@ Agent X7

You obviously don't play Hard Core mode. No one, NO ONE survives more than 3 bullets from ANY weapon which is why, on my list, I stated Hard Core kills should be the norm regardless if you choose Standard or Hard Core. Forever I thought it was my network connection until my buddy turned me onto HC servers. Now I regularly get a good kill/death ratio.

Why would they ever nerf the killing potential in a game is beyond me. Why is it a "joy" to unload 30 rounds into someone and MAYBE get a kill?

This plagued BF2 as well and needs to be corrected permanently. It would make people play more conservatively and also from medium long range and make for a more enjoyable game overall.

Are you kidding me???
All that high weapon damage does is take away from the most interesting and fun aspect of games of that type which is the back and forth firefights. Without the ability to evade every game just turns into a camp-fest Whac-A-Mol where the luck of "I saw you first so I win" is the only deciding factor.
If anything they should REDUCE weapon damage to something closer to the level of Bad Company 1.

it took them almost two years to get out 1.4. that patch was in beta test for the longest time. and they still did not fix the bugs. and those additional content were remakes of old maps. thats bad.

1.4 was in beta for a few months certainly not two years (the game is not even 2 years old yet)

Yes..complex multiplayer games have bugs. Show me one that does not.

Getting remakes of two beloved classic BF maps...again..I don't see why that is a bad thing.

The game would be fantastic if it were slowed a bit

Are you fucking serious?! I find the movement speed in the game to be way too slow as it is. Because this game had "Quake" in the name, I had hoped and expected that it would be Quake 3 with vehicles or a Quake-themed version of UT2004. But, it's not. That said, the game has grown on me, but if it were any slower I wouldn't play it.

Yes...that was exactly the attitude of a large (or at least very vocal) part of the community during the beta and thats why the game turned into the flop it is now.

I love it, gamers have been screaming at dice about flaws in their product (BF series, etc) and only 2 years after the release of their LATEST, BF2142 they're putting in the widescreen support that was wanted at product release, and yet they claim to know where the future of gaming is going.
Free tip, listen to the consumers, then you'll know what we want and where the future SHOULD go....asses...

They still provide support and updates (including additional content) to an almost two year old game. And that is bad why exactly?

On the widescreen support in BF2/2142:
There is a little utility out there that adds true widescreen support to both of these games. I suggest you google it.

Other than that..BF2142 is a fantastic game and it is amazing that it still gets support/patches so relatively late into its life-cycle. There are still tons of people playing it and tons of servers with different map-cycles. I certainly don't play the same three maps over and over again.

On another note, it's really sad how almost every publisher/developer expects every game to be a huge, blockbuster hit that appeals to everyone everywhere. Can you imagine what would happen if the film or television industry followed this philosophy? There is a market for niche games, just as there is a market for niche everything. Greedy fucks.

Actually things are in my opinion pretty similar to the film industry in some ways. There is a flourishing market of small indie titles on consoles and PC (flash games, XBL Arcade, etc) and there are a lot of interesting "smaller" or just "different" games (coming out of europe in a lot of cases) like the "Witcher", "Stalker", "Sins of a Solar Empire", etc.
But there are also the Triple-A big budget blockbuster titles and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is clearly one of them. Obviously with those titles the publisher needs to aim for a mass audience.

(I hate the dumb negativity of some of the blues crowd).

Negativity is only dumb when it is unfounded. If the negative posters here actually played the game, their opinion is qualified.

I should have said "exaggerated negativity". Calling it "the worst game ever" is simply ludicrous.

Demo was average but certainly not horrible (I hate the dumb negativity of some of the blues crowd). The scenario could be pretty cool.
Definitely worth a rent or even a buy for the less cash constraint among us.

Yes, being able to kill infantry without any recourse by them from miles away is why Battlefield is so great.

"intense" heh. Quake 3 is intense. BATTLEFIELD IS BORINGFIELD AMIRITE.

Go play ANY of the BF2 maps on a full 64 player server (or smaller versions of those maps with lower player numbers) and you will have an intensity of gameplay that goes FAR beyond what quake 3 can deliver.

Also tanks in BF2 are sitting ducks on the battlefield and can easily be blow to shreds by infantry with rocket launcher and of course OTHER TANKS not to mention jets/helicopters.

Nah Jerykk, I agree. No game will ever be able to dethrone how boring BF42/BF2 are. Sitting in a tank spamming infantry from 5 miles away is the definition of skill!

Exactly..you made his point. Having LARGE maps with combined arms where you can sit in a tank and have long range engagements and at the same time offering intense infantry battles on the very same map or on street maps with hardly any or no vehicles is part of the reason why the BF formula works so well.

Battlefield's vehicles are actually fun. Well, BF2's were fun. 2142's vehicles kinda sucked, besides the Walker.

What are you talking about? Jets and helis might have been fun to fly but without any challenge on the ground and completely unbalanced. BF2142 fliers are fun to fly but not overly dominating. BF2142 jeeps are so much more fun than their BF2 counterparts because of the "boost" ability and the "shields" give the heavy vehicles a new tactical element (and the hovertank is great fun in itself). Walker is great too of course.

This is an obvious ripoff of TF2. PATHETIC!

I don't care if its free, I won't be playing this. It's a completely dumbed-down version for children. PATHETIC!

The fact that it will have VEHICLES already propels it light years ahead of TF2

BF2's combat was fine except for infantry which was fixed in 2142 but at the expense of pretty much removing air vehicles.

Was hoping for a BF3 to combine the best of both, until EA's announcement yesterday.

I really enjoy flying in BF2142. Sure...the flyers are not the undefeatable killing machines that jets and helis are in BF2 but whats wrong with a bit of a challenge...

A german games magazine page has some more details:
...
* 3rdPerson only

I was excited after hearing the news yesterday but 3rd person in a Battlefield game means I'm going to pass on this one.

I'm not one to complain about something free, but I wonder how useful a game can be that puts you at a disadvantage unless you pay for upgrades. It sort of defeats the purpose of being free, no? I can't see anyone enjoying getting consistently ganked by people with better equipment, so they will either quit or pony up cash to remain competitive.

Maybe you have not heard of it but its called "challenge". Just like you are at a disadvantage aganst the 5 headed end-level boss throwing fireballs at you in a single player game you might be at a slight disadvantage against the guy who payed the price of a beer for a better weapon...it does not take away from the fun at all.

How does it do that? They could easily take a page from War Rock and other Korean MMOs and simply force you to RENT the best weapons and stuff.

Given EA's track record with support, I wouldn't frankly trust them very far with my $10 a month or whatever. Of all the publisher/developer combinations to be doing this sort of thing, EA/Dice are the _last_ one I'd give monthly money to.

Obviously they can't force you to do ANYTHING.
If you don't pay up-front and always have the option to leave and play another game than the only way to retain players (especially given the numerous other choices in the fps arena) is by providing new and compelling content.

Gamers will be able to buy items which customise their appearance in the world, but will not be able to seek an advantage through buying weapons.

This was already overwritten by the statement in the NY Times article...

Players can pay not only for decorative items like shoes and jerseys but also for boosts in their players’ speed, agility and accuracy. Mr. Florin said that while most users do not buy anything, a sizable minority ends up spending $15 to $20 a month.

So to stay in the competition you have to pay...

Which is really completely fine with me. An ongoing revenue stream also ensures on-going high level support and new content.

I hope the "real" BF3 will at least incorporate part of that business model as well.

man i hate to disagree with 12 posters in a row...it's clearly a move toward TF2 style art, which is cool. art isn't innovative, it's pretty conformist. look at the cars on the road. all the models of a given year, across all the makers, are pretty identical. so TF2 is leading the way to a less superrealistic art style. so what? after years of increasing realism, i'm kind of enjoying this cartoony stuff.
as for the suckage: the FTP model will definitely be biting us in the ass, no questions there. There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.

this looks like a fun game. if BF 1942 and BF2 are any measure (carefully ignoring shitfests like BFV and BF2142) this game may well rock. i'll definitely be playing it.

You are right on everything but the fact that BF2142 sucks. Its actually BY FAR the best battlefield game.
