I have a backlog of unfinished titles with actual gameplay depth. This seems too much on the casual end for me. No room for it I'm afraid.

yet, as an example, Diablo 3 took 10 years for Blizz to develop.

2-3 years is certainly possible for a AAA game... just not all of them. Nothing wrong with either length of time, as long as it gets done and done well.

Not sure Diablo 3 is the best analogy.

1. D3 was not developed continuously over that time. The initial version was canceled in 2005, and they had to restart from scratch, IIRC.

2. Blizzard had literally billions of dollars from WoW to fund development. There was no chance at all that running out of money would be the reason the game didn't ship.

There is a non-zero chance that RSI will run out of money, and the longer things stretch out, the greater that becomes. That's what I'm saying. That being said, I don't think that % is very large ATM, but it's growing.

Those who take the time to defend star citizen, especially those that register on a site specifically to defend it, are game purchasers who follow games but not games development. More likely to buy marketing hype. Or depending on your perspective more enthusiastic

Star Citizen seems to have cornered the market of guys with large disposable incomes that don't follow games development closely yet still remember a time when they played Elite in their bedroom as teens. I think they hear about star citizen, blindly get excited and just pay, then get back to their other non game related lives/hobbies.

I'm ok with being labeled a cynic if I can label them as gullible

You have time in your busy day to play a video game you've spent 3200 dollars on?

Insanity. 3200. Insane.

What is it you really need to get out Julio, were you abused as a child, did your wife leave you?

What does the amount I've pledged have anything to do with being a fanboy? I see it as an investment in entertainment, if it doesn't pan out then I guess it was a bad investment, no matter, I think I'll survive.

Some very nice graphics tech present in this game. The terrain and water deformation is easily the best I've ever seen. I wish FPS titles had stuff like this.

Gameplay wise it has the same appeal that Euro Truck Simulator has.

News Comments > Homeworld Remastered Trailer
20. Re: Homeworld Rerailer Feb 19, 2015, 17:16 Dmitri_M

Well I guess it's a good way to reintroduce the series to new fans and perhaps get a modern 3rd game. Until that mythical announcement though it remains a cheap cash in. The beacon of brilliance that was the original Homeworld seems to have blinded many to this fact I sympathize. It was an exceptional game.

Game company (a greedy one at that) opens a series of texture files in Photoshop. They set the canvas size to 400%. They do a repaint over the old texture. A programmer updates the supported resolutions. Perhaps he adds some quick post processing effects. He adds support for normal maps but since they're practically keeping the models the same (maybe ading a few bevels here and there) they simply NDO or Crazybump the diffuse textures. I've already bought this game. Not paying for it again when it looks practically the same and I know how much, or little, has gone into this "remaster".

Over promising is part of being a success in any commercial endeavor that revolves around creativity.

Source: Time spent working in the film, advertising and video game industry soon makes you realise that the guys paying your salary are all doing it. If not to the public, certainly to shareholders, clients and CEOs.

I would not be surprised if Moly invited the no holds barred style. An alternative way to make press.

Best RTS series in the past few years. It's not as daunting as it looks. If you're a bginner start off with a handful of units with strengths that compliment each other and pursue a single strategy.

Air units supporting infantry (don't worry with armour). Armour only with helisupport etc etc

I really enjoyed NEO Scavenger. Tough game. Longest I lasted was 48 days. Though my last game was done with "saves" (copying the save game out). Even then I died from something incurable.

Silicon Avatar wrote on Jan 24, 2015, 14:10:
That said, if you want a PvP experience that is really unlike anything else (which is why it sells so well, btw), you might like it. Just seeing another player from a few thousand yards is enough to get my blood pumping. Screw the survival bullshit, the game is really all about the PvP.

I've never played DayZ but reading this comment makes me understand why it's so popular. And no, it's popularity isn't a fluke. This gameplay style has been lying dormant in that engine for more than a decade and only now the masses have finally caught onto it.

Back in 2001 when Operation Flashpoint was released (the same engine/gameplay as ArmA) we would create pvp missions that were essentially the same as DayZ minus the zombies. Players scavenging on massive islands, trying to find other players. The rush of seeing another guy 2km away and spending 30 minutes hunting him. It was the most intense PVP multiplayer I've ever experienced.

I totally get why DayZ is so popular. But you either "get" it..or don't. And yeah you need a tolerance for an engine that prioritises scripting flexibility over feature limited stability. In subsequent years I tried to find other players interested in this sort of protracted, slow gameplay but couldn't. It feels good to see so many others discovering what the OFP/ArmA engine is really all about. It was never about bland pedantic "hardcore realistic military simulation" as so many of the venil community believed. It's best feature was always tough survival orientated PVP.

The original OFP Resistance SP campaign featured scavenging weapons between missions (whatever you could load into a truck carried over to the next mission) while part of a guerilla force. DayZ is in that spirit. It's a shame it's taken so long for Bohemian to capitalise. I'm not surprised it took an outsider from New Zealand to realise that potential though. Many of the longterm staff just don't have the imagination.

Your comparisons to large AAA studios are flawed. Their titles aren't funded by private people.

Companies like Ubisoft can absorb a certain amount of financial risk. Missed deadlines, disappointment from dropped features, buggy releases. When these things happen the consumer has the right to not purchase the product. Anyone putting large quantities of cash into SC prior to it's release is taking on this risk personally.

Whether gamers realise it or not most AAA studios are careful about the promises they make regarding features. They certainly don't always hit their mark, but often they're quite vague and general in nature prior to release. They're much more likely to throw up a CG trailer that hints at features that may or may not be present than actually committing promised features to a publicly available document.

The sorts of people gullible enough to dump 1000s of dollars into an unreleased game are likely the same type who would turn on RSI if things don't meet their expectations.

It's simple. They're not spending any money marketing the PC version.

Why spend money marketing it to an audience of pirates. It's a PS4/Xbone port anyhow, right? No specific PC development. No marketing, just get it out there. Make what we can.

I'll be very curious to see how well it runs on PC. The previous PC GTA was unoptimized. Seems a lot of you have forgotten that.
