I wouldn't say they are an essential purchase. It makes more sense to evaluate the original Guild Wars, then get the expansions if you like it. Personally, I hated GW, so I'm glad I didn't buy the expansions without trying the base game first.
not sure this is fair, see i didnt really like guild wars 1, then i bought nightfall a few years laters and have to say it was a EXCELLENT play thru; the "hero pets" or whatever you call them gavet he game depth that i always thought it was missing;
for any first time buyer, id recomend you buy nightfall first, and if you like that then buy the others, as frankly its by far the best campaign.

its worth noting i aint no GW far boi, ive played through factions and nightfall only once , the first campaign broed me to death, but treated as a kinda diabllo game; its very good no sub fee's and a decent comunity to boot. i also for a while enjoyed watching the PvP matches

its the Gamebryo engine, DAoC used a predecessor to that called NetImmerse engine. so in a sense your right, Gamebryo also powers oblivion and fallout however (+ a million other things you wouldnt guess).

i didnt like it, i have to admit, i dont often let visuals put me off games (i still play AO for gods sake), but the 2003 graphics really put me off, that and i found the game play pretty stale. 
i think it really hits home when you realise this game was built in the same engine as fallout3. :/

guess I'm just getting old maybe. It might just be too quick for me now. Maybe tomorrow on a couple cups of coffee I'll have another go. Maybe just need some practice... I don't remember that zoom thing though. Is that new?
stick at it mate, when i joined closed beta around 4 months ago i SUCKED i mean REALLY sucked.
Now i am farily decent, ill never be the leet kiddie i used to be, but now in team games i dont feel like i am getting raped all the time...

virtually NO progress since the 1999 expansion "xtension" for x beyond the frontier, trashy new interface and they have not fixed the main problem, gash flight mechanics.
but x beyond the frontier and then extension, the expansion; its better than this and has more charicter.
x3 is pretty, other than that, extension is better in every way.

not making AO2 was funcoms mega sin in my book, AO to this day has the deepest of charicter tweeking, making a low level twink in AO is seriously hard. its great.
love this game, and the world at the time was amazingly put together.
in fact, my dirty secret is i STILL login now and then (not often), but i do still wander around rubi-ka doing things, its pretty cool still - depite the fact the engine is like wading through mud.

Ohhh christ, DSmart is posting in a topic and i agree with him, whats the world comming to? heh.
I use linux or some type of BSD every single day - its a great platform for firewalls and other such server type stuff; But frankly, anyone who persists on using it for "trying to" game is ether living in 1999 or is just a gluton for punishment.
I rememmber in the late 90's when a few gaming houses put out linux versions of games, there was a GREAT space sim called terminus that came with both linux binarys and a windows installer. It took me literally a full week to make the game work on my SuSe install back then and predictably i ended up running it in windows cause the performance was THAT much better.
I think realistically if people wanna use linux on a day to day basis thats cool, from a desktop point of view its got lots of cool stuff to offer, even more so for a server platform; but its all about using the right tool for the job.
Gaming on linux is like using a hammer to smash a self-tapping screw in and then complaining the woods fucked and the screw wasnt a nail.

personally, i really like the random aspect. its what makes the game fun. even in vrs.
this isnt a competative game, if you want that id suggest quakelives beta, CS, or even to a certain extent TF2.
this is just good old fun in my opinion, and the best thing about hte game for me, is the amount of "lul" moments it produces.

i dont subscribe anymore, but thats mainly because that i only really like EvE as a mmo, all the rest are not my style (i am a sandbox fan).
still, tortage should take about 7 hours to compleate.
i'll prolly fire my acocunt back up when dx10 lands just to take some screen shots lol

great great game, ive owned it for just 2 days and i cant stop playing it.
personally i am far form a fan boi of valve, i fucking hated Halflife, and Halflife2 (or shall i just call it .. loading screen game), and i think whilst TF2 was excellent fun, lets face it it butchered PROPER fortress CTF with this zerg mode games.
anyhow my point is, didnt like valves games in general, liked TF2 and CS a bit but they are both ripped off mods with dev polich on them.
this game however, i am really digging. the servers are a fucking mess and nothing we are used to thesedays (meaning silly lobby system and such) but having said that its AWSOME fun to play.
i do think its a little short on content but frankly the way the mobs are randomised keeps it interesting.
lots of fun, i guess longevity remains to be seen, but still its lots of fun, if very expensive for what is a professionally made modification.

Stick a fork in this one, DRM killed it for me. Ive been a long time supporter and have bought every CnC game thats come out but I absolutly will not support EA or their screwed up DRM. So I spent muy money on Fallout 3.
unlucky, it sux, unless you like walking around.. lots.
