News Comments > F1 2014 & 2015 Announced

By the sound of this announcement it will be a DLC update for (hopefully) a fraction of the cost.
I doubt that. I bet F1 2014 and F1 2015 will both be separate, full-priced games on the PC.

The article is really focusing on console games, which has an added threat of the console being controlled by one particular company. A lot of people will lose a lot of games if Steam were to cease to exist, but there are other outlets (directly from the developer, GOG, GamersGate, etc) to purchase and download games from, so the future is not so bleak on the PC. Microsoft or Sony could simply say next year that games purchased in 2014 no longer work on the device, and you must purchase a yearly subscription on every game you "own", and there wouldn't be much people could do, other than leap to the PC, of course.

All of the cars and tracks are unlocked from minute one. The only thing XP does is allow for very minor upgrades to existing vehicles. I have no problem with this.

Can you force the game to give you longer races right off the bat, or is it stuck with the "you're in the beginning of career mode, so you do 3 lap races?"
I haven't gotten far enough in the career mode to see if it gets longer there, but you can do custom cups and change the length: the upper limit is a 20 lap race or a 40-minute endurance race (no pit stops, though).
Everything (all tracks and cars) are unlocked from the instant you start the game, so if you don't want to play the career mode at all you can avoid it altogether.

So you've been out in front by a good bit after running a great race?
Yes. And I've been mid-pack after running a bad race and back of the pack after running a terrible race.
Of course, the length of the races in the career mode start out short (3-5 laps) so you're never really that far ahead. I've been about 1 second a lap better than the best AI in a race or two and finished about 5 seconds ahead at the end.

Does it have rubber banding, though? That's an absolute deal breaker for me.
Creston
Check out the PCGamer review. I've found it surprisingly informative.
Regarding rubber banding here is what they've had to say:

Perhaps the best thing Grid Autosport does is place you more often than not in the middle of the pack. There probably is some rubber-banding at work (a term our friend in games marketing no doubt hates, and would rather see replaced by PackSense or some such), but itís much subtler than any of Autosportís contemporaries. Youíre used to having slightly better acceleration than the AI in racing games (spoilers: thatís why you always win) but here, you donít. You have better brakes. That means in order to take a place, you need to line up an opponent, anticipate his braking point, then either brake slightly later or pick a wider line and brake earlier, hoping to carry more speed out of the apex. In either event, they usually repass you. Suddenly, 5th place becomes a towering achievement. Trying to fulfil a sponsor objective that demands you drive a clean race and still bag the podium necessary to win the championship becomes the single hardest and most rewarding thing youíve recently done in a racing game. Itís excellent.
That's excellent analysis (that I should probably steal for my review ). In my races, the good AI stays out front and the bad AI stays in the back. I've never been the victim on "oh, the human is way in front, let's speed up. The AI in GRID Autosport is excellent.

I'm reviewing it now (on a gamepad, fyi) and I like it much, much, much better than GRID 2. Aggressive AI, better handling, lots of cars and tracks. Practice and qualifying sessions. Cockpit view, although it's extremely low-resolution.

I can't believe they are charging $60 for it.

Actually, I can believe they are. I wish people wouldn't buy it.

I was really pumped about this game, but the fact that the battles are not randomly generated just killed the whole thing for me. If I'm mistaken on that detail, please correct me.
The maps are semi-random: each level is broken up into large sections and there are several particular layouts (6 or so per map type?) that are placed when the tactical battle starts. The tiles are recycled often enough to be noticeable after your first couple of matches.

I've played once. The rest of the time people quit and the game keeps migrating the server around.
