TomeOne, I read this PR as "let the advertising deluge in CS/CS:S begin." Somehow I'd like to think that (PC) gamers aren't quite the mainstream sheep like the typical moviegoer seems to be these days. (I LIKE the idea that you usually have to be a bit of a wierdo subculture nerd to be into this stuff.) Unless game prices drop or some other direct benefit to the end-user occurs, one would hope that gamers will resist this intrusion with their buying power. Note that game prices have not appeared to reduce at all despite the introduction of the Steam distribution method and its assumed subsequent inventory/packaging cost benefits. So we have little reason to expect that with the introduction of in-game ads we as end-users will see any cost benefit. Would guess that it won't be long until a server-side disable hack is created anyway.

CrushBug,
Could have sworn the little red crosses on the Neverwinter Nights med packs disappeared after one of the patches.. ;-) Good on you guys for making that change, willingly or otherwise.
That change was probably the first time I conscienciously began to notice the appearance of Red Crosses in games.

From purely an update perspective it seems like ATI is winning the driver battle lately. I'm probably wrong but I think that there have been two ATI driver refreshes since the last official release from nVidia (81.98, the ones from Feb 7 were nothing new afaik). Then again there weren't a whole lot of issues with the 81.98 either. After the Civ4 zoom out corruption was fixed I was happy anyway

Ok I won't bitch about the game, I'll bitch about something completely different instead
For the less Western-centric, the height of the European war was actually in 1942. We just liked to watch the Fascists and Communists kill each other for a bit before sending the cavalry in. Sorry for the history lecture.

From what I understand (primarily from watching making-of docs of The Abyss / Aliens / Terminator / etc.) this guy is a absolute perfectionist down to small details, and usually won't take on a project unless he has complete oversite and quality control. This MMOG sounds like an integral part of his plans, so its hard to believe that it would be a Matrix Online style pile of rushed crap. Guess we'll see
"That's it, man. Game Over, man, Game Over."

This game is alot of fun. The ~30min window it takes to play a game fits nicely when you want a quick break. Seems like this enjoyable title is flying under the radar though. Had never heard about it myself until Blue's mentioned the demo awhile back.

U7 Black Gate and Serpent's Isle were excellent games as well, completely immersive and detailed environments. They also required the most laborious DOS bootdisk I ever made, lol
Played a bit of Lazarus so far and its very polished and enjoyable. If you're an old Ultima fan, give it a shot if you already haven't.

Been waiting for Lazarus for years, what a great Christmas present! Ultima V is still one of the top 5 games I ever played, can't wait to try this out. Woohoo!!

That Dolby Digital Live tech that Diamond are using looks very interesting. I've got my PC hooked up via SPDIF/optical to a 5.1 home theatre system, but currently my software DVD player (powerDVD via "output to SPDIF") is the only thing that will enable multi-channel sound for me. None of my games will work in multichannel right now, only stereo. The alternative is to hook up everything using all the analogue connections, but what a mess/pain and most home theatre systems don't even have the inputs anyway. If they can successfully translate DS3D/EAX 2/A3D via SPDIF to a 5.1 dolby home theatre system they would really be on to something good. Prolly a lossy compression solution tho.

Wish Diamond had a release date and price on their website for the new soundcards. I was always such a Diamond slut, I remember buying the original MonsterSound the day that it came out heh.
ANY competition against Creative Labs is a good thing. Lots of people are still bitter about how they raped Aureal (which was the only source of innovation in the PC sound scene for years blabla..)
Update: apparently some Korean company called HiTeC has had a Dolby Digital Live card out for a few months ($110 US), and TerraTec has the Aureon 7.1 PCI (60 Euros incl. VAT) but its not for sale just yet. Guess I'm just behind the times. Also the Nforce2 SoundStorm could do it as well, but it was dropped for subsequent Nforce chipsets (licensing costs/issues?). Too bad. I'll wait for the Diamond card. This comment was edited on Nov 28, 23:26. |

Not really on topic, but coincidentaly I've been playing DE:IW through again this last week. No idea why really, its not a very good game. Guess after finishing CoD2, FEAR, and Quake 4 in only about a 2-week period I was left wanting for more in the FPS realm. There's always more Civ4 tho..

No issues at all with the patch here, and it fixed the stuttering Bink video as well as the max-zoom corruption I was experiencing. Enjoy guys, hope it works for you too.

Thanks for the mirror, skyguy.
I was getting stuttering video in the game before the patch on my 7800GT, hope this will fix it without the hosing you guys are experiencing. Also the world would look completely corrupt when I zoomed out to the maximum level. Neither of these issues was really a showstopper though.
Installing the patch now...
