Besides that has blues been over-ran with console lobbyist? Who wants to play portal on the ps3 or xbox when they can get it for PC on steam, and play it early once the PC community works together to open it up?

Bit melodramatic, aren't we?

People that want to play a game on a specific platform doesn't make them any less of a person for not wanting to play it on the same platform as you.

I buy what is going to get me the best value for my buck...and that is basically the PS3 version. I hold no allegiance to any platform, I hold more allegiance to my money.

Amazon's deals for the console versions is the best (effectively making it $35)...especially if you want to suck it up, get the PS3 version, and take the free PC/Mac version.

How do you get that deal? The game (PS3 version) is coming up as $54.99 for me.

You get a $20 credit when you pre-order either the PS3 or 360 version.

Get a $20 Amazon.com Credit
Pre-order Portal 2 for PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 and receive $5 off the original price of $59.99 as well as $20 in promotional credit toward the purchase of items shipped and sold by Amazon.com.

It's a post-credit, which is why I said "effectively"

"As a tester, my job is finding bugs and doing what they call 100% coverage run test. They also called us into meetings and asked us our opinions about a lot of things. I said the game was boring and doomed to be a failure."

This stuck out to me...

Now see, I've been bounced around as QA for years amongst a lot of products, Blizzard's being one...they don't generally do anything of that sort and unless something changed in how their system works, it's highly improbable that what they said is true.

QA at Blizzard is like QA pretty much anywhere in the industry. He's actually describing out-of-house QA (you know, closed/open beta tests which do nothing other than gauge user-feedback).

100% coverage run? What the hell is that? Thats not regression testing, that's not white/black boxing, and if I guess is right, that is nothing more than going "they wanted us to play all of it completely", which is actually not even part of internal QA scheduling at any company I've worked with (again, Blizzard being one of them).

So I'm going to take everything they said with one huge grain of sea salt.

Reading the preview in OXM made it sound interesting, playing as Umbrella members and being basically assholes through-out the entire game.

That and the possibility to alter established events, like killing Leon before he can have his own game makes for some interesting switches to canon.

I doubt the concept. It's odd that they offer those 2 factions, instead of forcing the player to balance between economy and an healthy environment.
I mean, what other requirements can there be in the future in city building? You don't need fire watchers, a church or a local depot just around each corner. So what is left from the Anno concept?

If based on a similar ground as the previous titles, then it would suggest you can have a mix, but there are always two different extremes to take.

As for the lack of other 'needs', if you think things like those you describe couldn't be implemented in a meaningful way, you may wish to take a look at some other examples of 'future' cultural and safety services.

Yea, people said the same thing about the coolness of Bioshock's plasmids and how MP would be 'nifty'...how'd that work out with Bioshock 2?

It may have been nifty if Irrational Games had made it. More likely they made completely the right choice by not including it in Bioshock.

Ken Levine seems to have completely the right attitude about multiplayer. To leave it out unless they can come up with something very unique and interesting; not just deathmatch with plasmids. http://www.1up.com/news/irrational-games-undecided-multiplayer-bioshock

I think Bioware also understands that their greatest strength is story telling. And it's not in their interest to get into the oversaturated online shooter market unless they come up with a novel sort of MP.

I forgot the sarcasm tags, I'm sorry....

Both sadly, and happily, the Tolkien Estate has nothing to do with the licensing of the Lord of the Rings and/or The Hobbit. If they did, there'd be nothing other than the books to compliment each other.

The purpose of the platform isn't to deliver free games, it's to be a marketplace, and I was critiquing the marketplace. While the snafu with the free game promotion was annoying, it was far from the biggest problem I experienced.

The comment about the bitching was aimed mostly at mag's DRM-bitchfest.

And I never said that because I didn't have any issues that no one else could, I just posted to actually say I didn't have any issues. No underlying message, no hidden meaning, just a statement of my experience.

I can't wait for BB to close shop. I stopped by one today, just to kill some time before an appointment. They're prices on blu rays were on average $10 higher than amazon.

And Lego Star Wars 3? That amazon and EB both list online at $49.99? $59.99 for the 360 version at BB!

As I was walking out, one of the dorks yells "Help ya find something bro?!" and I was so close to saying "Yeah! Amazon prices!"

Well, you cannot really blame Best Buy here for selling at MSRP...that's a whole other fish to fry.

Finally, DA2 was cracked before it was even released so it didn't really stop any piracy to begin with.

Going to comment on this...

That's false...they had no crack prior to the actual date of release due to the time lock feature. They had workarounds to install, but none to actually play the game.

Now, the day it was unlocked, yes, there were cracks coming out of every corner you can shake a stick at. Of course, for a game using little to no protection, it makes plenty of sense.

One thing a lot of people forget about snipers, real snipers, is that they are an arm for psychological warfare as well as general.

With their ability (trained marksmen anyways) to attempt to never reveal their location they can really demoralize opposing forces. You never really even have to actually hit anyone for them to be a successful mission, get them to the point that they are shook up enough that they blindly fire wasting what ammunition they have, take more chances in running around making them a better target, or even to the point to make them paranoid enough to actually shoot each other if they get separated.

Welcome to the party, you're a few hours late, so everyone else discussed this already and went home.

No need to be obnoxious about it. Some people actually don't sit around their computers all day reading and commenting on every story of note as it unfolds. Doesn't mean they can't have an opinion.

I figured it'd be fine considering the fact that Blue posted an updated version of this very discussion working out the issues...but no, someone had to come in and crow off about EA being bastards without actually taking into account that we're past all of that now.

News Comments > Tribes: Ascend Announced
45. Re: Tribes: Ascend Announced Mar 12, 2011, 03:03 DarkCntry

Jerykk wrote on Mar 12, 2011, 00:49:
That gets the basics of the gameplay mechanics from Tribes controllable.

Except then you still have the issue of inventory management, command screen usage, voice commands, etc, not to mention the inability to perform more advanced tactics like disc-jumping, mine-discing, grenade-jumping, body-blocking and midair flag-passing. Finally, Tribes requires that you lead your aim more than any other shooter ever. Analog sticks are not conducive to this. They tried porting T2 to the PS2 and ended up putting in so much aim assist that your reticule basically locked on to enemies.

The aim assist is really the only downside that I can foresee. There's enough buttons to cover all actions required. For inventory management, again using the Back/Select buttons could handle that. Seeing as online play is probably going to be the bread and butter, Command actions could link to Start. Voice commands, outside of actually using voice, could be linked to the analog stick pressing bringing up a radial.

As for the actual gameplay itself, all it'd take would be time to get used to it and you could probably get back into doing all the old "ski flying" and flag-throwing touchdowns that I remember doing in the old games. Much in the same way when FPS's first made it to 3D-space on consoles everyone and their brother decried that they wouldn't get used to it to where they could pull of similar (if not equal) types of maneuvers as their old PC counterparts.

I will admit that Tribes did bring the whole learning to aim part, and that is really the one thing most console-strict players will not be use to using.

Tribes cannot work on a console and if Ascend is indeed being designed as a multiplatform game, it will fail to replicate what made Tribes so great. The other issue is that different people have very different memories of what made Tribes great. People who played T1 hated T2 and T:V. People who didn't play T1 loved T2 and hated T:V. People who didn't play T1 or T2 loved T:V. Every sequel fractured the player base and it's not possible to make a game that appeases all three different player bases because their values conflict with one another.

I'm one of the few that liked each games on their added merits, standalone. They each brought something new, albeit they all had their downsides.

I generally try to take a game, sequel or not, on it's own merits without comparing it to one before it, especially if that game is only a sequel in name and there's no story to continue from other than some overarching premise.

Tribes 1 was what I loved but it seems that Ascend is being touted as a successor to T2, so that doesn't bode well for me.

Depending on what they take from T2 I don't see why a lot of original Tribes players will dislike it. But that's a personal choice and one someone is allowed to have, even if it doesn't make sense to me personally.
