If you were to play it, you would discover that you can level quickly, that leveling is relatively flat, and that AO has its own good points. Try it some time and tell me what you think.

So it would seem, 12+ hours in 9 backers for $694.

You could always play it and decide for yourself.

There will be a scripted storyline, but I get your point.

Starflight and Star Control 2 are definite influences, and guide our plans for the scope of the story.
Armada Online is an rpg. Ship guns autofire at your target, regardless of facing direction. Control and structure is most like War3, but locked to one unit (some can summon small craft, mechs, or stations). There is a large open exploration area where most of the story will take place called Delta 3, but also special mission zones like the Neutral Zone that plays like Dota, or The Burn which is multi tower defense.
Years ago when I discussed the issue with Paul Reiche, he said that the early use of spaceships in simple arcade games prejudiced some people against games like Star Control 2. Some people see spaceships and just assume it must be a shooter, and have no depth. "Make it more like WoW" is what we get.
It would be really cool if you tried Armada Online. There is a lot that is good about it.

Nightfend,
Reply:
“Without a major publisher and advertising budget, this game will die a silent death.”

--Silent, but deadly. We’ll stay independent. We plan to put all our resources into the game itself.
The idea that “working with a manufacturer is essential” is fascinating in the context of online games. Publishers deal with an enormous number of issues that can be replaced with a download link.
The issues publishers must deal with are neither good nor bad, but simply the realities of operating their business. Publishers manufacture goods, maintain the flow of products to support a sales and marketing staff, pay sales commissions, coop fees, licensing fees, shipping fees, and warehousing/inventory control costs. The issues surrounding the physical distribution of goods can lead a publisher to cancel or release projects that are 75% complete, pressure developers to keep gameplay under 10 hours to avoid self-competition, and aggressively support games that they might not think are any good.
Perhaps a publisher would treat AO right, do a fantastic job marketing it, and support its development to help make it an enduring gem, but we’ll never know. We’ll just let people download it.

“I actually kind of liked the original Armada game for the Dreamcast (though it got old pretty quickly as your ship powers really didn't change enough over time and there wasn't really a storyline to get behind).”

--Then you will be even happier this time.

Dear MBH,
Screens are in News. I'll change the name of the news link to say "news and screenshots" until we get a preview page up.
About the forum, we figured it was nicer to keep the page elegant and open to everyone, like this one. ;>
