Looks neat but it seems really strange to me why they aren't using smooth voxels instead of the typical Minecraft bricks. For example of smooth voxels, take a look at Planet Explorers. Brick voxels are fine for buildings but in this gameplay video they are SUPER jarring when looking at them on terrain (0:33 seconds into the video), especially when the rest of the game looks like they're going for a realistic look instead of something retro.

I still don't understand why they insist on pushing out maps for their competitive multiplayer instead of single player DLC which is where the game really shines. Or perhaps go the extra mile and release some coop content.

What still upsets me about all of this is that not ONCE did they ever admit to releasing a bad game nor did they try to make up for it by providing the horde mode which was stripped from the game before release to player for free to make up for it. Or level tools... or anything else that would have made up for this.

It's supposed to have a beautifully crafted and immersive world.. I know that doesn't make a game but, I hear people saying it's worth a single run-through. I'll try it.

From what I played...

It's pretty but it's not as pretty or as high quality as Guild Wars 2 if you're wanting to compare graphics OR art style. Animations are NO where near as good as GW2. Armor design is OK, metal armors can look pretty good. It was pretty cool as a wizard to have a David Bowie "Labyrinth" orb but that's literally the ONLY weapon you'll see and each one looks exactly alike... a floaty see-through ball.

I wouldn't call it immersive at all, though. Everything is instanced and the instance design is very corridor-ish. Even the "open-world" areas feel claustrophobic because of this and it's extremely clear where the zone boundries are.

By all means though, try it. It looks nice enough.. my biggest gripe with it was how trivial and devoid of requiring thought the content is. Remember those immersion breaking glitter paths in Fable 2/3? Yeah... this game is full of them.

I'm so jaded and fatigued with new MMOs these days. I haven't enjoyed an MMO since WoW. What's the consensus on this one?

I got bored with it in beta and was mostly unimpressed. The combat tries to be like GW2 but fails as being anywhere as fluid, or fun. Except for perhaps the ragdolls and knockbacks with some attacks... Seriously GW2...how come I can boot players off walls in WvW but not mobs in PVE? Grr..

Most importantly though, it doesn't feel like a D&D game at all. I know it's based on 4th Ed. and I'm told that's the "WoW" edition but they could have at least made the game more challenging. It's a breeze while solo and in a group it makes all of the content trivial. There's absolutely no scaling for groups... which you know, doing stuff in groups is kind of the point of D&D.

Story wise? It's boring, incredibly boring. The characters are forgettable as is the plot, it's simply an excuse to shuffle you from one instance to another.

The classes themselves are dulled down. Want a wizard that throws fireballs? Tough... you're stuck with a "control wizard" that has ice spells.

The cash shop also rears it's ugly head. Nearly every item you get has to be identified, how do you get identify scrolls? You might get lucky enough to get them as a drop but don't count on it, you must spend cash shop currency on the vast majority of them JUST to see if an item is an upgrade... This also means that in a group you are rolling on items without even knowing if it's an upgrade. So I'm sure that will be a blast when you have more than one of a class in a group.

I could go on but really the only saving grace to this game is the Foundry. Quite literally some of the Foundry missions are by far better than mostly all of the standard content.

If you were looking for a true D&D MMO, you'll likely be disappointed.

EDIT:... and I know you can "pray" to get a paltry amount of cash shop currency every hour, but you're capped at 20k per day and that's assuming you poopsock your prayers every hour on the hour and even then it's a paltry amount for what you have to pay for things.

This game REALLY should have just been a buy2play title with cosmetics/meager boosts ONLY on the cash shop instead of the mess they ended up with.

Kickstart an MMO so that I can then pay monthly fees? Sure, let me get my wallet...

This is exactly what I challenged Mark Jacobs with multiple times, and despite his huge amount of open talk with players, he has not said one word about it.

Subscriptions are there because they supposedly justify the monthly new content and suchs mmorpgs get (supposedly). An mmorpg, without PvE, focused 99% around PvP, cant really have content updates. So basically your subs go to giving the devs steak dinners every night.

Again, I challenge Jacobs to prove otherwise.

From Mark Jacobs:

Because I don’t want to have to support 95% of the server population free of charge, pray that 5% spend a lot of money and then find ways to get a small % of the 95% to spend something; b) Maybe, but I think it is the good kind of insane; c) Check back with me in about 3-5 years. There’s a major storm coming in the FTP space whether people/publishers want to hear it or not (well, it’s not of course). Besides, we will get a tighter community with fewer people who actually really want to play and stick with our game as opposed to a large number of people who are playing until they have to pay or they find a different FTP that interests them. I’ll take lower profits, fewer players, tighter community any day of the week. FYI, I said this same thing before, back when networks like GEnie, AOL, etc. were charging for games and the first “Adver-model games” were supposed to take over the world.

More here:

So... he's completely out of touch with what's been happening in the MMO industry for the past 3-5 years, not to mention the Buy2Play new hotness that has occured in the past year.

I guess I'm not really surprised seeing as how they'll be repeating all the mistakes they made with DAOC as well as making it a PVP only griefer's paradise.

I do find it hilarious though that he's on this "subscription games are still relevant" soapbox while nickle and diming things in his Kickstarter in true F2P fashion, such as Priority Logins, Additional Storage, and even customer support queue priority as well as a special currency to buy them.

He's double dipping, just as The Secret World did charging a subscription and having people buy stuff on their cash shop. Worked out great for them, too, only I don't recall them having anything but clothing on their cash shop... hmm...

The biggest thing I want to know is if this is still a corridor shooter as they had shown off last fall. Going from FPS to TPS doesn't matter at all if the levels are still as painfully linear.

They really did. I saw that War of Magic had potential, but it was broken in so many areas. FE not only fix that, but improved it even further with stuff like the itemization and legendary items.

I've been given this expansion because I was a WoM early adopter, haven't had the time to try it yet but the two mane thing it fixes is Diplomacy and a better system for champs, which is great cause it was SO hard to find decent champs in the base game.

I'm looking forward to resurrecting my LP series once the update is final retail version.

Skirmish mode is a hoot, especially with a crew of friends, drunken friends.

Adventure mode is looking like it'll be Pirates! in the sky, which would be fantastic.

The higher tiers don't really interest me, but I'll probably back for $15. Besides I already backed heavily for Shroud of the Avatar and Planet Explorers, Guns of Icarus Online Adventure Mode I'll be backing next paycheck as well. But yeah... I loved Road Rash, I've never understood why EA hasn't resurrected it. It was one of those games they made back when EA actually made awesome games.

I'm looking forward to the new movie. Tom Hardy is excellent and he very much looks the part of Mad Max. Also the film isn't a remake, it takes place after the events of Beyond Thunderdome. To top it all off, they had like 300 some bikes, cars, and trucks they used in about 200 stunts, so we're talking old-school badass vehicle stunts, not over the top CGI.

As for the game? Doubt it will amount to anything, but as another poster said, something along the lines of Interstate '76 with Max and the Interceptor would be amazing.

5. Re: Neverwinter Open Beta This Month Apr 5, 2013, 01:31 WyldKat

I really wanted to love this game, but I just couldn't. It's simply not what I was expecting.

I was expecting a D&D game where working together with your party mattered, where there was a deep story, and also where there were lots of puzzles to solve and deadly traps.

The game is COMPLETELY trivial once you get in a party, all of the content, other than dungeons, were meant for soloing and it's painfully obvious. Classes are no where as deep as they are in real D&D with each class watered down into a pigeonhole. Wanna shoot fireballs as a wizard? Tough, here's a bunch of ice spells. The story is super linear which I could handle if there were some Bioware character development/dialogue options. The whole level design is pretty linear too, it's definitely not what you'd expect for an MMO. Again that'd be fine if it was a party oriented game, but it isn't, at least not the main story. Puzzles were trivial and traps barely did any damage.

I won't even get into the pay2win nature of the cash shop, or the nonsense with identification scrolls and how they are constantly needed and oh guess what, they're a cash shop purchase too.

The only saving grace of this game is the Foundry. I played a lot of REALLY well designed quests in it. Seriously they should have had the fans do the main story for this game.

EDIT: I feel I was a bit harsh above. The combat is fun, but it feels a bit stiff because it locks you down in place as opposed to a system like Guild Wars 2/TESO where you are free to move and attack at the same time. However the physics they added can make combat very fun, especially if you punt an enemy off a tall ledge. It is not, however, that great of a D&D game, especially not in the style of Neverwinter Nights. Don't go in expecting that, or anything deep really.

I'll be playing for the Foundry alone, but I went from considering the $60 Founder pack to not wanting to spend a dime, ever, on the game.

The Super Adventure Box is amazing.

ArenaNet loves to go all out for holiday events but this one takes the cake. A group of four friends and I spent four hours in it last night and we only got halfway through the "game". The game itself plays like what would happen if you took Super Mario Bros and Zelda, mixed them together and added in a touch of Golden Axe/Gauntlet/Castlevania. I even got a Mario 64 vibe from it too.

It's a blast and I wish it was staying. It's more than an April Fools joke, it's a love letter to old school games, there are plenty of hilarious references too. For example, go into a shop and you'll find you can smash not only pots, but everything the shop keeper owns. All the while he'll be making passive aggressive quips at you.

In the 90's we had cutscenes, in the 00's we have QTEs. Id like to go back to the cutscenes please, they might be just as immersion breaking but at least I dont have the feeling of finger raping my keyboard or mouse.

As long as they aren't those 90s cutscenes with real actors in them. Eep...

Unless we're talking about Wing Commander 3/4... or Under A Killing Moon...

That's really a damn shame. I've been playing TR single player and I absolutely love it, even with the QTEs which I think it would have been better without.

The multiplayer modes just didn't make any sense, the only thing that would have made sense was perhaps a CoOp campaign with CoOp puzzle solving like that Guardian of Light game. I have absolutely zero desire to run around and shoot at people in Tomb Raider, I'll do that stuff in ARMA 3 Alpha. However solving puzzles and collecting relics with friends? That sounds fun! It's a Tomb Raider game, and they nailed the puzzle platforming this time. I want to RAID TOMBS.

Do yourselves a favor and get Kerbal Space Program if you haven't already, that is unless, you value spending hours of your life not on the computer.

How is Starforge? The concept looks neat but I haven't played it. Can you build vehicles, spaceships? How moddable is it?

OpticNerve wrote on Mar 13, 2013, 00:58:
Gonna post this here but apparently the game itself is pretty broken in terms of some gameplay mechanics:

AI - This is why services and traffic are broken

The gist of it is that the actual Sims (people) don't have their own specific jobs to go do and homes to stay at. What happens is that they pick the nearest house and the nearest job which screws up the AI and causes really big traffic jams which clogs up the roads and causes a big cascading effect. Given how tiny the map-size is, IMO this is just a pretty lazy way of handling things.

I read something to the same effect earlier on Reddit.

This is why, even if city sizes were increased 10 fold and online was removed I still wouldn't purchase it.

The game is fundamentally flawed at a design level. In fact because of these issues (especially sims not caring what house they sleep in or job they work at) makes the actual simulation a huge step back from Sim City 4.

Let's put it this way.. if an artist can shit in a can and call it art, or if Yoko Ono can scream into a mic and call it art, than many, many videogames can and should be considered art.

Not all of them mind, just as lots of movies, music, and books aren't, but many of them. It's snobbish and ill-informed to say otherwise.

No more "Your computer is too weak, so we had to use a cloud based server to handle all these computations" crap? And then Will Wright with "Building cities was a fad. Managing a small village, to keep it financially afloat, THATS the new shit"

This debacle is so funny, i havent got the time to be angry anymore

Yeah... after running Far Cry 3 and Tomb Raider on Ultra settings (except for TressFX till they fix that silly bug)I have to call bullshit on this one.

It's complete and utter crap that it's impossible to make the game offline only. Packet sniffers have found that the only "computations" done on EA servers is resource sharing in the region and the worldwide market calculations. SO essentially, all critical systems are handled on your own PC.
