Which game was it that there was an embargo on reviews for like a week after it came out, to deflect negative press? I want to say the first APB go-around.

Of course there is a hoxfix already. But since it's for Brink, I'll let it slide, parkour style, of course.

I'm tired of watching Xbox 360 players and their crappy gamepad controls: I want to play. Where is my time machine? 12 AM please!

Is this a console port for the pc?

Given Splash Damage's history of developing, I think it's a PC game ported to the consoles for a change.

The one thing that looks like a bad design decision is the lack of control over the paths that you can take when doing escort missions

I've seen video of secondary objectives that will open up other paths for escorted items, although I do not think you can tell them to use them.

you had to hold down the middle mouse button to bring up the menu then just move the mouse around to select the suit power

That's what I envision. I am more concerned about the four directional buttons used for special abilities (heal, turret, molotov). I'm sure they will simply just assign them to Q and E and F and the like.

Here are my questions/concerns:

1. How much of a gimmick is SMART, and how much is it useful? I could see it radically impacting the game in a positive manner, with people coming in from previously inaccessible angles, or just being "oh you press a button instead of using a crate to jump up there". Sliding looks neat, though.

2. Unlocks. How much stuff will people have when they start? How quickly will things unlock? WIll weapons unlock for all classes simultaneously? Will all classes get to use all weapons?

3. I'm interested in what the "challenges" are. Timed single-player tutorials or what?

4. Map size. I suspect it's going to be a linear progression like the ETQW maps were (one objective after another).

5. Integrating single and multiplayer seems cool: pulling down people to replace bots in your game if desired (Shogun 2 did this, kinda).

6. The effect of body types. Just speed/climbing ability/damage?

7. The dynamic objective wheel might be cool.

8. PC controls. Specifically, how the objective wheel is going to work on a keyboard.

9. I think letting people use revive syringes whenever instead of paddling someone and having them become immediately shot (ahem, Battlefield) is neat.

10. Bots

I saw an Out of Eight quote on a retail box, Starpoint Gemini I think. Must be nice to have that sort of recognition.

It helps when you are the only place reviewing a particular game

I also don't understand the fuss about Brink. Maybe I am wrong but to me it just looks like Wolfenstein Enemy Territory / Enemy Territory Quake Wars only just in very slow.

That's what I thought at first, too, but the more I look at the video series they are putting it, the more I like what they are adding to that formula.

3/8 is around 4/10? Seems a bit low considering what you've said about the graphics.

I don't weigh graphics highly in my overall scores, despite dedicating a section to them in my reviews.

I preferred action a lot more; some of the things you had to do (like using the darts) in the stealth mode were annoying and hard to get working correctly. Switching between characters was kind of dumb, too, and required because the friendly AI wasn't the best at staying alive or engaging the enemy.

I had played Breach not too long before SH and you can take cover behind anything, so that make the various limitations of SH stick out a bit more.

Sorry I wasn't referring to your review. Mainly the GameSpot and GamesRadar reviews. Your review is definitely detailed. Although I don't agree with what you wrote about the cover system. It did take some time to get use to but overall I think it's done really well and adds to the play "fun" factor of the game. You're the only person that has said the graphics were good - which came as a surprise. They aren't bad that's for sure.

OK, I just didn't give the game a good score, so I assumed I wasn't being accusatory or anything; I just thought I might have missed something (goodness knows I'm not perfect).
My main problem with the cover system is that there were objects that I felt should be used for cover that couldn't be (some concrete barricades, wooden pallets, etc), which kind of destroyed my faith in the system.
I thought the game had a great level of detail; it was just too dark.

It certainly feels over exposed, but at the same time, with the money it makes every fall, is it any wonder Activision keeps pushing them out?

I know I would.

Speaking of FPS, I'm looking forward to Brink. I've largely avoided it up until the last week, but after watching a few videos yesterday, it looks like a blast.

I had a response ready, but then I realized I just paraphrased my review. I can see the game's appeal if you can get past the issues I can't (heavy arbitrary scripting, poor camera angle, some objects can't be used for cover, checkpoint-only saves, dark shadows).

pcrequired wrote on Apr 30, 2011, 12:58:
You'll notice the poor scored reviews go into no detail of the games features or gameplay

Which things did I not address?

It's a neat idea, but the path choices aren't as many as I would like, and the alien turrets are always in the same spot for a particular level.
