Eventually 'hardcore PC gamers' will whine themselves out of the market and the hobby itself.

Watch them put stuff in your game that you can't unlock with the amount of points you can earn in your game, thereby almost forcing you to buy another game just so you can play everything in the first game.

Except you can get enough points to unlock everything for a game by playing that game itself. You'll get more than you want to use actually, unless you think unlocking stuff like low res wallpapers is important in some way.

Ignoring the retardery of their entire DRM scheme for the moment, but now you have to unlock entire game modes??

Wtf ever happened to buying a game and just being to play everything right from the start? Why does everything have to be an MMO grind nowadays?

Creston

You don't have to do anything special or annoying to unlock the game mode. Just play the game normally and you can unlock it without having to 'grind' it.

Uplay is a neat idea although I suppose the argument can be made that all the extra content should be included in the game from the get go. Still, it's not like they charge extra for it, and one will necessarily unlock them while playing through the game normally so no harm done. It will be interesting to see what other features they will roll out for it over time.

News Comments > Ubisoft: DRM "Vital" To PC Success

Really? Vital? And how come this DRM isn't vital to companies like StarDock and yet they are selling games well with no DRM???

Because Stardock games cost 20-50 times less to make and subsequently the sales required (and obtained) are significantly less? Half a million sales of a game is a success for Stardock. Half a million sales for the high budget games would result in the studio being shutdown and the employees being fired.

Yea, I completed AC2 as well (27 hours) and the DRM system worked flawlessly for me. People like to complain too much.

Is this going to be paid DLC? If so, I wonder what they would charge for it.

though no dollar figures for the game's initial marketing budget are supplied.

I believe the development cost for MW2 was $50 million and it was supported by a $200 million dollar marketing and advertising budget. It worked out well for Activision though... they earned back $550 million dollars in revenues inside the first week of the release.

I was looking into this but at the stage where you need to link your Steam account, it actually asks you to login to your Steam account in a frame inside the main page. I'm sure it's perfectly legit, but it kind of feels a little weird to enter my Steam credentials on a 3rd party site. Am I being paranoid here?

Verno wrote on Apr 1, 2010, 09:54:
No. It is because they don't want it potentially pirated during console sales.

This sounds like a plausible reason but a) their DRM is uncracked at the moment, so piracy shouldn't really be a concern right now and b) is 2 weeks really enough to protect console sales? Companies like Capcom delay their pc games by 6 months to protect their sales.

A 2 week delay is really quite short. Given that developers work in crunch mode right at the end combined with the fact that the PC version is worked on last (after the console versions have gone for certification), it really is possible they couldn't meet their deadlines. Better than releasing it unfinished I suppose, although it's possible that still might happen anyway

Yea I bought AC2 as well and I've had absolutely no problems with the DRM either. And it is a fabulous game to boot. One of the best made in recent times. As usual, people are blowing this DRM thing out of proportion.

The free 'map pack' where they basically reconfigured existing maps to work with other game modes? I think DICE have spent more time and effort hyping up their free 'map pack' than they did actually working on making those minor changes.

This is interesting. I knew that their forums exploded in disappointment after yesterday's announcement but I didn't expect the scale to be large enough to send the founder of Bioware into damage control mode.

Kotaku is reporting that AC2 players also got emails offering free games and the black edition DLC to affected players. I suppose this is in addition to the Uplay points they had given out earlier. Decent enough gesture from Ubisoft I suppose, especially for a few hours of downtime. Bad company 2 has a far worse track record at this point in time but I doubt they'll be doing anything to placate affected customers.
