News Comments > GeForce GTX TITAN Announced
38. Re: GeForce GTX TITAN Announced Feb 19, 2013, 13:54 Dmitri_M

After 15 years of building my own desktops and purchasing the latest gfx cars I sold my last and moved to a gaming laptop exclusively. 1080p display and it has the equivalent of a mid ranged 5 series in it. I can run pretty much anything on it on nearly maxed, it's small and isn't noisy (unless I'm running a 3D app). I'll never go back to a giant tower of doom with 12 fans.

Unless we have a return to PC only FPS releases I expect this thing to last me a few more years. ArmA is the only non-port FPS I play and it stresses my system (and that's partly because it's a unoptimized).

News Comments > DayZ Update
6. Re: DayZ Update Feb 16, 2013, 21:59 Dmitri_M

The standalone product's engine won't satisfy players. People who have come to BI's engine thanks to DayZ probably expect some huge improvements to the engine for the standalone, but they don't realise that when BI say they're going to make improvements it's all very understated.

If it's lucky it'll feature ported features from VBS, but that's about it. BI have supported their products wonderfully over the years. The problem is most of that support is band aiding and tiny incremental improvements of the dated engine.

They need to throw out all of the code related to animation and player movement and start over. Keep the player's view attached to the head, independent of the gun (unlike every other FPS) but quit relying on the peculiar movement system where animations cannot be paused once they're initiated. Will BI discard something that has been present in their engine since the late 1990s? No. By now it's probably reams of uncommented mess that no one could even begin to unravel or correct.

20. Re: Ships Ahoy - Dead Space 3 Feb 6, 2013, 07:32 Dmitri_M

I loved the first two even though I didn't like the overall direction of the second. Less claustrophobic setting. They should really have kept it in space. An ice planet seems like a real B-grade Saturday morning Syfy channel turn.

I might wait for a sale before I try 3. Sad really.

The first one was ok as a novelty. The second was enh. This will certainly be worse.

14. Re: DayZ Status Report Jan 27, 2013, 06:55 Dmitri_M

The DayZ style freewheeling gameplay has been in OFP/ArmA for 10 years. Sure, we weren't playing with zombies but large scale military missions that involved running around, hit and running AI and "living off the land". DayZ without zombies. I have no expectations that they're make any real improvements to the engine. Nothing has changed over the years except incremental updates to the graphics engine. The current DayZ gameplay has been possible since 2001.

Nope. Still unplayable.

What bugs? Bugs with the Linux version, or in CK2 in general?

He probably deems the game unplayable since it doesn't simulate the lice in your king's hair piece.

There's probably a mod for that, check Paradox's forum.

I expect to find lice there.

This DayZ hype is really starting to benefit ArmA 2.
Much more players on normal ArmA 2 servers now. The effect that I feared that there would be much more cheaters because of this, has not been true. However there are much more teamkillers and other griefers on servers now.
There will be a brief spike in players. The sorts of players who complain about the game or require endless help and then quit. Few will stay for the non Day-Z content.

Now it's all tripe.

Television post 2000 has been great. It's replaced Hollywood films as my media of choice.

It's declined a bit now with series like Deadwood, The Wire, The Shield, The Sopranos and a host of others ending their runs but honestly if you think television from the 90s or 80s was better than the past 10 years then you truly are a troll. Or perhaps your mouth is so big you think we want to hear your opinion on everything even shit you know nothing about.

Valve aren't hurting for money. How hard would it be to knock out another episode? It's not like episode 1 and 2 were THAT amazing.

Of course, that time has passed. It would be near impossible to satisfy any of us now unless episode 3 was titled "HL3".

Sweet! This means for 10 years or more I, as an Australian will be forced to Pirate HBO's content if I wish to watch it within a reasonable time frame.

like you actually need a reason to pirate tv shows..

gimme a fucking break
I agree that people pirate because they simply want stuff for free. That said, as someone who consumes a lot of US made media that doesn't live within the US these companies sure make it difficult for me to give them money. Whether it's audiobooks, MP3 purchases, films. I'm always working hard trying to find a way to legitimately pay for things, having to find online stores that don't lock me out over regional restrictions.

In South Africa, a fairly rough country at the best of times, my grandmother had surgery under our universal health care system. She had no health insurance. It was done in a government run hospital. The surgery cost 3 dollars. In a private hospital with better conditions and higher staffing she would have paid 10 000 dollars. I guess from what I've read here all American hospitals are essentially "private"?

Just because YOU PERSONALLY don't know about other successful kickstarter examples, doesn't mean they aren't out there.

Well done for posting examples other than FTL.

If you reread my post with your histrionic internet poster bottle top thick glasses removed I implied nothing about kickstarters in general.

But now that you mention it.

I got 300 dollars invested in these kooky kickstarter projects and as such I'm happy to view them for what they are. Business ventures about as likely to succeed or fail as any conventional business venture.

Ahem.

Quit using FTL as example. That was well into development prior to the kickstarter.

Im really hoping the standalone takes a lot of the clunk out of arma's clunkyness.

Never happen. Their engine will not change in that respect. The controls are set in stone. The only that changes between game versions are incremental changes to the graphics engine. The underlying animation system which is what causes the "clunkyness" hasn't changed since the early 2000s. They tweak timings on the animations but the system itself is archaic and will likely never change.
