Darks wrote on Feb 1, 2013, 00:08: Damn Dev, did you wet yourself? You were so excited for this game I wasn’t sure if it was Christmas already. lol. I didn't think I was super excited. I was sharing a cool looking game that I had seen a couple times before. I was excited to see they were able to release it without kickstarter. Sometimes when a kickstarter fails, the game goes away. For instance, if the wildman kickstarter fails, I think its likely we'd never see the game (not that I have much interest in it myself). I also like to do research on games before I buy them if they aren't just a few dollars. So I linked to various sources for other people to look into the game as well if they are interested in that type of game.
I've been more excited about other games. Like portal 2, man I LOVED THAT GAME. Cave Johnson made that game!
Recently I've been enjoying sleeping dogs when it went on sale. BTW, I should have listened to the posts on blues and NOT bought all the DLC. Some of it is basically just cheat DLC, and there's no way to disable DLC once you buy it. One of the times I didn't research a purchase, it bit me on the behind. I wonder if they will include all those in the GotY edition. I seem to recall that with saints row 3, it at least lets you disable the cheat DLC if you want.
Anyway, its up to other people if they want to buy retrovirus or not. I don't recommend it for everyone, if you think you might be interested, check out the WTF is to see him play through the first part of the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0CAJvU7Dhg |

Excellent. I think this was one that didn't work out on kickstarter, and I was quite interested in it since I loved Descent back in the day. http://cadenzainteractive.com/games/retrovirus/ http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cadenzainteractive/retrovirus I'm glad to see it got published even without the kickstart. If anyone wants a DRM free version, they have one for sale on their website.
I just also realized this is the company that did sol survivor (a tower defense kinda game that I've enjoyed)
Edit: They also mention in a KS update that if you purchased through another distributor while it was pre-order/beta (desura, gamestop, etc) then they will give you a steam key if you want.
Edit 2: Looks like it has co-op, and I like this bit:
Customize an antivirus program, focusing on strength, speed or cunning, with weapons and utilities to suit a variety of play styles.
Ok I'm going to grab it.

And unlike COD, they don't milk it has much so I'd expect a lot of bites when it's put out there.
It is indeed a huge franchise with some massive sellers, but BECAUSE they don't milk it as much, money wise the overall franchise its not nearly as big as CoD franchise. Plus they don't go nuts with DLC and map packs, so thats another big chunk of revenue that CoD pulls in for actiblizz. |

jacobvandy wrote on Jan 31, 2013, 15:15: Exactly. MS/Sony would have to pay Rockstar a Titanic boatload of cash to make GTA V a next-gen launch title, to make up for the opportunity cost. Yup. Being a launch game makes the most sense for a medium caliber title. It's awesome for them, because it gives them some exclusivity and every single person buying that machine is desperate for games. If you're the only FPS at launch then you're guaranteed 2 million sales or so.
But if you're a game that's going to hit 5 million in your sleep, you don't release for a platform that doesn't even have an installed base of 5 million.
If Microsoft paid Rockstar, say, a billion dollars to make GTA5 an Xbox 3 launch exclusive it would probably happen. And it would probably make the Xbox 3 such an immediate winner that Sony would have trouble to get back. But it's not happening. I agree with your analysis. But I doubt RS's price would be that high. They'd probably sell themselves for a couple hundred mil. |

I agree. I LOVED that game. I've played them all, from the original POP 1 & 2, to the early 3d one, to the latest ones. POP:SOT was my favorite.
If ubi did one closer to that, used the latest technology (don't nerf for obsolete console graphics) and promised to have no DRM, I'd kickstart another POP game. Unfortunately, I doubt it would happen, both because they'd want way too much money to get started on one, and because I highly doubt they'd commit to any of those things.

Because I don't think more than 5 people remember that movie, including the people in it themselves. It wasn't that bad. It was just an average action movie though. And it didn't have a whole lot to do with the franchise. I agree with the IMDB rating of 6.6 Plus if you compare it to game movies in general, most of them suck so much it was a masterpiece lol. |

They make stupid decisions but they usually reverse course after enough complaints. Why the heck would you expect a service pack to change things? They ALREADY made it more restrictive even after feedback from the beta. For instance, you used to be able to set a registry key to have it boot to desktop mode early in the beta. Then MS decided (AFTER feedback complaining about metro) that they didn't actually want anyone booting to desktop and disabled that registry key, so you were FORCED to boot to metro first when starting the computer.
We will be LUCKY if ms decides to relent a bit on the next windows. Microsoft will have to change whether it fits their vision for Windows or not given the reception of Windows 8. Windows 8 kind of hit with a thud and they are blaming everyone but themselves at the moment. They have to sober up and realize it isn't want the consumers, business, or corporate users wanted out of the OS.
I really don't think Microsoft can take another failure or lousy launch again without some permanent damage. Software developers are starting branch out to other platforms to avoid vendor lock. Users were slow to migrate to vista too. MS didn't back down and return to an XP style interface. After 7 came out, most people ended up adopting and adjusting, and many businesses have migrated or are in the process of migrating to 7.
The push for multiplatform is far more due to the mobile/tablet market exploding and has been going on a while than anything to do with MS vender locking. |

Vista was bleh, 7 was good. 98SE was good, ME was ugh, and XP was great.
Just depends if they stick with what is already failing or not. They doubled down on xbox 360 when xbox 1 failed hard moneywise (lost them billions overall, which I guess they counted as cost of entering market). And in the end, I believe it paid off. So if MS looks at sticking with trying to wall people into the MS app store, they may well double down on the next windows and do something like lock out desktop mode entirely. If MS they start making a bunch from the app store, or think they can make a bunch of they do it, they will probably do it. Or maybe they will come to their senses and make the metro interface a little more friendly and give easier access to desktop.

Some people would argue minecraft isn't much of a game either, and its sold millions. There's clearly a proven market out there for those kinda things. Because Minecraft this is not. No, but there's similarities. Both have a lot of openness. Both are survival type games. Both are very popular (while day z is a mod, arma 2 isn't, and many people have bought that specifically because of that mod). A quick google shows that 1 million different people tried it in the first 4 months of release. link |

Sleeping dogs stuff (even DLC) is 75% off. $10 for the game.
The DLC is confusing. The dragon master pack claims to have 5 dlc, but lists only 3. As well, once thats purchased, steam still lets you purchase the the individual ones you supposedly already own. Someone screwed up there.
I'm installing it right now so I can't tell WTF I actually own yet.
Speaking of DLC, steam's tracking for it as always is horrendous. It should be shown on the main page with the list of DLC which ones you own and don't own. You end up having to add all to cart and remove one at a time, and then steam's cart bugs out sometimes if you remove too many items too quickly and clears your cart, making you start all over. Which is a big pain if its a 30 or so DLC like with magicka. Speaking of the cart, valve get into the last decade and give us checkboxes and select all options for the cart, so its easier to manipulate the cart.
Edit: And yes I do know about going into library and clicking properties and getting the list that way. Problem is, it doesn't always match up. For instance, magicka has a DLC called "ValveTestApp73121". WTF is that? And its sorted differently than store. Its a major pain to match up each one from store to that list, if it works. Its far easier just to add everything from steam store and see which ones it will let me buy. Those are the ones I don't have yet.

But actually following through with a universal ban for screwing around in a beta test would cause far more bad press then it prevents. I think it's an empty threat. Well if you are willing to take that chance with your main origin account, go for it. I'd much rather create and use another account. |
