Bring on the heat and sunshine!

Fuck that! It's getting close to 90 here this week...

Dude, we're freezing our nads off up here. It's been 10+ degrees below seasonal for 2 or 3 weeks now. *grumble mumble*

We've had freeze watches here in Mass for the last week, which is rather unusual for this time of year. What's really got me going is that it was 70+ in March, and yet at the end of April I'm damn near getting frostbite every time I go for a bike ride. I had to stop checking the weather last week, it was too depressing.

That one week in March was great... Other than all the 'O M G, Global Warming!!!' crap... But I knew winter wasn't done with us...

Having just bought a house, and setting up my office in the basement, I've been quite cold... Waiting on summer and the (lack of) need for central A/C to decide on what to do... I hate wearing pants/socks at home...

Not to troll or anything, but what are some examples of quests that you'd like to see in an MMO that don't fit the Kill X/Collect Y molds ? Seems like at the high level most things would fit into that.

Bombing runs... heh... They were so cool when first added... Now they're just part of the norm...

As for GW2, one of the neatest quests I did was a snowball fight with a bunch of kid NPCs running around... Good to practice the double-tap-dodge (which I'm actually fine with, as I played a lot of UT back in the day).

So much disappointment in one little weekend...

I'm going to ignore all the beta issues, such as instances not working properly (fighting 6 mobs and getting owned, because the companion that was supposed to be helping, isn't), because it urges too many trolls (or are they fan boys?) to say, 'it's just beta, it'll be perfect on release'... or some shit : )

'Action' combat system... My ass... The combat felt no different than any other massive... You select a target, turn on your auto attack (make sure you're in range), and occasionally hit one of your other very limited (number of, that is) abilities...

Movement to dodge projectiles? I remember them showing centaurs firing arrows and players dodging them years ago... Where did that go? Or maybe the magic ballista I was testing against works differently, but if I'm far right, and it shoots, and I move far left, with the projectile following me, where's the difference from every-other-game? Now, doing an arbitrary dodge (double tap) in this scenario gives me an 'evaded' message, so maybe that's the 'action combat' they have?

I said it many times, but I was still so very disappointed to be doing the exact same kill/fed-ex/collect quests as every-other-game, but this time, without knowing how many iterations are needed (how is that an improvement?).

And now, my major beef... Attempting to play with (in the same area as) the wife was an exercise in futility... They copied the functionality from City of Heroes (and the like), which is 10 year old technology, and they can't do it half as well? Here's how the game is designed... When you go into an area, like say, Wayfarer Hills (early Norn area), and it's full, you get put into an arbitrary overflow 'queue' (fancy way of saying, a copy of the zone, so that you're not stuck not playing)... That part is good/fine... But since you can't swap to another arbitrary overflow zone, and the person you're grouped with, also gets thrown into a random one, you either have to get extremely lucky, or wait the hour (sometimes shorter, usually much longer, at least during peak) to be able to get into the same zone.

Now, I understand that it's possible the designers never had 3 copies of zone (2 overflow queues), so they just didn't see this issue come up, but holy crap what an annoying oversight... In a game that's constantly lauded as everyone else you're playing with being co-operative (not competitive for tags, kills, loots, etc)...

So in conclusion, it's just another 'WoW clone', or more accurately, just another mmo... For me, I'm mostly ok with that with other games, because they add their advancements to the genre (even if other companies don't 'learn' from them - more massives need sidekicking), but GW2 claimed to be so much more, and like being over-hyped with a movie (Blair Witch... I waited 2 hours for 'the scary part', and the only emotion it evoked in me, was the desire to go camping), it was a huge let-down.

So while I haven't mentioned anything that is beta specific, I do understand that one of these things can be 'fixed' before release, and I sure as hell hope they do... Not being able to play with friends in a massive, is just beyond ridiculous... I was hoping I just kept missing some obscure setting/option, and that' still possible, but the UI is so minimal in this regard, that's hard to believe (plus, it really should be in two obvious places - party window and map).

C'mon, you know as well as I do, people pile on EA for Origin related stuff all the time, or the whole "I'll only buy it on steam!" bullshit. Because you know running a desktop icon to start a game is so radically different depending on which DD service you bought it from.

Yet Blizzard can essentially do the same thing and everyone is fine with it. Don't give me that cop out crap.

Or threaten to boycott Ubisoft for DRM, yet Blizzard does it, and goes one further by including a real money auction house that they get a cut off of, when anyone with half a brain knows D3 will have the same duped items economy 1 and 2 did, and hey no problem mon!

If that isn't hypocritical I'm not sure what is.

I have no interest in Origin, and for the most part, don't buy digital games if they're not on Steam...

I also don't generally support Ubi's DRM games, but am happily going to play D3, single player (most of the time). I also disagree about your duping expectations, but don't worry, I won't say 'it won't happen'; I just don't think it'll be that bad.

I also disagree that it's 'the same thing'... I also realize that decisions are extremely rarely made for one reason, but everyone always argues the one (and only) reason... Blizzard made a design decision, years ago, to have an online only game, and while money is likely the single largest reason, it's not the reason. And if you disagree, that's cool, but it doesn't make people who feel differently (even if their opinions can vary about different products/services) hypocrits for feeling differently : )

See, the point I'm making, beyond this not being hypocrisy, is that I'm a person, that could be a hypocrit, but calling the whole community (whether it's gamers, or just Bluesnewsians) hypocritical is just... hypocritical : )

Plus really, where's the line between hypocrisy and changing one's opinions?

These beer goggles need less beer!

Blizzard is doing the exact same thing as EA, can't believe I am seeing doublethink here on bluesnews. B.Net is an entire digital distribution system, with RMT and digital purchases. That is *exactly* why the game isn't on Steam or any other digital distributor (unlike Origin games, by the way)

So Blizzard is actually even WORSE than EA. At least EA gives you the option who manhandles you, Blizzard just does it wholesale.

Yes but it's only trendy to hate EA and not Valve or BlizzActivison of all things. It's funny the hate Activision gets in a COD thread or a Guitar Hero thread, but when it's Blizzard "we take a decade a game due to lack of project management and can do no wrong" Restrictions like always on DRM (See Ubisoft hate) Or limiting online distro to just themselves (See EA/Origin hate) its somehow ok and different. Like I've said a few times, gamers are the most hypocritical bunch of douches period.

That last line kind of sums up your problem though...

'Gamers' is a community, and any one topic in that community, it has an opinion (as a whole, which we'll just say is the statistical superior), so anyone going against that opinion is a hypocrit (or as seen on this site for ages, a douche, idiot, fan boy, 'hater', etc).

In short... Groups aren't hypocritical, unless they're sheep or lemmings... People are... : )

Plus, as humans, we're all hyporcrits, so it's kind of moot.

Purdy, but will hold judgement until release, and then not really care unless the game is also fun : )

The unique game mechanic in Reset is the ability to travel back in time to solve puzzles co-operatively, with yourself.

This sounds interesting... Though could end up not all that different than say, Raziel's (Kain series) light/dark puzzle dynamic (which is fine, I liked the game(s)).

As much as I'm not on the Valve loving, or Portal game/series playing bandwagon(s), I think this is cool...

Interesting though, that free DLC in this day and age sparks a happy vibe, when it used to be that the price of a game would give you all the updates free for a year or two, and THEN there might be an expansion with a good deal of new content...

Am I going to enjoy a game that has a childish atmosphere to it? Childish cinematics, childish voice acting, and childish stories/quests? Probably not.

Someone is going to have to do convince me. Tell me I'm wrong. Someone who's played the beta.

You would have to define how you think something is childish for someone else, with a different definition, to be able to convince you otherwise...

I don't think TL or TL2 look childish at all... Cartoonish, yes, but cartoons were always made for parents, so who knows what you could mean : )

Indeed... They would certainly have gotten more full price sales... But those that enjoyed the first, will buy the second (on a Steam sale when they take a break from D3).

This is a great example of how piracy generates revenue; many many people who pirate a product will buy a sequel. Which incidentally, is also why Windows is THE operating system of choice : )

Can you name one software package (game or otherwise) shipped in the last decade that was not 'so full of bugs'? : )

Personally, however, I haven't dealt with any bugs in D3 for months... Doesn't mean they're not there, and I steered clear of the stress weekend, but peeps constantly bitch about every single game not being ready at launch; moreso for massives, because there is always a lot of people playing it before launch.

I would call D3 ready, though perhaps not the infrastructure, near launch, but that's ok, because I'll just load it up in single player mode ; )

Would be curious to see if Bettle.net will be able to handle all the load.

That's my concern as well. I've debated a lot whether to take the 15th off work, and decided to do it anyways for shits and giggles. If nothing else, I'll catch up on Legend of Grimlock and a couple other games if B.net happens to be down. Or should I say "when it's down" as Im sure it will be a few times in the first day or two while they fix things.

Here's the thing I don't get, they've been running Battle.net for going on 15+ years now, they know how many preorders they have, they know going on Brand name that they could shit in a box and it'll sell millions. (why I don't know but that's a totally different dead horse we've beaten to death already)

How they can't prepare for that with the numbers and their past experience running Battle.net and WoW I can't understand. Spend the money, put the proper amount of servers and back end in place, and ramp it up if need be.

There's a widely known belief, and even a famous saying, about how you can't always just throw money at a problem to get a solution...

Plus, there's the reality of money... As one person put it; it's not worth it for Blizzard to handle the full influx... They know people are going to put up with it... There will be complaints, raging, etc... Then the demand will settle down, and all the money they saved on hardware/bandwidth they no longer need, will instead go to the CEO : )

Forget all this type, and discussion. The REAL QUESTION IS Is it going to be another shitty grind again? Do I have to really need to spend hours and hours travelling, killing wolves, and shit? It's F2P, so why make us grind? If you want us to be good at our character, then just put a training system in the game. Fuck.

At least making the levelling process only take 20 hours to do. Not 200 hours. Not 100, not 50.

Seriously...

Please take your long-drawn-out lore/questing/grind system and kindly shove it up your ass.

Why make us sink all our time into your game without us knowing yet whether it's worth it or not for us to sink our time into it in the first place.

You think you can make us grind shit again? Nope. People have already had their fill of that shit from WoW--if not EQ--if not any of the other 10 MMOs that have come out, and we're sick of it.

There's very little in the way of gear treadmill, the leveling curve is pretty much flat, and you can right off the bat make max level geared out characters for structured PVP. The reason why so many people are optimistic about this game is because we're sick of all the traditional MMO shit, and GW2 has the potential to change that.

'flat levelling curve' doesn't mean it doesn't take 200 hours to hit max... It just means each level takes about the same amount of time...

The real counter to 'having to grind' to max level, for GW2, is that there is no end game... But the counter that, is that there is stuff that requires level, like the 'hard mode' dungeons... Which just goes back to support that there's a grind to get to max level to see this content...

Though, regardless of which game it is, seeing new content (which includes quests/lore while levelling) is a large part of the game... If not for that stuff, people would be complaining that it's too short. If you don't enjoy playing a game, will you enjoy playing a game at max level?

An MMO, that doesn't even charge a monthly subscription, offers ways of transferring your character to another place, and it's dumb? Jeez, one of the major complaints of most MMO players is that they can't transfer a character and GW2 will have it at/near launch, sounds "smart" to me.

It's just too bad it's not what they claimed early on, but I understand the desire for balance... at least for balancing casual players; dedicated players in other games transfer across servers all the time for various reasons, including pvp imbalance (to get away from or to generate)...

Looks more like the shoot/blow everything up that all the lil kiddies (ie: the current target audience for pubs/devs...) like nowadays...

Would be great to hear more "Die Mr Yankee Zankee..." comments from human opponents AI in Crysis 3...

I thought the 'lil kiddies' were the ones keeping Call of Dooty and Modern Borefare up in the top 10? The community really needs to make up it's mind...

Btw, I haven't played any of the CoD/MW variants, but I like the word Dooty...

Best way I can see them making this game better, instead of going a bit more downhill, would be if the dome is the whole level. IE no loads or cuts from one side to another. If they could or even tried to pull that off I think the people that dispised the 2nd game might shut up a bit.

I was never a big fan of this feature in say, GTA, or some other boring games, but I really enjoyed it in Prototype (and some others you could fly/glide)... Running from one end of the city to the other can be fun... Though I'd rather queue for a random dungeon... anyhow...

I guess, for me, part of the fun in travelling in prototype (other than the aforementioned 'flying'), is crushing and throwing cars as I go... : )

Agreed, it's diablo 2 all over again with slightly better graphics and an auction house with people trying to sell mundane white items for 500k gold.

Not only that but no longer can you build a character with stats, that's removed, and skills are unlocked for you as you go along, limited to a couple damage skills active at once? So much for skill trees and different builds. No lets just streamline it down so the masses of below level intelligence won't have to work for a decent set up.

Why does anyone still give a fuck about Blizzard? I just fail to understand.
