iD Tech 5 (or whatever the engine is) seems to be only good with linear experiences where the player's view can be controlled. Then they can pack as much detail as possible into only the areas that can be seen.
It's a limitation, but it worked for RAGE.
Also, I don't mind the linearity of RAGE considering sometimes I want to sit down and play a game without having to search for an item for an hour or hike my way to the next objective.

And gunplay didn't seem to work for me as it did for you. Typical mutants die from a headshot and baddies with helmets do take a few hits to pop the helmet off then another to splatter their brains.
I'm playing on Hard.

RAGE is by no means a masterpiece, but I find it to be fun and visually impressive.

One thing that stands out for me though is the lack of dynamic lighting since almost all of the environment lighting is baked in. Interesting technique, but flawed.

Yea... I dunno what version you're playing, but RAGE looks awesome on my machine.
Sure, some secondary textures look a bit low res, but last night as I was entering Subway Town for the 20th time during my single (and belated, I might add) playthrough, I couldn't help but think how incredible it looked.
I find myself stopping to take in the scenery a lot in RAGE

Gotta say, I like the focus on close quarters.
It allows for focus on strategy, details, destructibility and teamwork since there's a clear objective and linear (but multiple) paths.

If it followed the CS formula in that it's got a few gamemodes with a bunch of well-designed, disconnected maps, then I'm all for it.

Their DLC is outsourced? Didn't know that.

Dragon Teeth maps look far less impressive visually, from what I've seen but I haven't played them.

Shanghai, for me, is the best Battlefield map in years

Since the DOTA tourney is currently on, I decided to reinstall the game to watch some matches and possibly play some.

After one match I realized why I quit playing in the first place. The game is a fucking bore, man.
Same map, same setup, same battles every time. It's beyond stale.

Uninstalled right afterwards.

I supported the Divinity kickstarter and now want to play the game. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to get it over Steam without having to pay for it again.
