Windows 8 is terrible. Flat out terrible.
That's simply not true. I agree that Metro apps are terrible with mouse and keyboard but as a desktop operating system is it much better than Win7 - from the multi-monitor improvements, to Task Manager, to file copying, to cloud-based accounts, to the Explorer ribbon and the introduction of Storage Spaces. I can't believe there are people still defending the old Start Menu when since Vista it was limited to around 250 pixels in width. On any modern monitor that is absolutely ridiculous.

Don't get me wrong, there are some changes that I really don't like. But as a desktop operating system it is an improvement on Windows 7. Is it an essential upgrade? No, not for most people. Is it worth using? Absolutely.
From your sig you seem like one of those guys who believes anything new is good. I used to be like that with hardware too. Then I decided to shift to buying hardware that maximises value. The longer it sits in my pc while maintaining good performance the better. I expect Win 7 will remain installed on my pc for a few years. I intend to get my money's worth.

All true, but really there's no point explaining to the idiots who missed the OFP\ArmA boat. It's like missing Quake or Doom and now saying they're shit.

Not really, those games had simple control systems and core concepts that were easier to grasp. I'm sure people would be much more open to revisiting the games if you didn't call them names and such. For example if you had been specific like Jedi Master about what exactly to tweak it would be genuinely helpful as opposed to pointlessly derisive.
I have been "specific" for years and years and years and have responded to 100s of posts here and on other forums accommodating people who can't control this game. You won't bother to look but it's all in my post history. Really, at some point you just have to let people who are lazy sink. You cannot grasp a FPS with a different way of doing things? Poor things.

If that PHJF character a bunch of posts down bitches yet again about the game, I'm supposed to yet again defend it? Nah. I'm happy to respond though. I enjoyed typing it out and I'm satisfied you took the time out of your exceptionally busy day to respond too.

I've been playing OFP and Arma 1 and 2 for over 10 years now and I've never had a problem with the controls AFTER I tweaked them.
There are some things that take getting used to, like fixed animations that take X amount of time, but it's not difficult at all.

The main weakness is the missions BIS made for them. Some are good, some are lousy, but there is a never-ending fountain of new missions using just the stock units, not to mention the tons of mods. So forget the campaigns, you'll get stuck and frustrated and think "OMG this game is crap" when it's just the way they made those missions.

Zero out the aiming deadzone and head bob, keep smoothing at a minimum, and it works well. Also, there is some inertia in there because it's not at all realistic to swing your M249 around 180 degrees in under half a second just because you can in game X.
All true, but really there's no point explaining to the idiots who missed the OFP\ArmA boat. It's like missing Quake or Doom and now saying they're shit. These guys just need to suck it up and go slink off somewhere cold. Everything they might say about BIS is spot on. Shit programming, shit campaigns etc, I'm a huge critic of how they've done things. That said, after 11 years it's the only game that follows me between computers. It's quirky as hell. But so damn open ended. Sure to get the best out of it you need to play the game from within the easy mission editor (something that's quite hard for morons to use since it requires imagination). Five clicks in the editor and I can have a great SP experience. Go sit on a hill and set the view distance to 8 miles. Kill a guy at 2 miles. Whatever. Maybe fly 12 guys into a battle in a Huey, then switch to a different unit and lead the 12 guys to their deaths. Endless possibilities. Of course some people just can't see the possibilities. Their loss. And our gain, one less bitch on a server with no imagination who needs the Frostbite engine and hype media campaign to feel that a game is "good".

Steam really doesn't need any more bloat.. They need to optimise it and make it speedier. I have so many extreme unexplained slow game boots that make me question their ability to add any new features. I'm so tired of deleting my steam folder and having to restart it just to get certain games to start. Yeah, this is the only official solution to some of the issues I've had with it.

I haven't touched Dwarf Fortress in 3 years. What's changed? It's hard getting an overview as the dev's blog details things in minute detail without an bigger picture posts.

If you think this is depressing...you should see a lot of the people who play them. I was in a large clan and the vast majority of the people in it were looking forward to this game. I would ask them about the original Ghost Recon game and they'd all say 'oh, you mean Vegas 1? yeah it was awesome'. Most of them aren't even aware of the original Tom Clancy games, let alone played any of them. Someone actually argued with me that the original Ghost Recon game wasn't first person.

Honestly, how did two first person, tactical/military-type series (Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon) evolve into 3rd person shitty Michael Bay action movies? Both series had really solid single-player and multiplayer. Rogue Spear/Ravenshield and Ghost Recon 1 multiplayer were some of the most fun I've had on PC, and that's not even counting all of the co-op/custom stuff you could do.

/old-man gamer bitching
Yeah gamers are ultimately responsible for the games we play today. There isn't some magic divide between the moron at the LAN and the developers producing the stuff we play today. Same people. No idea what some of them were playing back in 2000. N64?

When I lanned Ravenshield or OGR there were always 30% of the guys in the room who didn't get it, "too slow", "die too easily". So if we're honest this genre has always had one foot in the grave.

Those jobs are much more at risk from guys like me who haven't owned a TV in 8 years and only consume the media I want to watch. What is a "TV channel"? What is a commercial? I need to sit through something I don't want to? That's foreign to me. I would switch a box on and vegetate watching something I don't want to? I only watch what I want to, I never sit through something "just 'cos".

Did you actually watch the video? They appeared to be engaging German aircraft. I also thought this was odd (a WW2 aircraft placed into a modern setting) but it looks as though they're at least providing enemy aircraft to dogfight.

I had an interview a while back at a F2P dev. During the generic "ask the prospective employer questions to show your interest in the position" I asked about their F2P business model. In a positive vague way. The guy instantly became real defensive and went on about "long term strategy to remain in business" as though they were always just breaking even and not all that confident in what they're doing.

Look at the MMO market. It can be lucrative. If you're WOW. Everything else is flash in the pan. F2P is throwaway gaming. I cannot see many of these titles lasting longer than a few months until the next gimmick F2P title comes along. Who are they planning to addict into their "longterm" cashcow? Poor teenagers with enough time on their hands to grind away in mp? Exactly the sorts of people who get bored quickly and move on.

The major devs going f2p are trying to cash in on some elusive hard to predict casual market of gamers while dropping the core gamers looking for good SP experiences. Why not spend less money on graphics, aim to be profitable at 500 000 to 1 million sales rather than gambling on shallow games with broad appeal that may or may not sell 5 million copies.

And yes, Tribes f2p is good and I realise there are exceptions.

That's a very limited market. Unless MS are happy selling this device only to a niche community of tech geeks. There isn't a real tablet market. It's all Ipad. I have single digit IQ relatives who are about as tech savvy as a garden hose cavorting about with Ipads excitedly. MS's latest OS is rock solid and the BSOD meme is played out, and inaccurate, but the "ha ha bsod" BS is taken as fact amongst casual tech users. The comparisons to the Xbox, that MS can sell this at a loss are forgetting that unlike the Xbox there are no games to make money off of, no long term gaming community to build. Can't compare a console to a gadget like this.

I class the action as "survival" too since the character moves somewhat slowly and needs to kill enemies precisely otherwise they'll quickly overwhelm him. Compared to most shooters these days the action is tough and the character handicapped by good design choices.
Which is what makes the insta-roll added in DS3 excuse the pun a bad move.
