News Comments > EA Games on Steam
50. Re: EA Games on Steam Dec 20, 2008, 11:25 Mostly_Harmless

Until these games are available in Europe I can at least hope that having a different version of Mass Effect out there for the crackers to work with will lead to a proper, working crack for the retail version so I can then pick up a copy of ME from ebay for a tenner and not worry about the DRM stopping me from installing it in the future.

Why NA only? If these games were available in Europe too I would be downloading Mass Effect and Dead Space right now, these are both games that I wanted to buy but didn't due to the DRM in the retail versions.

Presumably there are only 24 prizes because only 24 people could get the PC version working.

Dont be silly, they're allowing multiple prizes per person

News Comments > Used Games Hurt Game Quality?
69. Re: Used Games Hurt Game Quality? Dec 9, 2008, 01:46 Mostly_Harmless

Correct. You own the package and its contents, but the software itself on the CD/DVD remains the property of the developer that you're, in-effect, renting.

While technically correct, I don't give a shit about the licensing laws regarding games, the games I bought are mine and they are staying mine unless I decide to sell them on or do whatever else I want with them and there is nothing anyone can do about it, especially as I don't buy games with limited install DRM.

Maybe Mr Braben should consider a different line of work, maybe a move to one of those many other industries where revenue from used sales is passed on to the original developer.

You can't buy a 59 Chevy and expect GM to upgrade it to a 2009 Corvette. Yet, that is what you seem to expect from game publishers.

Would the 59 Chevy have shipped brand new to customers with only three wheels and no seats with Chevy expecting customers to fit the missing parts weeks down the line at their own expense?

If devs want to avoid bandwidth costs to support titles further down the line they could always release games that are less buggy and actually finished in the first place.
I used to have a lot of respect for David Braben what with him being the co-author of the best game ever, but after reading recent articles where he has taken issue with the used game market he just comes over as a greedy prick.

I'm guessing that with this being an EA game it will contain the usual DRM crap. I'm interested in playing this one so I think I will go down the used copy + crack route, the same as I did with Dead Space. At least that way I get a legit copy that I can always install as many times as I like and EA don't get my money and not to mention the satisfaction of knowing that DRM designed to kill the used game market has had the exact opposite effect on me.

13. Re: GTA4 PC Problems Dec 4, 2008, 10:16 Mostly_Harmless

If this game gets patched to a more playable state and there is a way to circumvent the bloatware requirements in the future, I may pick this game up out of the bargain bin. Right now I would rather install Realplayer, Norton antivirus and switch to AOL than go through the hassle of installing this as a legitimate paying customer.

I just entered the user name and password on the site and a chunk of the background cracked away and you can see that there is a picture of some sort underneath, my guess is that if we keep going back a bit more of it will break away every day and gradually reveal the picture.

Assassin's Creed 2 on it's way already? and here's me still trying to quit back to my desktop from Assassin's Creed 1, I'd better get a move on if I want to get it done before late 2009.

News Comments > 96% of Games Unprofitable?
16. Re: 96% of Games Unprofitable? Nov 22, 2008, 06:35 Mostly_Harmless

I think that the headline should actually read 96% of games Unbuyable?

If games publishers and producers actually invested more of their time in delivering good, finished games that actually live up the the hype they spend months, even years shoving down our throats as we patiently await their releases instead of trying to control the market with DRM, fixing reviews and working out how to gouge as much cash from us while generally acting like a bunch of corporate cuntdrones and shitting all over those of us that actually buy the games and keep these asshats in jobs, then they might make a few more ££££. They certainly would from me.

As much as I like Steam, The only games worth buying on there at the moment are the reduced older titles and the weekend bargains (HL is 98c this weekend). Buying full priced games on there is just too expensive, especially some third party titles, I paid exactly half the price at retail for COD4 than it would have cost on Steam.

Yes, VC was much better than SA, all of that childish Gangsta crap killed SA for me. I'm going to pick this one up on retail, by the time you add taxes and with the £ not as strong against $ as it was it will most likely cost more on Steam than ordering it from Play or Amazon, and I'll know for sure that any mods will work.

News Comments > Dead Space PC Controls Nerfed?
28. Re: No subject Oct 19, 2008, 17:23 Mostly_Harmless

Am I the only one who is reading this as it's not exactly a problem with the console style controls not translating well to the PC version, it's because they tried to alter the movement etc in the PC version to make the game feel like you are playing on the console/pad when you are actually using a mouse/keyboard. If that's the case then it will probably be just as horrible to play on a PC with a pad as it would with a mouse/keyboard.

I'm interested in this one for the PC but I'm fully expecting a clunky console port, I need a demo or a couple of trusted reviews before I order. That and I need to know what kind of DRM scheme it uses, limited activations = no purchase. Any word on the DRM for the PC version yet?

News Comments > Source Mods on Steam, Episode One on Sale
7. Re: If we have this mod, do we need them? Oct 4, 2008, 13:34 Mostly_Harmless

I already had 3 of them installed but I un-installed them and then re-downloaded them because my versions were out of date. When you install the mods from Steam it doesn't put them in your mods folder and you have more options available from the Steam menu such as backing up and un-installing. I'm hoping mods installed this way will auto update as well, one of the problems I had with some of them was finding some servers were not on the same version as me.

News Comments > Spore DRM Post of the Day
24. Re: No subject Sep 29, 2008, 17:09 Mostly_Harmless

I too could list the (ever growing) bunch of games that DRM has put me off buying recently, but the other way that this situation has affected me is that I no longer pre-order games. I got caught out by Bioshock as I already had it paid for and pre-loaded on steam by the time I heard about the DRM.
I will not buy any game now until the DRM type has been confirmed and I will not buy any game period if it has Digital Rental Management.
Fool me once....
