I'll agree with the War on Drugs, but the War on Terrorism? Last I checked, the US has not had an attack against the "homeland" since the formation of the Department of Homeland Security. (and the start of the rather poorly named "war on terror.")

I'd call that a pretty reasonable success.

Creston

Creston, I hope you are not serious about that. That is the dumbest argument I have ever heard. Oh, so the DHS has prevented terrorist attacks, huh? We have had ONE ever. Period. We had none before that, and none after.

That's like claiming... I don't know. I honestly cannot think of anything as stupid as what you just said.

Look at the list of people performing these shootings, most if not all of them were/are on medications and have mental disorders. So what's more rational, making knee jerk reactions calling for gun bans, rather than look at the symptoms of why these shootings are happening is like putting a bandaid on someone who's arm just got cut off with a chainsaw.

So what's your solution? Yes, most of them have been depressed and on medication. Obviously there's an issue there. Those that weren't on medication were likely just undiagnosed.

But what's your solution? How do you turn the knowledge that some depressed and medicated people buy guns and shoot up public places into stopping this from happening? Do you take the right to buy guns from these people? Well, it's a right, so that'd be difficult, the NRA would still oppose it, and many of them took guns someone else purchased, anyway. Do you lock these people up? Well, that seems easy to abuse and the vast majority of mentally ill people never go on murder sprees. Do you spend more on treatment? That doesn't help the undiagnosed, and I thought you opposed government spending? Our medical health institutions, which were fairly rotten to begin with, were all cut decades ago to decrease government spending.

What is your solution? There are only a few levers we're capable of pulling. Making acquiring guns more difficult seems to be a lever that would have an impact and is one we can easily pull. Can we get rid of all guns? No, and that'd be stupid, anyway. But can we make it more difficult for high capacity magazines to be acquired? Hell yeah.

Punish the innocent to absolve the sins of the guilty, eh?

You're missing the forest from the trees, a corrupt political faction in the US could push to become a totalitarian state, the only way they would succeed at that is to first strip US citizens of their guns. That's why the 2nd amendment is in place, to prevent that from ever happening.

And do you honestly think you, or any other cabal of armed insurrection, stand any sort of chance should the US decide to turn its current military power on its own citizens? Your pistols and shotguns against guys with M4s, body armor, drones, and cruise missiles. Let me know how that goes. Probably about as well as my last game of XCOM.

As much as I am with you on the heart and soul and purpose of the Second Amendment, one must also concede that it has been rendered obsolete by technological progress and economies of scale. We are already at the full mercy of this government, for better or worse.

The most dangerous people in America are these nutters like Alex Jones, which combine the fantasy of the Second Amendment in the modern age with the mental instability of rampant conspiracist thought.

Let's see, how did Vietnam work out for us? And Iraq, nobody is still fighting there, right? And Afghanistan, those guys are clearly surrendering, just like they did to the Soviets in the 80s.

For all our military might, we have been unable to win the war on drugs, the war on terrorism, and countless other actions. Sure, we could bomb the citizens into submission, but what would the ruling class rule then? Smoking wastelands? That wouldn't be much of a victory.

It is both overpriced and surprisingly cheap. The "photo" of Civilization V being played nearly gave me an erection but I still could't justify shelling out this sort of money while maintaining both a decent gaming desktop and a high-end phone as well.

I think my problem with tablet gaming is that there are few games I want to play in a semi-mobile state in that form factor. When you get up to a 10" screen I'd find myself just wanting a proper desktop or television instead. I'd rather use a 3DS for traveling gameplay or whatever and something else the rest of the time. This sort of thing is a neat idea but it doesn't seem to sit comfortably in either world.

QFT.

Like nobody saw this coming since release.

Sorry people, MMOs cannot succeed on the subscription model anymore. Those days are over, just like metered internet. Sure, there are some dinosaurs hanging on, and a couple of newer games hanging on by threads (Rift) but everyone was looking for WoW levels of success, not realizing that WoW was a massive outlier. The most successful MMO before WoW had a tiny fraction of the subs that WoW did, and most games can't even pull that.

Fired up FC3 just to see how the drivers affected performance. (From .70) Annnnnnnd....now the textures on the arm holding the firearms are flashing. Goodie.

Edit: Reset graphics settings and restarted, set to ultra again. Now it works. FPS much higher on .90 than .70.

Edit 2: Nope, if I fast travel the flashing textures come back, and on more than just my arm.

Fat, awkward, heavy, latency issues, etc. Why would I play on a tiny screen when I don't have to? Why would I want a controller in the first place when I don't need one for 99.9% of games? How soon will it be incompatible with newer Nvidia stuff? Probably inside a week to force people in the upgrade cycle. No thanks!

Yeah, I don't get it. If I want to play a game like AC3 with a controller, I will A) Hook up my wireless 360 controller to my PC to play it on my 27" monitor or B) Play it on my PS3 on my 46" TV.

At no point while I am at home do I want to play a game with great graphics on a screen the size of my cell phone. Hell, I wish my Vita did video out to my TV.

On the go? Yeah, at least my Vita has Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, and Lego Lord of the Rings. I don't want to play some crap Android game, and this is certainly not going to stream my PC games while I am in a train or on the road.

I just realized, by the time this game is released, my PC will be 3 years old...
It's sad that I've had to wait this long for a PC game that will finally tap the potential of my aging i7-980x system.

Try the new Hitman.

I thought the world was over this morning when I woke up and my internet connection was out. I couldn't check Steam's store page, so I grabbed my netbook and left home early. I saw a work truck from the cable co. down the street from my house, so I figured they'd have it back on by the time I got home. I drove to a McDonald's and sat in the parking lot using their free wifi to check Steam. I didn't miss anything and there was over 4 hours until the next set of flash deals rolled over.

When I got home this evening it was still out. I called the cable co. and they said they were aware of the problem and crews were in the area working on it. I ate a snack and watched something that was recorded. I was about to pack up my netbook and head back to McDonalds when a few minutes ago when it finally came back up. It must have been something serious for it to be out so long.

Around this same time (Steam winter sale) the last two years my connection was constantly cutting off and on several times a day. I'm wondering if my ISP is doing this on purpose.

Thanks for the reminder. Just picked up Hitman on sale. Whee! Happy Christmas to me!

My store line is VOIP and it's more reliable than the phone service in that town. I've not had it go down yet. The trick is to have a nice UPS so when the power goes off for a couple of hours you still have phone service.

Wow, I beta tested AC2 almost from the start. Didn't play too long in release, most likely because I burnt out from testing it so long. Had some cool features. Weird that they are bringing it back, even as FTP, after so long.

One for each faction, not for each race. Thanks for being Literal Larry, though.

I am a comic book/superhero movie fanboy. It is just how I am wired. I even liked Daredevil and the Punisher movies.

So why am I finding myself to be so skeptical about the Superman movie? I loved Watchmen and the The Dark Knight trilogy...so it isn't the powers that be. The actors seem to be well cast.

The trailer just leaves me with feelings of inexplicable doom however. Hopefully it isn't as bad as my gut seems to be saying. Particularly since they have made the decision to make a Justice League movie next rather then first making more movies about the members.

I can't watch a Superman movie without John Williams.

I feel bad for Trion, they made a great MMO but it came after six years of WoW and most people are burned out.

They made a generic clone without multiple starting areas, and added "dynamic" events. Oooh, the art is different. The best thing they could do for their game is go FtP. I think it's been pretty much proven that subscription games don't really work out too well unless your name is Blizzard. I'm actually surprised that Trion had held on to that model as long as they have.

Not sure if it's still valid but here you go: http://www.thesecretworld.com/news/play_the_trial_now

Thanks for that, I do not know why so many MMOs refuse trials when they launch.
Star Wars did that initially as well and I really wanted to try it but I'm not gonna commit money to an MMO until I have tried it.

Will try out Secret World now

They refuse to release trials when they launch because they know a large percentage of people can't wait 5 seconds for a cup of coffee, let alone a year for a trial. Those people end up buying the game and then they have their money, whether or not the end up playing longer.

Those people dwindle off after six months or a year, and then the game releases a trial to get more players.

BTW, GW2 just had a trial period in November. You had to be invited by a current player.
