Steam still has issues for me. My inventory won't load, and the forum is on/off. Click on a thread, and it works, click on the next page, it won't load. Click again a couple of minute slater, the page loads. I hope they find those DDoS guys and give them a short time in prison. Just long enough to impress them.

I was trying to get my winter badge finished before everything disappeared. After first I thought I'd broken it by hitting refresh 8 bazillion times trying to get a card before someone else purchased it

Also you're punishment suggestion is far too mild for the internet. I'm afraid you're going to have to suggest being drawn and quartered or Colombian neck tie if you want to be taken seriously.

If there's any ddosing going on its from many thousands of legit customers trying to craft before things disappear. Good ole steam and still not having enough front end capacity or load balancing.

Yeah, keyboard and mouse is SO 2007. Who uses that shit anymore?
No joke, one of the places I work is still stuck on PS/2 mice and keyboards. I'm trying to push for some new KVM's in the racks, since the new servers mostly don't have those ports.

Not many people are aware, but the borders are considered a "constitution free zone" according to the government since 1952 as the DHS, CBP, and ICE are given authority to search people without any probable cause and disregard the 4th amendment in a boundary 100 miles from the border.
Its not like a lot of people live that close to the border though, right? Only like 2/3rds of the population or so.

I'm sure Valve has a contingency plan in case they go out of business and have to shut the servers down. If you're not a moron there's no reason to worry about it today.
I know the rumors, but in reality, why would they? That would violate agreements about DRM with all the publishers, that would likely get them sued as well, theoretically that could introduce criminal charges. Plus if they are shutting down, who is going to put the manpower into doing such a thing?

Julio wrote on Jan 1, 2014, 14:47:
Blame Bethesda and Steam for their tight pro-drm stance. Hopefully everyone that wanted these got them by now.
Think about what you are saying. Games like oblivion and morrowind had such minimal DRM it was a laugh (disk check that could easily be fooled with just a burned copy). Beth has been really good about DRM in general.

I don't remember seeing them on the shelves much back then. Still sad I missed them. They must have been far better when they were just released.

Best thing about all our love for the old school games is their return via KickStarter and indie studios. Can't wait for Wasteland 2!
I actually have them all as retail boxes
And I'm in wasteland 2 as well!

Now there are very few games they sell that can actually be re-sold, because most of what they sell are Steam keys and of course they can't take those back once you've redeemed them. I wouldn't be surprised if Valve is working on a streaming demo system, though.
It wouldn't surprise me if valve was working on reselling digital games as well. What with that german law thing.

News Comments > GOG.com on DRM and Money-Back Guarantees
1. Re: GOG.com on DRM and Money-Back Guarantees Jan 1, 2014, 11:44 Dev

Great points about piracy!
So many publishers count every single download as a lost sale. While undoubtedly there are some, nowhere near all of them are!

One key area where DRM can prevent piracy with total success (AFAIK), is the pre-release DRM, such as half life 2 had with steam, where the game is missing a key file or two that must be downloaded, and it's not unlocked until the day of release. People rushing out to buy it to get earliest possible access might well turn to a pirate version if its available days in advance, since one of their prime goals is to get the game ASAP and they are willing to pay for it. This is one of the very few areas I support DRM in, and I believe its a big percentage of real lost sales, not just imagined ones. And if a company is nice about it, they can remove that DRM after the game's release, without much impact.

Also, as a purely bottom line business perspective, the question is will GoG get enough increased sales from people willing to try things they wouldn't have tried without the guarantee, to overcome the extra expense from the support requests.

Probably a time limit on the rights they had to distribute the games, that ran out today. I imagine they had the rights from interplay.

Now that they are owned by beth, wonder what will happen.

Hopefully everyone who wanted it from GoG got it. I believe they had them free for a while too.

They both are about trucks right? So they are exactly the same game, right?

I have a friend who got the game and is loving it. He's earned money and pimped out his ride with like 15 extra headlights on racks and a bunch of extra horns. He's shown me screenshots, it basically looks as bright as daylight in front of him when driving at night

The one ubisoft is doing? The P2W game they've marked as early access? That will become F2P but right now is pay only?

Never heard of it and don't care. Game looks like a pile of shit anyway. Who would be stupid enough to buy that? The vast majority of early access games are by microscopic indie devs working on a fraction of the budget to what big publishers would usually fund them. This has to be explained every day because morons like to cry.

Get it now? Oh no of course not.
Dude, I get it. I've backed over 100 projects on KS. But some people want a complete game, I can understand that too.

I think if Steam weren't there we'd be using something other that isn't called Steam but still does all the things Steam does. In the end, the market showed it needed a digital retail service that is publisher agnostic....

[...]

How insanely stupid it was from Stardock to sell Impulse is beyond words though.
EA showed us what things would have been like when they were running their original service (the old EA digital download service way before origin). Where they CHARGED you to re-download something.

Actually, stardock made the smart decision to sell impulse. They got out of it for a good price at the right time. They make most of their money selling utilities like Start 8, not games. And they were spreading themselves thin with all the little games they were putting onto impulse. Remember how they were starting to have financial trouble? That sale bailed them out and they seem to be healthy again.
There's been details about the reasons for the sale written up by stardock as I recall.
That being said, I do miss their vision for impulse. They wanted to let people sell their "used" digital games, had a nice gamer's rights document (that they unfortunately didn't fully live up to).

If Valve decided to get out of the business, there would be a long line of people wanting to buy it from them, but lets hope that never happens.
It won't. If they did, they'd lose basically all their income, and they are having too much fun spending it on things like trying to enter the console market, custom controllers, biofeedback devices, custom OS, and anything else they can think of to do that's fun and interesting and often expensive, and NOT HALF LIFE.

Seriously valve, farm it out already.

The load on Steam has been fine until L4D2 being made free today.
Didn't even have a problem accessing Steam in the first hour of the first day of the sale.
Everyone single holiday sale and nearly all major releases, I have at least one glitch on the steam storefront, or profiles, or inventory, etc, when I try to load a page, usually with some steam code when it fails. And I had a couple this sale too, even before this.

Regardless, doesn't change my point that I've had for years about them needing to make storefront issues and uptime a higher priority

Good ole steam. As usual their front end is crap and entirely overloaded on a popular deal, and their content servers are just fine.

Like I've said before.
Protip: If your company relies on income from your store front, IT NEEDS TO BE UP 100% OF THE TIME!
Seriously, contract some enterprise store front end consultants, if you don't want to hire specialists. Things like load balancing and redundancy, etc. I know for a fact its NOT the bandwidth, since everytime I check, they have plenty of it in reserve in their stats page. Which means there's no excuse.
Servers are cheap nowadays. Recently for my job, I submitted an order for a $20k gen 8 HP server to host some virtual stuff. Things like 15k raid arrays (ssds weren't needed in this case), dual high end Xeon CPUs with 10 cores each, 128 gb of fast memory.

I'm certain that steam is losing FAR MORE money on these issues and outages than it would cost to fix them. And they have plenty of data to show how much the load grows each year during sales, how may accounts they have active, etc.
