortcomings on the Wii? With all its prior profit, this is what it spent the R&D budget on? I have owned every Nintendo home console released in the US, from the NES forward, but I have no reason to buy a Wii U. At this point, I don't see myself buying one until they release all of their same, tired brands on the system and drop the cost of the deluxe unit to $200.00 or less. And Nintendo better do something fast because the PS4 PC looks far, far more interesting and the Microsoft PC is just three days away from putting it to rest as well.
I prefer my portable Note 2 to the crappy Wii U.
Thinking Nintendo deserves to fail at this point,
Ray

If only they had a department that drafted and verified all the wording in agreements. If only they had the ability to look at old ones to read them and comprehend them...

Talk about a lazy legal department.

News Comments > Thief 4 Trailer
25. Re: Thief 4 Trailer Apr 2, 2013, 05:12 Ray Marden

Uhh...what? How did a master thief let somebody steal his voice???

It doesn't really scream out Thief to me, but it will really come down to the gameplay. I think they should retain his real voice and the heavy emphasis on assassination technology feels like one of their stupid attempts to "fix" the series.
Combined with the early developer video, I am skeptical...
Also, where are they going with lore? At least they show the eye, but is this going to be a straight forward game about stealing jewelry? Garrett may have tried to tell himself that is all he was doing, but he was always pulled away by his destiny and/or otherworldly responsibilities...

Otherwise, what is the world and overall setting going to actually look like, especially in motion, and how large or complex will the levels be?

Waiting and watching,
Ray

I stumbled into Wool a few months back and I became an instant fan of Hugh Howey. When I caught up with the current release, I hopped over to his Molly Flyde series and that was a blast as well.

I just purchased two additional books, standalone stories each, and I expect that I will end up buying every book he releases going forward.
A science fiction story not about space or digital personas.
Thinking he is a good writer that appreciates his fans and charges a low price,

Edit: On a different note, Bioshock Infinite ending = mind blown.

News Comments > Ships Ahoy - BioShock Infinite
38. Re: Ships Ahoy - BioShock Infinite Mar 26, 2013, 15:42 Ray Marden

Based only on the early levels, they appear to be split up into specific areas (buildings, airship, market area, etc.) and the enemies walk around their given area. If they spot you, they attack and there are a finite amount of enemies, but they can respawn.

I noticed this when backtracking to unlock the first safe - enemies in one specific area had respawned and it was either based upon time or due to my having gone X many areas ahead of that one. At least early on, turrets appear static; once they are destroyed, they will not respawn with the other NPCs.

I don't get the impression that they roam outside of their designated area, but there really is not much of a reason to do so given the vertical, separate design of the buildings/levels. Likewise, I have not yet seen a NPC follow me to a new area - they don't appear to open doors/levers. Also, remember that not everybody in BI is an enemy.

Input was really wonky on my Logitech gaming mouse, but I have set the in-game sensitivity to the lowest level, turned off acceleration, and then manually increased the DPI sensitivity levels of the mouse. Afterward, I get a smooth, highly-responsive input.
I hope gaming didn't just peak until the end of the year.
Thinking this is a great game and a proper sequel to Bioshock,
Ray

It is a common issue with the applet, but for the sake of humor, make sure that you are viewing pages at 100% of their normal size. Occasionally, I have seen people touch the scroll wheel by accident and decrease/increase the page zoom 5%-10% and have issues with buttons and forms not lining up correctly.
Also, pages can get stuck if you resize while 5,000 ads are being loaded.
Wishing somebody would kill off Flash already,

AMD has been quiet on the subject as of late. The prior 13.2.x betas were supposed to be introducing these faixes, but things are still hit or miss, especially in Crossfire, from game to game.

I can run Cyrsis 3 on ultra without a problem, but I cannot play Far Cry on any setting without getting some type of micro-stutter.
Stutter, stutter, stutter...jerk, slow, speed up, stutter...
Wondering why AMD seems to be so much worse than Nvidia with this,

Audio driver is hanging a few CF systems, though some are claiming it happens on single card setups as well. If you aren't actually using it and have this issue, do a custom install and disable that component.
Too bad I found out about this after four install attempts.
Still having microstuttering in FC3,

9. Re: Morning Mobilization Mar 15, 2013, 19:24 Ray Marden

The less a person sees or knows about the announcement "show," the happier they will be with the phone.

As for size, I guess it comes down to usage. Sadly, I am one of those people that sends far, far more texts than I spend minutes talking on the phone. In addition to GPS, the other main thing I use my phone for is browsing the web when I am waiting on the wife, at a store, at the in laws, etc. In those cases, the larger, higher-resolutions screens are fantastic.

Being 6' tall, I would say something with a 5.5" screen (a la Note II) is as big as I want to go. For anybody smaller, particularly most women, I would argue it can be unwieldly and they would really need to be sold on some other aspect of a given phone.

For me, the S4 seems like it may be the way to go. The 5" screen shaves off half an inch from the N2, but it fits in a lot more via the increase in resolution. Otherwise, nothing really stood out as being amazing or being more than a rarely used gimmick, but it hits all my requirements - a larger, 1080p screen, fast processor, NFC, wireless charging (with additional purchase,) removable battery, a high resolution camera, a bigger battery, and a micro SD slot.

The S3 is a good phone, but aging; the DNA (I'm on Verizon, obviously) was held back on he storage front; and the HTC One (which would make me change networks) has a weaker camera.

Wondering what all of you would say about the N3... ,
Ray

I am all about higher resolution and/or better compression than what we currently have. Watching stuff on the monitor is okay, but there is definitely room for improvement. Otherwise, Blu-Rays consistently whallop the "HDTV" signal that the cable company puts out; some of the premium channels are not too bad, but everything else varies from show to show, channel to channel.

More than anything, I want something, anything, to drag the monitor manufacturers, screaming and kicking, to push out cheaper, higher than 1080p monitors!
My 27" monitor is lower resolution than my 24" monitor. Wah wah.
Tired of seeing pixels getting streeeeeeeeeeeeetched,

23. Re: Alice 3 Possibilities Raised Mar 15, 2013, 04:44 Ray Marden

If both games came out in 2011, I would agree that A:MR is the "better" game. However, that pesky decade gets in the way of things. In 2000, AMA did far more for me than A:MR did in 2011.
The time of release obviously factors into things...
If people think it is a great game, more power to them. However, it left me wanting - for the time, it felt a bit clunky, the art design did not amaze me, there were many other games I would recommend over it, I wanted far more freedom and range, etc.

Looking for more,
Ray

I love me some Thief, but..........when your first two items of change are "less gothic" and "more action," it is not a good feeling.

Can nobody make a good sequel to Thief 2?

I will keep an eye on this, but I am not feeling too hopeful. Looking at some of the screenshots from GI, it reminds me of Dishonored and the talk of standing in groups conjures images of AC. Even if they played Thief, did they understand it?
Well, they did say they were going to "fix" the series.
Rest in peace, Looking Glass Studios. Rest in peace.

Going to wait and see,

Sad to say, but I would rather they skipped it. Or had somebody else do it.

I liked the first game, though it had its share of rough edges. But the second game was...just boring and kind of tedious. It had the usual nice Alice design, but it started slow, felt small, was a bit clunky, and loved pointless combat.

I paid full price for the first game and beat it with fond memories. I bought the second game for $5-$10 and never finished it.
'Nuff said.
Wondering if there will be any surprises with the S4,

They have a point, though, as much as I don't like admitting it. Today, my PC is vastly more powerful than the hardware in the PS4. And yet, come launch time, all of my games will step up to PS4/Xbox 720 image quality and I suspect my PC will struggle to play games anything close to 60 FPS at 1080P.

Given that consoles are leading development, about the only good thing I can say is that any upgraded PC capable of gaming, post-console launch, should stay so for some time.
Console games will improve for a few years while PC requirements go up.
Only using my PC for gaming; finding it hard to suggest to average gamers,
