News Comments > EEDAR: Marketing Sells More Than Good Reviews
6. Re: EEDAR: Marketing Sells More Than Good Reviews Nov 16, 2009, 19:16 ldonyo

Then there are games like Kane & Lynch, which no amount of marketing could save. According to recent articles linked here at Blue's, EA spends more on marketing than on development, yet EA keeps losing money. Divnich's theory about marketing influence is clearly based on cherry-picked sales figures and ignores the broader reality of the video game marketplace.

Maybe Randy Pitchford is Bobby Kotick's equally-retarded twin?

That's good news for fans of Blade Runner, as I don't think Gearbox would have done the Blade Runner license justice.

The lemmings have already paid, so this cry will go unheard. Maybe not buying the game would have helped their cause, but I doubt it. ActiBlizzard doesn't care about their customers' wants or needs, they only care about taking money from them.

The gaming industry is having no trouble monetizing transactions outside the initial game purchase. Fallout 3 is a prime example of that and it is hardly the only one.

The gaming industry's real problem is the same as the movie and recording industries' problem. They all churn out far more crap than hits and the crap is very expensive to produce.

It's a testament to idiocy and lemming-like behavior by people that should never be left unattended near sharp objects.

ActiBlizzard has totally fucked PC gamers with this, so they must figure one more kick to the balls won't be noticed.

MW2, console gaming on your PC! If they're going to do it that way, they may as well market it that way.

Wasn't there a similar statement from the guy running Westwood 1 for EA right before EA canned the whole studio?

I don't bother with most video game reviews, especially ones that are posted on sites like Destructoid. I also don't bother with any video game review that comes out in the first week after the game is released.

News Comments > EA Layoffs?
11. Re: EA Layoffs? Nov 9, 2009, 16:36 ldonyo

This has been a pattern to EA for several years now. They buy a development outfit, churn out one good and two or three mediocre (at best) titles, bleed all of the passion from that game franchise and then lay off all of those developers to try and cut costs. The road through the gaming industry is strewn with the wreckage of EA acquisitions of the past and there will be plenty more in the future.

Where did EA find actual cash to use for this acquisition? They bleed red ink for more than two years running and someone still loans them hundreds of millions to buy someone?

The Ninja Lane piece reads like an Nvidia marketing brochure. It also has no ATI cards in the mix for a true comparison of PhysX-enabled versus non-PhysX-enabled gaming.

The essay on Boing Boing paints a vastly different picture of life in Venezuela than the one Chavez puts forth. I hope Guido does not get jailed for writing such a critical piece.

If these clowns didn't own so many Congress critters, this would be hysterical. However, since these clowns do own enough Congress critters to cause serious trouble, we have to hope that the FCC will pay much more attention to people with a clue than to the MPAA.

I almost wet myself laughing at that! Thanks, Creston!

12. Re: Digital Dragon Age Woes Nov 4, 2009, 18:08 ldonyo

I pre-ordered, pre-loaded, unlocked and installed the Digital Deluxe Edition from Direct2Drive with no trouble at all. Unlike most of the articles on Ars, this is just a collection of gripes Ben found in various forums across the 'Net and added about $0.005 worth of insight to them.

The Direct2Drive instructions were very clear with the download links and all codes on one page. The bonus content instructions are:

Bonus Items

Bonus items require a unique key to activate online. Please do not share this information!

Thank you for purchasing Dragon Age™: Origins. Please find instructions below on how to activate and redeem your codes.

Instructions on how to redeem

To redeem your exclusive items, follow the instructions below. Please note that you will require a Bioware or EA Online account to redeem your codes.
1. Launch Dragon Age™: Origins
2. From the Main Menu, select "Downloadable Content"
3. Log in with your BioWare/EA Online Account
4. Select "Redeem Code"
5. Enter the codes from the table above
6. Follow the on-screen instructions and complete the redemption process.

If you have your DLC codes, these instructions should work for anyone, regardless of where you purchased your copy of DA:O.

Fudge Pachter is flapping his gums again. He'll be wrong, ass always, but this does not seem to deter anyone from printing his babblings.

I think it would be hilarious if Uwe got just as many fans to show up as Spinal Tap did. Wouldn't Uwe's autograph make those movies worth less?

1. Re: Are music games ripping off artists Nov 2, 2009, 19:15 ldonyo

No, they're not. The royalty comparison of one song in a game to an entire CD is ludicrous because it is not explained at all. It just states, "...reveals that a sale of a music game featuring a musician’s track earns them just one tenth of what an equivalent music CD would generate." Is that one tenth of the whole CD or one tenth of one song on a whole CD?

That just might pay for one semester. Not that the scholarship is bad, it isn't, just that USC is incredibly expensive.
