I realise the game activists on Bluesnews didn't play it but this sounds identical to Anno 2070's online component. Essentially there are gameplay mechanics that all players vote on or take part in that have bonus effects on your SP gameplay. I imagine all Simcities will exist within a fictional country and players will be able to vote for "presidents" or global policies that have bonus effects within SP gameplay.
Your SP games are still available when the network is offline, just that certain of these meta features are not. |

From the kickstarter's page:
What will the $200,000 be used for?
$200,000 will bring TAKEDOWN to Alpha. Private investors are lined up, but unsure of the market for an old-school tac shooter. A successful Kickstarter campaign will convince them that this is a viable market. Along with their investment, pre-sales of the game (A $15 Kickstarter pledge is a significant discount on the final game price) will also contribute to completion of the project. Kickstarters will have access to a closed Alpha. |

According the Ground Branch forums Sonedecker did at least 'talk' to the guys on the kickstarter. I think he's too invested in his own vision to allow it to be taken over and seems ok with slowly plodding along on GB's development (although he works fulltime on actual military grade tactical shooters..so GB development is probably a secondary concern). It's a shame because GB has actual art resources created, it's way beyond the concepts in the kickstarter project.

It was funny as hell since clearly the admin and his pals thought MAV riding was some super secret exploit that put them into a position that made them immune from fire. Suddenly they were all being bombarded and then oh nooo the bitching began how dare you kill us.
Might as well include jumppads. |

I enjoyed BF3. Yeah I wish it had mod tools, but hardly any titles these days do. I could bitch about the lack of LAN, but who LANs these days anyhow? LAN parties sadly went the way of sleepovers a long long time ago.
Far as player numbers reflecting dislike amongst the community. What are the top games right now? CS? MW? The current crop of gamers don't keep me playing multiplayer titles the way I might have in my youth. |

You can't compare the occasional hit indie game to products developed for a specific target market with investors, publishers and deadlines. High budget titles are designed to succeed EVERYTIME, they're not created for "fun". I wasn't the one that started the comparison. Shrug. I wasn't aiming anything specifically your way. There's enough people bringing indie games into this conversation though. I don't think those titles have much relevancy. Unless you're an idealist that believes large scale for profit enterprises should behave like mom and pop operations and do things for the "love of it". |

| Yeah it looked nothing like Prey. Based on the concepts they could rebrand it as a Bladerunner style cyberpunk game and no one would be any the wiser. I think the art style drew more attention than the Prey connection. |

Jerykk wrote on Mar 24, 2012, 00:28: Exactly. It's been proven time and time again that a game's success or failure has nothing to do with piracy. True, however if you prevent or at least delay piracy you might be able to sell more of a completely crappy game then if people can test it first. That is why we get less demos...and demos that expire after a game launches. Hide how crappy it is so you can still pawn it off. Again..screwing over the legitimate paying customer.
Actually most devs don't sit in large leather chairs with cats on their arms strumming their fingers on a mahogany desk thinking "Don't release the DEMO or they'll realise our plan for world domination!"
PC market isn't important enough\PC gamers sample games in other ways = not worth creating a PC demo. |

No solution to any of this, beyond perhaps publishers resigning themselves to piracy.
Publishers will always see pirated games as lost sales even when that isn't the case.
There's a large group of gamers who will freeload regardless of how good a title is. Although I hesitate to call them "gamers". There are a lot of people who just pirate anything because they can.
These "gamers" who pirate major titles aren't the ones buying indie games. Gamer's boycotting titles because of DRM are way in the minority. Publishers probably lump you in with the pirates. No amount of arguing is going to change their view on you, no amount of stating that you're boycotting a game over the DRM is going to change much beyond your ego.
Sadly, those of us willing to pay for PC titles are stuck in the middle. It's going to be that way for the foreseeable future. |
