| Does spore mark the last of good PC games? Yes, they are going to make a console version, pretty much what they can fit of the PC game on it, but it was developed primarily for the PC. |

Oblivion is exactly why I don't have high hopes for this game.
Now now. I'm sure it will be pretty. And simple enough to keep even the slowest of fourteen year old consolers from getting confused. |

Bugs have always been the achilles heel of the Gothic series. Gothic 3 was an unfinished, buggy mess.
Get rid of the bugs and you have a series that easily stands along side the Elder Scrolls series, if not better. |

Personally I find the criticism of Oblivion to be very strange because I found it to be such an exceptional game but then I also find a lot of the criticism of Team Fortress 2 equally weird. I think some people just go in with unrealistic expectations and want to simply pick games apart.
Odd, I thought my expectations were perfectly reasonable. Make a game that was at least as good as it's predecessors, and had at least as much content like skills, weapons, spells, etc...as its predecessor. Or gasp.....even build on it's predecessor and have even more.
Instead they settled for less, and instead chose to make it pretty and dumb it down to appeal to the lowest common denominator. |

As a PC-only enthusiast (don't own a console nor will I) who loved Morrowind, I thought Oblivion to be superior to Morrowind in just about every conceivable way (save the atrocious level scaling, which was modded out).
I couldn't disagree more. Oblivion had superior graphics and more arcade style combat, but in just about every other way it was a dumbed down and inferior product to Morrowind. It's story line was cheesier, it had less skills, less weapons, less spell effects, and absolutely no reason to actually explore the world since that chest in your basement would have the same random loot as the chest in the bottom of a dungeon.
Morrowind had all its initial items handplaced, which meant there was reason to venture out and explore. There were things to find, like that nice ring in the tomb near Seyda Neen early in the game. And the towns were better DESPITE not having the ever so awesome "radiant AI". It's funny how the town of Balmora had more buildings than all of the "cities" in the Empire home country except the imperial city itself.....and even that was really divided into different sections. And you could go in all the houses and towers in Balmora. Furthermore, in Morrowind every charactor was hand placed and had names....from villagers to bandits to farmers to smugglers.....none of this "bandit" bs. You actually felt like you were in a world where people lived. And it's funny how you could actually do more things in the older game than you could in it's prettier successor......flying, fighting with spears, throwing knives, the jump spell. But hey, you got a magic compass in Oblivion to help all the morons on the Xbox who complained because they couldn't follow simple directions and find the spy masters house in Morrowind.
Oh, and don't even get me started on the GUI. Dear god was that ever an awful step backwards from the resizable and moveable windows of Morrowind.

....just the fact that so many people on forums like these are willing to defend piracy, or somehow claim it's the developers fault, is reason enough for developers to start fleeing the platform. It's simply not in their interest to remain.
And thats sad, because cross platform games are inferior to true PC games. |

...one of the main things killing PC gaming is the lack of PC games. I don't consider "cross platform" games to be PC games.
Having said that, I think Microsoft has a lot of blood on their hands when it comes to PC gaming. |

And yes, I know, some curmudgeon will come in here and say those games sucked, but your opinion doesn't erase the opinion of millions of happy gamers who bought those games.
Yeah, Bethesda is pretty much becoming the McDonalds of the gaming business. Well packaged, dumbed down, pretty products that are designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Each game getting more "mainstream" and "simpler" than the last.
Of course, I wouldn't call McDonalds good food no matter how popular it is. |

...same old Bethesda bullshit. They could have easily made a demo for Oblivion by simply putting in the charactor generator dungeon. But then they didn't want people to see the reality as opposed to the hype until the product was on the shelves.
In many ways they are rather lazy developers. Each iteration of their games have less skills, powers, options, etc....as they focus more on graphics and dumbing things down for the console crowds. |

It means either one of two things either the developers are lying or the developers are intentionally not optimizing the PC version.
This is Bethesda we are talking about here, and probably Pete Hines. Lying and misleading is part of what they do. Usually in an effort to keep PC players in the dark about how much they have dumbed down their current product over it's predecessor.
Remember all the tall tales about "Radiant AI"? Remember all the screenshots carefully taken not to show landscapes at that medium range where the textures would suddenly blur out and get all ugly? |
