Really loved the first one done by Raven. Bought their second one and played it for about 30 minutes before putting it away forever. Just console crap. One of the reasons I almost never buy games on day one anymore.

Back off Barbas is a must have. I tried UFO for awhile but didn't care for it. Let's see what else: Quality World Map, Oblivious Horses (so Shadowmere doesn't charge at every enemy and get himself killed) and SkyUI naturally, the unofficial patches. Mostly a pretty vanilla Skyrim. I tried several others from time to time but went back to the basics. Maybe a nudie mod, but I'm not telling.

I remember being very disappointed to hear that Warren was going to be making Disney games. Nothing against Disney or its IP, but it seemed like a waste of talent. I still have tremendous faith in Warren, and hope that he gets his mojo back. Less Epic Mickey, more Deus Ex.
I don't know. It does sort of sound like the kind of thing he'd do. He has his game philosophy of choice and emergence (or whatever it is) and he's said often enough it almost doesn't matter what kind of game it is. There was his whole city block obsession - set a game entirely in one city block and he could cram it with detail and choice and interaction and it would engage the player. From what I heard, Epic Mickey had Spector's fingerprints all over it in that regard.

I finally tried a technique I found on the web for the best, juiciest roast chicken with the crispest skin ever and it did indeed deliver on its promise. Roast the 4-5 lb chicken at 500 for 10 minutes a pound. That's it. No brining, no flipping over, no turning down the temp. No nothing. You can season with salt and pepper and stuff the cavity if you want.

Downside is your oven will smoke a little from the splattering burning grease and it can make a bit of a mess. So turn turn off the fire alarms and set your oven to autoclean before you go to bed. After 30 minutes I opened the doors and windows and turned on the fan. The smoke wasn't that bad.

So it was fantastic chicken, super duper juicy, but really who wants to deal with the smoke and grease. I'm not sure if I'll do it again.

I don't think Avatar was as bad as Verno wants to make it out to be, but it certainly wasn't great cinema. I think of it as "pop entertainment" much like "pop music". Fun to listen to/watch occasionally, but nothing for the history books. The Twilight movies aren't as bad as so many make them out to be either. I was a bit surprised at how little "teen romance" was in them based on their reputation. Once again, they fit the "pop entertainment" role. But whatever, to each their own...
I'm a fan of escapist entertainment as much (more than) anyone. But Avatar was so heavy-handed it bothered even me. The corporate bad guys were so over the top absurdly evil. Might as well have stuck black hats on them all while they were at it. There were zero shades of gray in the movie, not a hint of moral ambiguity. I have no desire to ever watch it a second time.

I'm one of the longest fans of the franchise, having followed Arena in developement, and considering it to be my favorite game of all time. I was actually going to kill myself when I was younger but wanted to wait for Daggerfall, so you could argue that the series saved my life.
I guess I'm the second longest fan. I started with Arena but I didn't follow it through development like you - just played it when it came out. Don't you miss passwall?

Not suicidal but I've often thought what a bummer it would be to up and die just before a new ES game came out. If I'm going to be hit by a bus or something, let it be when there aren't any good games coming out.

I really like the description of content "consumers" vs "producers" which I first read about in that article on UI specialists' opinions on Windows 8. I guess the vast majority of computer users are consumers so maybe it makes economic sense for companies to dedicate resources for those products. At work I'm a producer but at home I'm almost solely a consumer nowdays. Still, I can't imagine doing *everything* at home on a tablet or in Windows 8. That would drive me crazy. Or maybe I'm just old.

I'm still on about the bolognese sauce posting of yesterday. I will try the recipe sauron posted and let everyone know. This is good timing as I just made my usual ATK quick 30-minute sauce which is good but not great. I want to try a long-cooking sauce that'll blow my socks off.

I know about asmo's tip about adding carrot as I discovered years ago that adding the carrot pulp from a juicer makes for an incredible pizza sauce.

And at the opposite end of the literary legacy spectrum is Frank Herbert's estate. His son Brian is a huge money-grubbing asshole who churns out the absolute worst pieces of shit books with a juvenile writing style not even close to the originals (or "McDune crap" as critics have labelled it). I read the first couple of sequels and couldn't even finish the second one. He claims to be working from extensive notes his father left just for him to use in writing new books - notes which nobody has ever seen. Zero respect for any kind of legacy.

Then there's Brandon Sanderson finishing up Jordan's Wheel of Time. He's doing a great job actually. His writing is indistinguishable from Jordan's and his books have been superior to several of the later ones Jordan phoned in (not that Jordan was any kind of Tolkien or Herbert, but I think his work is deserving of respect). And in that case we know Jordan worked with him and really did leave extensive notes which the author clearly respects.

Yeah, I found NV a lot more interesting than 3. But I'll give them another shot - Skyrim was the first ES game I actually played through until the end. Maybe they're getting better.
Like people are saying, NV was the better game in a lot of ways but I loved the ruined DC setting much more than the deserty Vegas setting. Since 3-dog is coming back maybe it'll be a return to DC once more. I hope so.

Looks more fun than anything I ever saw in Crysis 2 (which I never bothered to play). I might pick this one up. Gotta hand it to Crytek. They're generous with actual gameplay videos and we don't have to put up with the 90% cutscene crap other publishers shovel on us. Course the gameplay videos were what turned me off to getting Crysis 2 but you have to admit they give you a real feeling for how the game plays.

Any SP FPS's I might want to look into? Even if they're a couple of years old.

I just finished Far Cry 3's main plot... It was surprisingly good, so I can recommend that if you are looking for something new.

I also picked up Painkiller Black on GOG... 2004 / 2005... very DOOM-like if you are into the nostalgia shooters.

Alpha Protocol... I enjoyed it, even though many poo poo it. It's cheap, so that might bring you some fun.
Good recommendations. I'd forgotten about Far Cry 3. I skipped 2 because I liked the island setting of the original and 2 just didn't seem that great. Was that the one where people complained about boring side quests where you had to drive back and forth all the time? FC 3 returns to an island setting - though not as vast as the original I guess - and it's been getting good reviews. OK. I'm in.

I have to look up PK Black - there's so many PKs out there including the crappy expansions which I stay away from like the plague. PK is one of my top 5 all time favorite games.

Don't know anything about Alpha Protocol. I'll look it up too.

I like the wishlist. I guess I'll go in and choose some games this evening. Dishonored is the only one that comes to mind right now. Might pick up a Serious Sam. I'll pass on Rage. I haven't bought very many games over the last two years - they just don't make them like they used to. Any SP FPS's I might want to look into? Even if they're a couple of years old.

I was thinking of getting this but realized I couldn't deal with the low-rez pixelated sprites. I'm no graphics whore but even I have my limit. Then I saw the comments about the Duke High Rez Pak and Eduke32. The high rez pak looks pretty awesome. I'm not sure what Eduke32 is about. What's the difference between the two? Which is better?

OK, lots of good impressions on Blues about Dishonored so I guess this will fill up my time for my upcoming two-week Xmas vacation. It's probably too soon to hope for some kind of holiday sale though, right? Just finished replaying Fallout 3 this time with all the DLC I hadn't gotten before so I'm casting around for something new until then. Maybe I'll get around to finishing Starcraft 2.
