[Nvidia driver] 177 was the last time you could turn on dual core support in Left 4 Dead without the horrible multi second long pauses.

That may be, but there is at least a workaround in L4D:

Options,
video,
advanced,
multicore rendering. Set this to Disabled.

Despoiler,

Agreed. Most people nowadays are so ADHD jaded on the forums (not just with WAR Online - most games). All the whiners expect a magical blowjob with their purchase of said game and wonder why they didn't get it - or why it doesn't feel the same as the previous blowjob they thought they received when the genre\game was brand spanking new.

The problem is, all games have some particulars about them that you will not like. This doesn't mean 'you people' have to go all hyperbolic on the whole of the game. Be honest with yourself and others - and give a game a chance to grow, you negative fucks!

I'm sure others will definitely have something to bitch about when the free shit and the patch are implemented.

In any event, when I first saw the patch I thought to myself, "hmm, I'll patch this up. I haven't played this in a while. I'll check it out for a second to see how the game is with the patch."

I then spent the next 4.5 hours playing the game.

This game is so engrossing, it has the equivalent gravitational pull of a supermassive black hole.

Yea, those were good times, you throw someone in the lava with the whirlwind and they would cast the switch places spell and YOU would go in the lava.

Yeah, that's when you pray you could cancel it with air shield and then use levitate to just float to the side...

Another good one would be freeze, and then earth tremor.

40 Ter'Angreal in total to use. Awesome!

8. Re: Wheel of Time Game Plans Nov 12, 2008, 16:13 BurntSoul

The original Wheel of Time PC game was fantastic. For those that don't know, it only had a spell system. Multiplayer was amazing in that you had to truly outwit your opponent. When you used a 'spell', it would follow it's target until it hit. For example I could fire off a decay spell which, when hit with it, would slowly drain health over time. If my opponent saw the spell coming, he could use a 'reflect' power (if he picked it up) which would reflect the spell and bounce it back towards me at twice the speed. At which I could (if I timed it just right) fire off a spell that could teleport someone else and make them the new target of the spell. If the third combatant had any time at all, he could throw up a shield that could totally destroy that type of spell. The only effect that couldn't be defended against (I believe) was Balefire; think of it as a delayed railgun that could beam through any walls on the level and totally erase the recipient. I always liked the whirlwind spell - it was great fun picking someone up and throwing them into a vat of lava.

Good times, good times.

Has a disc check on the regular version, that's it as far as I know.

Yes, it uses the TAGES method. I'm not sure if the Steam version has it or not though. I tried to get it to run using GameJackal Pro (which for me has a 95% or higher success rate for all protections besides TAGES and StarForce) and TAGES went ahead and removed all good items from any containers in the game, as well as removed main characters and messed with combat such that I couldn't pull my sword out.

The game wasn't so fun for me after that so I put the damn DVD back in the drive. Oh well, at least it won't mess with my system like StarForce would. It just aggravates because if I forget to take the DVD out of the drive after playing, I can guarantee that my 1.5 year old daughter will (scratchy, scratchy).

Apparently the plot is based on someone's stories. I would love to get a hold of them in English if it was possible.

Necrosis,

I noticed you found the book. A great read of short stories, there. The main character (Geralt) is more believable than others because he (along with his friend) has faults and failures, but then also kicks ass Donkey Kong style. It's also refreshing to see a fantasy setting that is different in that it doesn't entirely take itself too seriously/over the top in stuffiness. If it weren't for the game, I wouldn't have picked it up. I'm glad I have both.

For those who have neither game nor book and would like a different kind of fantasy story, you cannot go wrong!

Controls on the PC are actually pretty dire. There's something like a 500-1000ms lag between moving the mouse and the game actually noticing. Very distracting.

Wait...is there lag because the graphics are set so high? If you set the eye candy to the 'craptastic' setting, does the lag go away? A 1/2 to 1 second lag will mean its going to suck donkey balls on the PC.

I think that's what burns me up the most. The fact that as an honest consumer I cannot get a refund on a totally shitty game. Even though they are trying to fight piracy on the PC, they are undermining themselves by basically waging a war with their legitimate consumer base as well. Because of this, in the future I won't be able to buy a title on the PC anyway.

Either way, it wouldn't work effectively as anti-piracy measure. Your example of Alcohol 120% isn't really a great one - you can find it at every torrent site known to man.

Ahh, damn. That sucks. I thought I would have been at least better than the mess we see now.

News Comments > Ubisoft: EndWar PC Impacted by Piracy
14. Re: No subject Oct 8, 2008, 11:02 BurntSoul

Hardware chips would never work. There would always be some vendor willing to make a non-chipped motherboard just to one-up the others. Plus every casual user usually has a tech savvy friend who could remove/defeat it. I see idiots all the time in my shop with hard drives full of games/movies/porn that their friends showed them how to download.

First off (for any publishers and/or devs that are reading this), I do understand that companies want to protect their product from piracy, and rightfully so. I appreciate that you want to make sure you get the money that you deserve for making your game.

But.....could someone please tell me what is wrong with - instead of DRM on the game disks - having to register and tie an e-mail address first with a unique serial number and an account name to the game with a specific PC...a one time 'activation' if you will?

Then the game disks (or downloaded content) could be copied as many times as you wanted - no DRM + free distribution of the game on the web! Also, you have tied your single license with your email address, account and the specific hardware you installed it on. This should generate a unique serial number to put into your game and there you go.

If you wanted to, you should be able to uninstall or re-install on that computer any number of times. You could install the game content from the game disks to a different computer, but since it doesn't have all the information to properly match the licensed copy to the hardware it will not work.

However, if your machine crashes and burns, or you need to do a major upgrade - no sweat. You would log into your account, unregister the license that was bound to the 'old' computer, and re-register to the new or updated computer.

There you go, Piracy averted.

I've seen this work. Ironically, the makers of Alcohol 120% do this. It seems to work well.

Of course, if the company were to go belly up, something else would have to be done like a patch to remove the way the licensing is done, or another company could host the licensing database\site for a fee or something - but at least no DRM measures have to be installed with the game, potentially screwing your computer over.

That and the whining fucking stops with the publishers, which means they can feel more comfortable with developing for the PC again.

So I ask you, doesn't this sound good (or at least better than what is now done) - or is there a gaping hole of Buccaneerish logic I've missed?

News Comments > Spore DRM Lawsuit
16. Re: uninstalling SecuROM Sep 24, 2008, 12:38 BurntSoul

Besides they are agreeing to install the game, NOT the DRM program.

What I'm worried about is this: Okay in the future, the DRM ruling is resolved with EA. EA has to include an obvious message before install that says 'SecureROM will be installed for this game on your computer or else it's not going to run'. No, not even that. It also says this on the box. In huge letters. You go home, open the box, throw the DVD in the drive, get the message or something similar above before installation starts. You go, 'Oh crap, didn't want that - but I bought the game!'

Yes, the customer is stupid for buying the game and not reading the box. But it happens.

So, can we get a refund for the game after it's been opened?

Not the way things are right now...

So EA seems to be running consumers through a process or eventuality by which PC content can only be loaded digitally, instead of having hard copies. Either that, or EA will get pissed enough in its war against its own PC gaming consumers and just use this as an excuse not to develop for them anymore.

11. Re: No subject Aug 26, 2008, 19:19 BurntSoul

I think that it's more a case of, if you already have COD4, why would you bother with another shooter that's pretty much the same, but with lower production values and gameplay that doesn't hold up against it either?

While I agree that CoD4 is superior to Frontlines, I think they are trying more to be like the BF or SW: Battlefront series.

Also, one thing that cannot happen at all in Frontlines (and is a good thing) is the 'rollover' effect you'll see in CoD4 where a player will be able to use their helicopter and kill another 7 people (is it 7 or 9? cannot remember), whereby they are able to instantly use the helicopter again. Enough people on the map and they can just do this multiple times. It's just annoying, I don't care what side you're on.

I agree that the vehicles are clunky, and that it's ridiculous that they finally will be adding joystick support. However, even though it uses the Unreal 3 engine, it does not feel at all like unreal tournament 3. It's a different pace all together; not frenetic like UT 3, and not as realistic (if you can call it that) as BF2. But a couple of things are fun that I like. You get to use robot remotes (remote helicopters or mini tanks) if you choose that 'role' on spawn and you get to 'see' through their camera.

You have multiple classes to choose from, and when you get kills or conquer an area on the map you gain experience towards powered up functions of the role you chose. These effects you gain are a one time shot that slowly 'charges' back up over time. You start with a first level effect, and with more kills/experience a second and a third will become available to you.

For example, you can choose an air support role and the first level for that role is a precision missle or bomb that will destroy a unit in one hit (note that you CAN miss). The second level would be a cluster bomb and the third level is a gunship. Well, that's what the West has. The Russians 2nd level is a carpet bomb and their third level is a fuel air bomb.

The main gametype is Frontlines, where unlike a conquest game, you must attack specific areas on the map; when you get that area, your frontline moves forward.

The downsides to the game is that there isn't a commander role for your team, you won't see many people forming squads though it's available and like others said it had a rough start with so so reviews, so not as many people initially bought the game on the PC side. Support has been slow going which hurts it even more, and they are finally going to implement a patch soon that enables joystick support, adds options to the server list screen and adds more official maps + the conquest game type.

While it has similar gameplay features that the Battlefield or Star Wars Battlefront series has, it definitely has a different feel. You should give it a try - at least the demo if it's available.

Hope it runs okay. Though I don't see why it shouldnt. GTA4 isn't that impressive graphically.

NKD,just curious: What is graphically impressive to you? Just so we have a baseline of your opinion. Seriously though, I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass or cause some kind of flame war.
