2. Next-gen consoles mean increased development costs, this is a repeat Apr 3, 2012, 12:58 JeffD

I've heard this exact same headline for when the ps2 came out, the ps3, and now the ps4 generation. However in todays world it could never be more false.

Anyone who knows how model or texture worth a shit will do so at a high detail to begin with. You don't know what hardware the game will end up on and starting low will make it suck. Downsizing both models and textures couldn't be more easier, and dx11 hardware is more then ready to do the job FOR you.

The jump from ps2/xbox to the 3/360 gen was pretty big and developers really needed to learn how to go all out on quality textures and models, but at the same time the development tech to build these things at higher polys and higher resolutions was made available and easier.

News Comments > EverQuest Now Free-To-Play
1. Re: EverQuest Now Free-To-Play Mar 17, 2012, 14:37 JeffD

Was all over this yesterday.. unfortunately if you are an old-time raider, be prepared to disappoint. Pretty much all of the LDoN augments (the first augs in the game) are marked prestige so if you played after plane of time, you are likely to log into a whole bunch of gear you can't wear.

It seems in several ways, EQ F2P was never ment to re introduce old players back to raiding. You can level up in bad gear, but that is about it.

I say no way. Games are getting bigger and bigger, and when you consider PS3 versions can almost double in size because of of the true HD bluray video, they can jump over the 12gb hurdle pretty easy. This is not something that can be easily replaced with net downloads and SD cards which can still run over 20 bucks for a 16gb version.

Kiosk sound like a nice idea but it is very hard to replace the easy to handle disc media.

Bullcrap its a myth. You've got a flooded sewer system, every man hole and sewer pipe is backed up to the surface. It isn't rocket science.

In other news... 2 noobs leave their doors unlocked and their security alarm system password is "password"

I can't think this game was worth 2 coins if these computer savvy programers have no idea how an external backup drive/tape/offline site works.

2. DRM is a response to the aforementioned fuck-nuts that fucked everything up, and as much as I hate it, I get it

DRM is used to prevent resale and to give companies complete control over the game. It has nothing to do with piracy and does not prevent piracy.

Quoted for the truth. No drm has prevented piracy, and pirats get the luxury of not having to deal with such crap ever. DRM is instead used to control the legit buyers copy for resale and multiple installation situations.

Still waiting to be impressed. Not a knock at raytracing, just the demo at hand. Come back to me when that is rendered in real time on a single cpu.

Crustacean Soup, the only possible tricks that come about deals with memory management. Reusing object models reduces their footprint in the video cards memory so having a whole forest of trees dosn't bring the video card to its knees. Thats it. If there are 12 statues on the screen, it does not matter if they are copies of each other or they are totaly different, the system still has to render 12 objects.

All of which is moot since currently all object are stored and rendered in system memory. And the grid like pattern is simply the side effect of lacking time to create a more unique map. When you got 3 weeks to make a demo, even less time to devote to the creation of the world you are going to display, automation tools like cut and paste and the rectangle tool are a fact of life.

How about you take your ass over to scene.org and take a look at just what "other" people get done in a meare 3 weeks (or more) of work. Not alot of that stuff is pretty, and alot of it suffers from the same computer generated layouts you see here.

Anyone can see that there are a lot of instances of a small number of highly detailed objects. Why didn't they at least put the instances on a procedural generated organic terrain instead of putting it on a grid that's blockier than Minecraft?

Youve got 3 weeks, lets see you do something better. ^^

This was an outstanding interview, and everyone who is skepticle and just suck it. He had this running on a laptop... IN SOFTWARE! The resolution was 4:5 1024x, but were talking a non optimised 3 week demo.

If anything however, it looks like if he is going to use GPUs, e is going to use them for crunching code, not rendering polygons. This is a whole new rendering system, and thus current 3d cards wouldnt work on it.

Also to the people who are complaining about the lack of variety in objects and textures, #1 most tech demos don't, this is purly a graphics department issue and your asking for the same amount of artwork put into a multi million doller game to be put into a free demo? #2 considering the number of unique objects littered in the ground, the number of objects in the demo are actually pretty vast. #3 Despite the repeated number of trees and such, the texture work is still pretty high resolution. Infact if anyone noticed near the end of the interview when he was looking at the bark on the ground, you could see the flat ground under the rocks which appeared to have a pixilated texture. Does this mean the engine is NOT doing texture smoothing atm???

Anyways, euclideon just seriously burned all naysayers, packed up its toys saying they don't need anything from us, and are going back to doing what they set out to do. And I will await them.

20. Re: Age of Conan Character Deletions Jan 12, 2010, 03:20 JeffD

Everquest did it ONCE.. it was a level 1 (or maybe it was a level 10 and under) wipe on any character not logged in within like a month. It was about half way through its life cycle.

I don't think wow has needed to do the same. The thing about wow is blizzard has shown themselves to be able to manipulate character data when the time to do so arises, so they have probably implemented compression and optimizations during large overhauls like expansions.

News Comments > Mythic on WoW's WAR "Imitation"
51. Re: Mythic on WoW's WAR Oct 21, 2008, 15:00 JeffD

Warhammer is a better game now than WoW is 4 years after being released.

Says you prophet. To bad the reviews.. most of the fans.. and the sales don't show it. %99 of its players agree its end game is severely lacking still. That coupled with the fact they still plan to release 2 of the beta classes points to a game that is simply unfinished.. and thus will be relegated to a distant second place with all the other WoW wannabies who are also unfinished.

WoWs graphic dated? sure...its 4 years old. Of course the funny thing is it still pretty much animates better then all the other MMORPGs out there still. I do like alot of warhammers models, esp the dwarfs. WoW superdeforms their dwarf and gnome models a little bit to much.

Brub... WoW's cartoonish look goes back to warcraft3 which was even more cartoonish and is pretty much everything that warhammer is not.

inblack, in blizzards defense, WoW was one hell of a refinement. A little over 2 years of everquest they formed their beta, and from that point spent almost 2 years "refining" wow. Wow may not have been about alot of innovation, but it more then made up for it with vision. Leveling would not be about grinding, but questing. Loot would be plentiful. Downtime would be kept to a minimum (When I think back to the days where we needed to take med breaks to get mana back, I shake my head). No class would be overly complicated to solo with.

And anyone who thinks warhammer had any influence on wotlk is woefully kidding themselves. Wotlk has been on the drawing board for a while now and lake wintergrasp is simply another incarnation of a concept that blizz somewhat keeps failing at that started with world pvp that they wanted in the original wow. That concept grew from that, to AV, to the towers in silthus and plaguelands, to the zones in BC with pvp objectives.
