I generally stay off of LIVE because, sure, I can turn off specific folks I dont want to hear, but it is endlessly filled with teens and kids being teens and kids. The name-calling get old real fast. Too often I feel like I am babysitting while the real parents are at the movies. I would like a place on LIVE where one can 100% optionally join an age-restricted group -- no one under 20. There will still be plenty of idiots but getting rid of the kids would make a huge and immediate difference.

Gamespot really took a blow to the head with that Gertmann debacle. Sounds like they had it coming to them though.

the only sure way to hamper console piracy is to change the hardware of the console. Since console piracy for the 360 is is ramping up (look at the piracy of GTA4) it greatly behooves MS to come out with a new console in 2010.

The game will be actively marketed with the boxes and ads screaming "by the folks who made Oblivion" and it will sell tons on the consoles. I dont think they'll need a demo at all.

Id would impress if they came up with enemy AI that was better than what every FPS has at the moment. That would be genuinely innovative. But we might see another Doom3 with deeply repititive dark hallways and cheesy "surprise out of nowhere" AI.
You know on 2nd thought, I wouldnt mind a "serious sam" style game if the level-design actually rewarded exploration (with really large very different looking and designed levels) and the graphics ran at a fast frame rate. There was strategy to Serious Sam at harder level of difficulty because the different enemies used genuinely different attacks -- a solid FPS game I thought.

In other words, MS will release a brand new console for holiday season 2010, which would give the 360 a five year lifespan. Nintendo will have their new Wii out for that shopping season too unless Nintendo is willing to sell their console without a sufficient storage mechanism.

Fable 1 was indeed utterly disappointing as major-release games go. I'm not going anywhere near Fable 2 until lots of lots of reviews are out there. It will sell tons though.

it is shocking to me that even the folks who made the original xcom cannot seem to get a modern sequel right. They've tried again and again (even on the gameboy) and it totally misses the mark every time. It might have something to do with a lack of funding to develop the game properly, but I dont think that is the whole story.

There's another compelling reason why SONY and MS change the internal motherboards every now and then. And this is never documented in a press release: altering the motherboard and chipsets very nicely hinders console piracy for about a year until the hackers catch up. Everytime SONY changed the board of the PS2 (there are over a dozen revisions), there had to be yet another hardware hack devised. When the last PS2 revision came out, software piracy of the PS2 skyrocketed, because every type of PS2 was now 100% crack-able.
Software piracy on the 360 is ramping up, so this is a good time for MS to release a new chipset.
The growing issue of console software piracy is largely kept under wraps in the media, but it is only a matter of time before the word spreads and game companies go to the press and get "mad" about it.

inblack that's interesting; i hadnt considered that. If there was no xbox 1, there would have been the ps2 and gamecube. The gamecube was a failure. Sony would have replaced the ps2 but that new sony console would still be a "niche" gadget in the USA. You make a good argument that the xbox 1 hugely helped to popularize console gaming in the USA (and perhaps UK), for better or for worse.

At least for now, the PG gaming is experiencing a major low point for sales versus consoles and game complanies dont seem to care about how annoying copy protection is. My hope is that console gamers (whose wants clearly dominate the gaming marketplace) who loved oblivion and other sorts of dumbed down games, will want more complex games down the road. yea its only a hope but not a totally unreasonable one.

cool article. these chipset revisions dont make the 360 faster; as the article says, it makes them cheaper to manufacture and cooler to run. It bears mentioning that the XBOX 1 went thru at least 5 chipset/motherboard revisions that I know about in its relatively short lifespan. i love the 360 for its convenience but if anyone here thinks MS will still be making the "360" 2 years from now, i would bet them a buck on that. There will be a new console with additional "home/internet media" functionality and additional storage and more system and video ram. MS wants to be the market leader in the space around your TV and the 360 cannot do that no matter how many revised chipsets.

$279 bucks at Amazon for a 360 console isnt that much given the current value of the dollar. Then another $40 for the 2nd wireless controller. honestly at that price the 360 is a disposable item. One game costs 60 bucks -- that's where the annoying hper-price gouging occurs. XBOX live is cheap at 50 bucks a year for unlimited multiplayer. Basically its a "cheap to buy" console and not a big deal if it breaks.

nah, MS is in the "home media system" for the longer haul. Whatever the next 360 will be it will have TIVO type functionality built-in and a proper storage mechanism. MS has also said that the 360 will have a market life shorter than the xbox 1, which makes it pretty clear what MS has in mind.

I get the impression that the suits working at game publishers cannot be gamers or techies, because they are clueless when they pay for the next version of SecureROM to be included in their new game. Then its hacked in 2 weeks or less and folks can simply google for torrents.
How much revenue is the company really preserving by paying for SecreROM?

Actually Crytek has been very clear that they cannot fit crysis in a console without massive changes. If you recall Crytek sold the rights to Far Cry a few years and then EA made a horrible bastardized version of the game for XBOX. It looked pretty but the enemy AI was unusually hilariously bad. It wouldnt move at all until you triggered it by moving to a certain physical point on the map and then a whole group of enemies would react the exact same way (i.e. run toward you). We can expect something similar to happen with Crysis on the current consoles. Crytek isnt dumb -- they will sell the rights to 'Crysis' for a few million and then create their own new game.

the success of downloadable arcade games on xbox LIVE (in terms of generating profitable revenue for small games that are easy to develop and sell) are making turn-based games a possibility again. I wouldnt rule out a TurnBased version of XCOM. Levine is involved and his games have been hit or miss but I prefer to remain optimistic when it comes to XCom.
