a 31% jump in home contents claims involving VR headsets last year
So, basically all the story is saying is that VR usage has gone up about 30% in the last year. The headline makes it sound like it is a big rise in overall claims.

Alienware is overpriced garbage. It's Alienware that creates the high price, not QD-OLED.
The first QD-OLED TV's will cost about double as much as the most popular LG OLED TV's, so the Alienware was quite a bit cheaper than I was expecting.
Sure, this monitor is smaller and has fewer pixels than the 48" LG that has the same MSRP, but it's also a better technology, especially for PC use. Currently available RGB OLED monitors sell for $3000 and $4000, for 27" and 32" sizes, respectively (those are 4K, but only 60 Hz, and not using QD tech)

(and the stupid requirement for the lighthouses like I really need movement tracking Valve spyware in my home)
Just like their maritime namesake, the lighthouse base stations do not track movement. They do not need to communicate with Valve, or even your own PC. They have an optional Bluetooth connection for firmware updates, and so your PC can automatically turn them on and off.

In the same post you are complaining about Valve and their motion tracking system, you say you were considering a Facebook product that requires 5 cameras. It just doesn’t add up.

The other difference was that people who wanted to play HL2 only needed to download an app. Nobody had to buy an extra $1,000 worth of specialized hardware on top of it, plus a PC capable of supporting that hardware.

Steam for HL2: Free
Index + hardware: $1,000-$2,000+
I had to buy a new PC to play HL2.

My current PC is comfortably above the minimum required specs for HL:A, and it will be four years old when HL:A is released. The requirements aren’t that much different than what would be required for a traditional flagship FPS single player game.

There was a weekend BOGO promotion, when Notch got married, but I don't think the free copies are included on the stats page. That was while Minecraft was still in "beta."

I think the mobile version was 10 cents for a while. Also, there is the $10 windows 10 edition. But I'm pretty sure all the java windows copies that were sold post release date were for the full price.

And they did this without any sales. Except for the first million or two copies during alpha and beta, which were 50% and 25% off, respectively, all copies have been at the full 26.95 price.

My PC is several years old, and still does fine for the kinds of games I play. But I'm going to build a new PC soon for VR. If there are enough others like me, and the VR thing takes off, there may be an uptick in sales for a segment of the PC market. Nvidia's gotta love that the minimum recommendation for the Oculus Rift is a 970.

It's interesting to me how the Phone industry is a race to the top, everyone wants the newest fastest phone, but most PC buyers get the cheapest laptop possible. I'd bet that the average phone screen resolution is higher than the average laptop resolution.

Also, Apple pre-installs quite a bit of non-Apple software.

I think the only third party software Apple has ever preinstalled on iOS devices was Google maps and YouTube, and even those apps may have been put together by Apple. That was several years ago.

Such a bunch of horseshit. Some random app contains stuff that's vital to the OS. Sure, Tim Cook. Rolleyes

The reason you fuckers (and Android too) include that shit is because you get paid for it, and the reason you won't let people uninstall it is so you can meta-force people onto phones with more memory and because the payment you received for putting it on there in the first place probably mandated it.

Apple pays Apple to put Apple software on Apple devices? You aren't making sense. The only thing that Apple may receive compensation for is the default search engine setting.

Apple Music is the same price as Spotify and other music streaming services. The price is largely determined by the content providers. All this talk about Apple sheep and Apple tax is silly. I highly doubt that Apple will have a media streaming service that will cost significantly more than what other providers could charge for the same content.

That said, I can't imagine myself paying $40 a month for any TV/Movie streaming service.

Haha. In other words, we can never ever have a debate about anything. There's always some asshole element to any decent sized movement. If the presence of that element invalidates the whole thing, then people might as well never say anything about anything.

The problem is that gamergate was started by the "asshole element." The very first time the term was used was in a link to the quinnspiracy five guys video.

Joss Whedon even tweeting some comments on the Sarkeesian thing... when if his own shows were looked at under her lens, they'd all be full of the same tropes. Dollhouse being one, but you'd even not be hard pressed to find ones in Buffy.

The very first video on her youtube channel is a quite negative critique of Dollhouse. I would hope that Whedon would have tweeted what he did even if he had seen that video.

It seems like a lot of people are making a leap from "Sarkeesian points out tropes" to "Sarkeesian says that all the developers and players of these games are misogynists"

Is there a feature to help me find good curators? Perhaps a curator curator?

I would like to be able to order my games by when they were added to my library. I have almost 250 games, so when I get a new humble bundle, it can be a bit hard to find them.

Do you? Where does it say on Steam that Early Access games have to be finished? No really, i want to know

No. How would they define "finished"? DayZ still isn't finished but it has sold a ton. I think in both kickstarter and Early Access the only obligation to "finish" the project is an ethical one. Double Fine "finished" Space Base DF-9 by labeling the last release 1.0. The community by and large disagrees that it is finished, but there isn't anything they can do except not back DF in the future.
Yeah, I was talking about an ethical obligation. I just don't think early access is a good fit for DF. They have little capital, but high operating costs.

Did you read the thread? This game was never on Kickstarter.

Woops. Actually I did in fact read everything; I just made the mistake of mixing up Early Access and Kickstarter. But honestly, if you transplant the words "early access" for "kickstarter", I still think everything I said applies. You are guaranteed NOTHING by buying into an Early Access project, just as in Kickstarter. The biggest difference is that Early Access provides backers with something to actually play instead of just a dream which is all that Kickstarter provides until release.
The biggest difference with kickstarter is that the developer can set a minimum target. With early access, if no one buys, you have no money, but still have the obligation to finish the game.

I've defended DF for Broken Age, but their handling of SB DF-9 seems much more deserving of criticism (I haven't tried it though, except for the Amnesia Fortnight prototype, so I can't really judge)

For the record Cutter said this is one of the most idiotic business moves he has ever seen by a company (paraphrasing), and I am inclined to agree. This is beyond ridiculous - it's just obscenely and surreally absurd. He also made mention of "Ballmer Junior" making the same retarded decisions as his "daddy".

It's true. At least with shit like Google Glass and Occulus there are plenty of real world uses for them even if they never catch on as mainstream entertainment. So FB's purchase of OR - while stupidly overvalued - is still a pretty sane investment.

This is really - for all intents and purposes - a one man company with zero track record and one massively successful fluke. The game is about saturated as its going to get and is most likely starting a long slow downward slide. It will be remembered fondly as we remember Super Mario. But there is nothing that makes this worth even a 100 mil at this point - unless they have some very lucrative licensing deals going on for MC merch that we don't know about. So even at the outside of say 200 mil, it would be dumb but understandable as dumb things corporations do. But 2.5 billion? They won't even make the 500 million back on that. Their stock closed down today so lets see if that continues and their investors also think Nutella has gone nuts.

Yes, Cutter, there's nothing that makes it worth even $100 million, except the fact that it made over that much in profit last year.

You call me stupid, but fuck, man. Seriously, fuck. Minecraft brought in $330 million in revenue and $130 million in profit.

I'm the stupid one, but you just said $130 isn't even worth $100.
Between this and your "let's judge companies based on stock price," it's amazing that you ever open your mouth on financial decisions.
They made double that if you include Notch's profits.
So yes, according to Cutter's logic, a company that made $250+ million in profit last year isn't worth $100 million. And that was before the whole new line of Minecraft Lego sets, a Minecraft movie, and three new platforms.
