Spore is really basic in gameplay for anyone who has played some other games in his/her lifetime and knows how to use a mouse. Calling it 'complex' is sorta funny.

It sounds like he hated Fable so much he had to post a lengthy review of it. he reviews the deluxe PC version which had extra areas to it, etc but even that came out over a year ago.

the rhetoric in the article is not thaaaaat poor and its clear he is referring to the utterly pointless "roundtable" discussions about software piracy that occur within the game industry. Sounds like he had his fill of those and had to say something.

To my surprise too, it is indeed like an MMO in both 1. interface (once you get out of the water and onto land) and 2. in the way quests are given. The UI is a bunch of buttons with count-down timers (just like combat in WOW and Guild Wars etc) and you are hitting on these buttons to either attack or gain friends. For quests, you are traveling around a 3D landscape looking for "3 of this" or "do X activity to 5 of Y-type organisms." The landscapes are randomly generated and they look a bit generic which is unfortunate. You can tell the game was made for console graphics cards -- the landscape bitmaps and polygons are bland even on the highest settings. The creatures look great though. "fancy" graphical effects are surprisingly few, for example there don't appear to be any HDR or bloom effects at all.

Spore was designed with a very hefty on-line component and with lots of room for add-ons, so if the game is any good, it could have a long shelf-life. In some gameplay respects, and for better or worse, Spore plays like an MMO, with some RTS elements in the later city stages.

Gameplay was more of that first level over and over (its fundamentally a shooter) until the really bad boss fight at the end. I loved SS2 and played it 3 times.
It made scads of money so what do I know?

one concern looking at the achievement list is that the main story isnt that long (like we found with Mass Effect that could be completed in 6 hours). There appear to be about 5 chapters. Time will tell

it might be worth waiting a bit longer when the new motion-sensitive controllers come out for XMAS. Even the cheapest arcade XBOX will come with one new controller.

EG's review is quite critical of the hard default difficulty level and then lobs a 7 score at it. I remember Gothic 2 getting similar sorts of review scores from "major" review websites when it came out. I'll wait for more reviews.

agreed == I would have expected at least some reference to the reliance of some FPS games on scripted events and triggers that seems initially like AI to the player, but then one realizes its overly canned (i.e. FEAR).

EA might want to re-think over-priced games if they really want to hinder the market for used games at places like Gamestop.
EA could offer retail games from their own webportal for 10 bucks off of the retail price. That would encourage folks to buy the game new rather than wait for used copy to appear at Gamestop's shelves. It would have to be at least 10 bucks off retail to attract consumers.
Honestly, most console games are deeply over-priced at 60 USA dollars. Many consumers like myself wait for a game to go down to 25 bucks on Amazon (free shipping and no tax) or buy it used.

these videos changed my mind about Fallout 3. There's some inkling of depth to the skills and perks and there appear to be a varied assortment of weapons. I liked the minigame for cracking passwords since it requires at least some thought. The only issue left unaddressed -- even after looking at the videos -- is the quality of the enemy AI. Mass Effect's AI was mostly brain-dead regardless of difficulty level and that can kill a game like this, especially if it takes 30 hours to complete. So, some cautious optimism is merited.
Btw, the 5th video shows pickpocketing skills

I dislike autorun but disabling it across the board can have some annoying side effects that a techie will understand but a typical user will not.

Blizzard quite rightly has long-term revenue plans for this game and that (unfortunately for gamers) means dribbled out content. And likely new bits of content that is not free. It looks great, but I'll be waiting a while before I play it. Let the price go down.
