1. The cops are tracking my car—and yours. Jul 18, 2013, 12:37 LittleMe

That's why I'm a member of the ACLU. But what does privacy mean? Is it private to be in a public place and drive your car? What are the expectations? It becomes more difficult with how much freedom you have in public. What do folks define their privacy as?

There's a big difference between 'expectations of privacy' and 'dragnet surveillance.' Wait, it isn't a privacy issue at all, to me. It's one of our inalienable human rights being respected. So when he lumps it into the 'privacy' category he's creating a straw man argument.

This is NOT a privacy issue. It's about our forth amendment rights being violated. Perhaps they should not retain any data that isn't directly relevant to an open case involving specific LP's.

1. Windows Monopoly Is Getting Destroyed. Jul 18, 2013, 11:28 LittleMe

I like how they say the monopoly wasn't overcome by regulations but rather the much more powerful market. So true. But the phone market will mature more quickly, imo, and none of the other devices can truly replace a PC.

A risk here is that MS will start to believe misleading charts like the one in the article and lump Windows in the same category as phone and tablets (Win 8). I can see why they want the money, but a real traditional desktop still has a lot of value.

Yeah if everyone did this it would be an inconvenience, to say the least. End to end encryption would help more, but that would be even more inconvenient. Why is no one talking about the large cash-producing feeding tube that keeps the NS.A afloat? The fed and their money printing presses? That is closer to the root cause of our woes.

Yes, it comes across as cheap. They should consider offering compensation equal to the amount of value it adds to the business. Money talks... The suits should understand this.

Many manufacturing lines follow this practice where employees who are 'on the line' have better ideas since they are the ones with the most experience.

It's sort of like a brave new world; the new technology is sort of scary," said Page Bowden, a parent of a student at Winthrop University's on-campus nursery school. "But when you stop to actually think about it, and think about the level of security that [it] affords you as a parent and your children, it's worth it."

Double think!

Well they were a lot more 'open and complete' with the feds! Do they think their relationship with them is more important than with their customers?

Jivaro's got the right of it. If MS flops and Sony has no competition, then you'll see the same restrictions show up on the PS4, but you'll have nowhere to turn. We need multiple competitive elements in gaming. Competition pushes down prices and pushes up quality. Lack of competition does the opposite.

I just want to see MS focus more on PC. Well, PC as a all-encompasing platform that includes gaming. But yes, competition in the console arena is important. I can't see why MS is so corrosive of the PC when it comes to gaming. They make a shit ton of money off Windows. I view it as being overly greedy, or self destructive greediness (ie. ruining a good thing (tm)).

What big corporate Internet business -isn't- helping them spy on us, and which ones are most zealous about it?

Who was naive about their freedoms and privacy while the feds systematically violated the Constitution using loopholes based on the sort of fear mongering we were all warned about over two centuries ago? How convenient (to them) it all looks.

tl;dr: Sad truth is that companies aren't going to do right by consumers in a lot of areas unless they're made to.

That's the role of the consumer to regulate the corporation through choice and competition! Local governments have outlawed competition! Consumers are breaking the law if they try to lay their own fiber or cable lines because the government partnered with the corporation to outlaw this practice! The whole system is broken. You CAN'T fix it by changing a few rules here and there. It is garbage. Today I took the garbage out from the kitchen and put it on the curb. I want to do the exact same thing with the duopoly.

PropheT I read your post but I just don't see it that way. Your foregone conclusion that suburban and rural areas can only have Internet is if a duopoly/monopoly is in place is, to me, wrong. The premise that you present is that people can't solve problems without socialist/collectivist big brother. I believe that yours is exactly the sort of thinking that keeps us in this rut. Big brother IS the problem.

It seems to me we need to develop a legal framework that can allow people and communities to solve these physical connectivity issues by themselves, organically. The framework would allow people and communities to wire themselves and organize spontaneously on an as-needed basis. The framework would need to evolve and improve over time. People solving their own problems seems chaotic. That's the point. The real world needs a flexible and and dynamic solution, not a monolithic corporate socialist nightmare.

This is the ideal role of government. The current monolithic framework has provided mediocre results (the duopoly).

He's doing his own Hunger Games. He just wants to save his skin. Simple as that. He has become a beacon of hope for us. He will die in the right way, at the right time. They don't have to destroy him, just his image.

Unfortunately too many people don't even understand what 'republic' means. They probably think it has something to do with the Republican party.

From what I gather, most people think that the government is allowed to do whatever it wants as long as they agree with it. "Rule of Whim" , not rule of law.

Thanks Blue.

Once the cableco's and telco's conspire like this it's a defacto monopoly, at least as far as the consumer is concerned (imo).

One user comment made me lol, complaining that regulation was needed. He/she is forgetting that regulation is exactly what got us into this mess. The duopoly IS market regulation.

Yeah R* and MS/Sony would be crazy not to have it on next gen consoles. At that point the porting to PC is almost done, unless they port to PC first then the next-gens. I'd say the likelihood of PC vers is strong in this one.
