ESRB & Game Code |
Jul 20, 2005, 23:47 |

There is no way that the ESRB will ever start tackling looking at game code, way, WAY too expensive. Well... maybe if America funneled some money away from the war on Iraq (25,000 innocent Iraqi civilians dead to date by the way) they could start affording to look at game code...
The fact of the matter is, if a game company wants to sneak something past the ESRB they could do it, problem is in the long run it could come and bite them in the ass (like what is happening with GTA, mind you the exposure is probably worth more then the cost of the repurcussions).

I'm glad I live in Canada...
This is up there with the Janet Jackson nipple incident.
Here in Canada, last week, you should have seen the opening of the World Aquatic Championships in Montreal. Live TV, Cirque du Soleil doing the opening ceremonies... and for part of the show there was this contortionist in a skimpy outfit dancing in and around this big wine glass full of water. About halfway through the performance her nipple had worked it's way out of the outfit and remained poking out of her outfit for second half of her performance.
Was the performance stopped?
No.
Were the cameras turned away?
No.
Was it mentioned by the announcers?
No.
Did they sensor the replayed, taped footage that was aired three hours later on the west coast?
No.
Was it mentioned once by a politician or a journalist?
No.
Exactly the way it should have been handled.
America needs to seriously rethink their values. Get a grip on reality... I'm glad that everyone here seems to be on the same page on this one. If you live in the States, please do the world a favour and talk out against this crap as often and vocally as possible. Hopefully if enough of you start talking up against this crap it'll turn your country back around.
Shoot off someones head, Mature... no biggie.
Show fully clothed sex as a joke, Adults Only, product taken off store shelves & morality in America is coming to an evile demise.
GET A GRIP!!!!!!!!!
America has some crazy right wing, wing nut placed into power in the supreme court, the very same day Canada makes it legal for gays to get married across the country.
DAMN I LOVE MY COUNTRY!
Liberty and freedom in the states? My ass... every time you guys here Bushy say those words you should all cringe with digust and contempt for him. This comment was edited on Jul 20, 23:35. |

Hasn't Slitherine learnt their lesson? They probably didn't see a dime from SFI on their last game (or two?) that SFI published for them here in North America. (just like a half a dozen or more other game developers)
Why would they go back to SFI? damn.... best of luck Sliterine, though I'm not so sure you deserve luck for being stupid enough to go back to Strategy First again...

I work in the game industry and I have many friends spattered throughout the industry that work at key game development studios.
PS3 dev kits are VERY hard to come by, there are VERY few of them out there. Nintendo Revolution Dev Kit are no where to be found. Unless Nintendo plans on making all the games for it's next console on its own and is keeping all the kits to itself, then the revolution isn't coming out any time soon. Believe a link to some story on the internet if you want, I'm trying to say "don't believe the hype" because those that have first hand insight (outside of all of the people that work for Microsoft, Sony & Nintendo that are trying to make you believe their hype(erbole?)) will tell you completely differently.
And to the guy that said you can make a game without the DevKit... hooey...
I'd bet every penny I had, if I could, that there will be no PS3 next spring and that we'd be lucky to see it by Christmas next year. Nintendo... even further out.
Viva la Xbox 360, at least that's legit. This comment was edited on Jul 17, 15:31. |

Playstation 3 and Nintendo Revolution |

News flash, the PS3 and Nintendo Revolution won't be coming out any time soon. There are barely any PS3 dev kits out there. It's crazy for Sony to say that their system will be coming out early next year, it's just not possible, there are few games truly in development for that system at this point. I think we'll be lucky to see the PS3 hit store shelves before next Christmas.
As for the Nintendo Revoltion, there are absolutely no dev kits out there to speak off there isn't a single game being made for the Revolution at this point... (perhaps Nintendo has a few in the works). I don't think this will see the light of day till after next years Christmas... it's probably about 18 months out.

You can't cancel out of the BF2 installation when it's trying to instal DX 9.0C?!?!? WTF... it stopped the ENTIRE installation and made me start from scratch. I already have 9.0c on my system, why reinstal the damn thing? Why cacel the ENTIRE installation... damn, that is annoying.

Best Server Browser EVAR |

Surprised no one else has brought this up... Unreal Tournament, it in my opinion, had the best server browser ever. That game had the best menu system ever too. It was kinda lame in the sense that it looked like windows, but it did the job VERY effectively.
I'm pretty bummed by how slow BF2's menu is to pop up as well. Why does it take 5-10 seconds to have the menu pop up after I push esc? (normally pushed by accident)

Part of the rational of not including a number in a game title is to differentiate a true sequel from a game that is simply "inspired by" an older game. (read "piggybacking or milking of a proven ip")
Doom 3 was obviously a sequel of Doom 2, same universe, same gameplay. Ghost Recon: AW is going to be different from Ghost Recon 2 and the original (set in a different environment, different gameplay mechanics etc), hence the lack of sequel number.

Great, yet another bluesnewws reader saying stupid shit before the thinks.
BF2 was supposed to ship months ago... I can't remember the last date that I heard but I think it was like February. They gave the dev team almost another half year to polish up and finish the game.
Developers can't be given free reign to take as much time as is needed to finish the game. There is most certainly a chunk of blame that should fall on Dice's shoulders here as well.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/06/15/news_6127568.html ___________________________________________________ Nintendo brand scores among kids Survey nets keepers of Mario and Mickey top slots in brand awareness race among young kids, teens.
When asked to finger the "coolest" brands, children ages 8 to 12 ranked Nintendo first, followed by Disney, McDonald's, Nike, and Hummer, researchers Decision Analyst and Hypothesis said in a recent statement outlining their "Hot or Not?" survey. As the survey pool switched to older consumers, ages 13 to 17, Nintendo slipped to the fifth slot behind (in order from number one) Nike, Hummer, Abercrombie, and Sony. Those that owned the bottom of the coolest-brand lineups were Toyota, Volkswagen, Levi's, Dell, Ford, and Starbucks for the younger group, while Ford, Levi's, Burger King, Volkswagen, and Toyota owned the cellar for the 13- to 17-year-old age group. The survey was conducted in May 2005, and tapped the opinions of 670 children and teens between the ages of 8 and 17. ___________________________________________________
So SFI is putting out two strategy titles aimed at the older crowd on a platform that apeals the most to the 8-12 year old demographic. NICE!

The problem is I think that all us exSFIers are still in therapy for all the bad/dumb shit that we saw going there. It's not the easiest thing to block a fat, balding, dumb as shit man who is the Norm! of strip clubs out of your mind. Heck, I witnessed this guy asking his secretary to hike up her skirt... the scary part... SHE DID....

...the last one was really entertaining and brought back many "fond" memories...
Hmmmm, let's look at the business sense behind this latest decision. Let's publish strategy games that were geared for hardcore strategy game fans (i.e. older demographic), that were released on PC multiple years ago and port them onto a hand held device that is skued to the yongest possible demographic in the gaming industry. Smart, real smart. The series of bad decisions that that company is making continues....

Ubisoft isn't just a publisher. It also has a large number of in house developers as well. They have a development studio in Montreal that is only second in size to EA's office here in Vancouver. Ubi has about 1000-1200 employees in Montreal that have worked on games like Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia among others. They are currently working on King Kong and Far Cry Instincts in house... as well as the next Splinter Cell I would imagine.

That SAM video is actually really well done. It brought a smile to my face with the talking bomb... nice marketing touch.
Seems like Croteam is mixing it up a bit more in this game and adding a lot of ambient NPC's to the game. Should be interesting.

For example, if we had an interface where we could control applications using gestures and words using the EyeToy, it would be like Minority Report.
Since when was it a good idea to try and imitate shit made up in movies? I don't see how this would be any fun for photo or video editing or any other type of computer application.
Maybe I'm just being cynical, but I think these guys need to start thinking back inside the box.
