It amazes me that HL2:E1 wins 'best of the year' award time and again, when it was such a piece of shit game. A see-saw puzzle; long, boring dialogue; ho-hum shooting scenes; and bang, it's over. Wow. Sure deserves that award.

"Morality Police! Morality Police! Our view should be everyone's view!"
It's funny how any discussion of moral turpitude, responsibility, or growing up out of adolescence is greeted with this tiresome party-boy catcall. What a ridiculous world: people who are in favor of conducting yourself in a civil manner, having dignity, and living a responsible life are considered 'backwards' and 'antiquated' while asshats like you are the role models for kids. Back dat ass up! Back it up! Let's engage in simulated intercourse on the dance floor!

That spong article is perhaps the worst example of Internet 'journalism' I have ever seen. Do people even have to finish high school to get a job at these places anymore?
And as for the sex/age thing: of course there's going to far, and of course we have a far too permissive society. But you're fighting a losing battle. It's pretty much proven that the more perverse a society is, the more perverse it will become. We're already well down the path - just listen to top-40 music.

Re: 10 gadgets
Why has writing quality gone so far down the crapper? It's not as if WIRED was ever a great magazine, but it seems like every writer who gets shit out of some low-rent college in the modern era spits out the same crap:
"Never mind that the sound quality was crap or that the tapes had a maddening tendency to unravel, crease and break."
Bullshit. Tapes were great. Did they have hiss? Yes, but NOBODY NOTICED UNTIL NEW TECH WAS INTRODUCED WITHOUT HISS.
"... the idea of cooking dinner in a matter of minutes instead of hours caught on in harried suburbia."
Bullshit. 'Harried suburbia' is nonsense, and the writer obviously just wanted to use the words because he liked them. The suburban housewife of the 60's was not any more 'harried' by any means, and time has repeatedly illustrated that each 'time saving' device you buy actually causes you more stress, as you fill up any gained free time with more crap.
"Apple often gets credit for starting the personal computer revolution"
WTF? Clones were the primary and main cause of the PC revolution. The Apple IIE was usually found in institutions (like schools) rather than homes, whereas clones became popular in homes and thus helped revolutionize PERSONAL computing.

Why can't companies who push games back just say:
"Hey, some people are making a big deal out of us delaying our game. But you should know that release dates are JUST GUESSES. There's no way we can know when we start a game that we're going to finish it at some precise hour on some precise day. It's impossible. So we give a 'guess' day and we hit as close to that as we can. It happens all the time, it's happening again, it doesn't mean anything, let's all get back to our lives."
Probably for the same reason that nobody can just make a game anymore, they have to 'reinvent the genre'. Oh well.

"It's the core gameplay that sounds like it's merely competently derivative."
That's exactly what I don't get.
It's a FIRST PERSON SHOOTER.
Which means you SHOOT.
In FIRST PERSON.
This whole 'derivative' bullshit is such 'look at me, I'm so artsy!' nonsense. EVERYTHING IS DERIVATIVE. It's whether or not it introduces something NEW or EXCITING that makes a product worthwhile.
"Hey man, want to go to the Lakers game?" "Nah man that shit is so derivative! All they do is dribble the ball, then shoot it!"

But I guess that game isn't 'innovative', right?

"First, anyone with above-moron intelligence would realize that the main purpose of posting comments here is to comment directly on the referenced article not to go out on a tangent."
Thus, it logically follows that you have sub-moronic intelligence, as you are only posting to try to show me why I shouldn't be posting. Keep digging that hole.

Sexism my aching ball sack |

There is no sexism in MMORPGs. There are icons of adolescent sexuality, but they are used for both men and women. So why is it when some feminized, coiffed male gets his panties in a tissy because his womyn found something offensive, we have to suffer a long diatribe about how sexist and horrible the world is?
Games are marketed towards an adolescent mentality. Thus, they will contain adolescent imagery. The bikini armor, big tits, etc, are all part of that. Just like the bulging muscles, the one-liners, and the gratuitous violence.
Sexism my aching ball sack. This is why 'attracting more women' will destroy this industry.

MGS Sucks |

Jesus Christ, why are people still deluding themselves into thinking that MGS is actually a good game? 5 minutes of antiquated, boring 'gameplay' and 1 hour of a pre-rendered cutscene. That's innovative.
Please, Kojima, lecture us AGAIN about how horrible war is.
Yawn.

Well, I understand that this might be difficult for small brains to grasp, but the concept was SURVIVAL. And HORROR. Not 'you are the unstoppable action hero with a gagillion bullets'.
If creatively avoiding an obstacle rather than pumping it full of lead, puffing on your cigar, and crapping out a one-liner really bothers you, what were you doing playing Silent Hill anyway?

Are you people high? That Silent Hill trailer looks fucking pathetic. Not only did they PC-ify it by making the hero into a heroine, the trailer makes the entire storyline look like a stupid, boring rip-off of 'The Ring'. Fuck, 'Silent Hill' itself doesn't even look scary. What a waste of film. But I'm sure enough gullible people will go see it to justify a sequel. Kill me now.

I'm really, really tired of people jocking 'God of War'. What collective self-hypnosis occurred to make people think that PoS is actually a good game?
Tap the attack button to do a chain of automatic attacks against brain-dead AI. Push a box across a ship. Open a chest to get green or red glow-y crap. Repeat ad nauseum. Everybody only jocked it because it had stupid sex scenes and lots of blood. Big whoop.
Same applies to FEAR. Can't understand the raving about this boring, run-of-the-mill shooter either.
Game of the year is, undoubtedly, 'Resident Evil 4'. Too much cool stuff to even list. Runner-up, maybe - MAYBE - 'Shadow of the Colossus'. Sure it was repetitive, it got boring, it was repetitive, there was nothing to do except stab the Colossii ... and it was repetitive. But at least they tried something new.

Interesting. It appears that ve3d won't work with Firefox. When I attempt to connect to the site with Firefox it takes me to sorry.ign.com ... but IE works fine.

This is OT, but I can't find anything anywhere - does anyone know what happened to VoodooExtreme (ve3d.ign.com)? They've been down for days.

It is pretty funny how the fanboys get so pissed the minute anyone points out something stupid about the game they are creaming their pants over at the current moment. If you can't take criticism you're going to have a hard time in the real world. Which is probably why you seek shelter amongst other fanboys, all patting yourselves on the back.
Here's the thing: I'm sure you can write off many complainers as just agitators. But some of us are just tired of being spoonfed shit and being expected to call it ice cream. That you mooing, cud-chewing people could actually look at the marketing screenshot of F.E.A.R.'s 'scary little girl' and not have a problem with it being the exact same 'scary little girl' from 'The Ring' ... that just speaks volumes. Games are art! That's why the hack designers have to rip off crap sci-fi/horror movies!
I imagine you'll also be queueing up for 'The Mootrix' - you know, that 'original' new movie about the computer hacker who lives on a dairy farm. Complain about seeing the same crap over and over, then snap it up as soon as it hits the shelves. Complain about the death of gameplay, then spend hours on boards insisting that the Killzone 2 footage was real.
Proles.

'But what FEAR brings that's new is it does them ALL perfectly.'
And I don't get this either. When is technical competence the only requisite for acclaim? Was anyone throwing awards at that Mary Kate & Ashley movie just because they kept the boom out of shot, and no lights fell on the stars?
Certainly F.E.A.R. never crashed on me ... but it ran like crap on a top-of-the-line machine, the hit detection is poor, and the story is so derivative that we need a new word for it ... how about Islamofascistderivative?

"FEAR is one of the most original and exciting games to come out in a while, granted the story is somewhat ripped off"
Boy, that says it all right there doesn't it?
In other news, weren't you on RottenTomatoes talking about how original that Bad News Bears remake was? This time the kids say 'fuck' instead of 'shit'. Now THAT'S creativity!
Every time I hear some Hollywood reject game designer yarn on about how we're ushering in a new era of storytelling, I just look at the current crop of 'you are THE ONE' games on the market, sigh, and go back to enjoy games which are actually fun. Not these pretentious, poorly-implemented, obvious rip-off jobs. To each their own I guess.
