How can you condem shooter gameplay in general but only talk about single player?
There are some points in this article, but overall it shows a shallow understanding of shooters. I didn't think this opinion was particularly insightful. |

Spoken like someone who hasn't shipped a bomb.
Often as a developer you smell the stink of a failing game much more keenly (you're much closer to it for longer), but you're still sad when it's panned on ship.
Add in the idea of crunching for X months on that bomb and well...yeah, it hurts. At the end of the day though, you're still making games for a living. Well, unless you're not, due to being let go. |

| If you like turn based strategy with a WWII bent, this game is really good. Hidden complexities underneath a simple interface, clear visuals, combined with decent enemy AI made it a standout for me. |

Counter-Strike, which is arguably the origin of the modern, military, tactical, team-based FPS genre. It's not a very strong argument though...Rainbow Six was out a year before CS got started. |

I love the style; the artwork, the music and so on are fantastic. The game play's ok -- it's a tower defense game, and the only twist on it really is that you can move the towers in their "orbit rings" around to kill enemies on their paths. On the harder difficulties, I've found that tactic necessary to get all of the medals for the higher levels.
Overall, I'd say it's ok...keep in mind that in general I love TD style games though. |

Let's see...it's only on PS3, meaning it's exclusive to PS3. What does exclusive usually mean? Oh that's right, lots of money to the developer!
That makes sense for this kind of maneuver. |

For talking so much about "realism", you'd think they'd at least fix errors like "Automatic Combat Rifle" and screwing up the pictures for the weapon sights under the ACR data...

Gah, I want new guns / vehicles / features...where's the list of those? Instead I see AKS74, PKMG, T72, etc...all the same old toys I've had forever! A new campaign doesn't excite me a lot unless they actually improved the AI*.
*Not just claim they did. |

| It could be those "optimizations" are "fix the game-breaking crash bug on the third level". Although really a talented programmer can get some serious renderer optimizations in in just a few days sometimes. |

Heroes have access to the best and rarest weapons and equipment, and will stand out visually from the rest of the soldiers. Oh great, a game with a high barrier to entry gets even worse as all the crackheads not only skill up (learning maps etc) but power up with the uberguns. Maybe I'm just being pessimistic though. |

I think that's the exact opposite of reality. Most game developers are not hardcore gamers. Sure, they'll play the uber-hyped, big-budget AAA games but that's about it. If you're talking specifically about game DESIGNERS when you say developers, I'd have to say that from my perspective you're quite mistaken. Most of the designers I know are quite passionate about good games, and have an encyclopedic knowledge of gaming history, along with being able to talk about what is good or bad about each title. That's just part of what it takes to do the job, at least on a AAA team.
Sure, they'll play the uber-hyped, big-budget AAA games but that's about it. That's why we see so much repetition of game mechanics. This is pretty far off base from an inside perspective. Game development is, as has been mentioned many times, a big money business. The big publishers are typically less interested in taking risks on quirky titles than investing in a "sure thing". Designers are definitely not the final word in the development process, but merely a contributing voice. If "Game of Whatever" makes one billion billion dollars, understand that the money people in the game industry sit up and say "Oh, we need to make our game more like THAT, because we want to make one billion billion dollars too!". This trickles down the chain of command, and eventually results in game X getting regenerating health and cover mode. I think this has probably been discussed on this site a number of times.
Secondly, the article basically complains that games are too complicated and too hard. What? Has the writer actually played any games in recent years? American developers haven't made difficult games for about a decade. Games are becoming increasingly automated too. Assassin's Creed is probably the epitome of this. I tend to agree with this. Hopefully this is a trend that will reverse.
