Best RTS series in the past few years. It's not as daunting as it looks. If you're a bginner start off with a handful of units with strengths that compliment each other and pursue a single strategy.

Air units supporting infantry (don't worry with armour). Armour only with helisupport etc etc

I really enjoyed NEO Scavenger. Tough game. Longest I lasted was 48 days. Though my last game was done with "saves" (copying the save game out). Even then I died from something incurable.

That said, if you want a PvP experience that is really unlike anything else (which is why it sells so well, btw), you might like it. Just seeing another player from a few thousand yards is enough to get my blood pumping. Screw the survival bullshit, the game is really all about the PvP.

I've never played DayZ but reading this comment makes me understand why it's so popular. And no, it's popularity isn't a fluke. This gameplay style has been lying dormant in that engine for more than a decade and only now the masses have finally caught onto it.

Back in 2001 when Operation Flashpoint was released (the same engine/gameplay as ArmA) we would create pvp missions that were essentially the same as DayZ minus the zombies. Players scavenging on massive islands, trying to find other players. The rush of seeing another guy 2km away and spending 30 minutes hunting him. It was the most intense PVP multiplayer I've ever experienced.

I totally get why DayZ is so popular. But you either "get" it..or don't. And yeah you need a tolerance for an engine that prioritises scripting flexibility over feature limited stability. In subsequent years I tried to find other players interested in this sort of protracted, slow gameplay but couldn't. It feels good to see so many others discovering what the OFP/ArmA engine is really all about. It was never about bland pedantic "hardcore realistic military simulation" as so many of the venil community believed. It's best feature was always tough survival orientated PVP.

The original OFP Resistance SP campaign featured scavenging weapons between missions (whatever you could load into a truck carried over to the next mission) while part of a guerilla force. DayZ is in that spirit. It's a shame it's taken so long for Bohemian to capitalise. I'm not surprised it took an outsider from New Zealand to realise that potential though. Many of the longterm staff just don't have the imagination.

Your comparisons to large AAA studios are flawed. Their titles aren't funded by private people.

Companies like Ubisoft can absorb a certain amount of financial risk. Missed deadlines, disappointment from dropped features, buggy releases. When these things happen the consumer has the right to not purchase the product. Anyone putting large quantities of cash into SC prior to it's release is taking on this risk personally.

Whether gamers realise it or not most AAA studios are careful about the promises they make regarding features. They certainly don't always hit their mark, but often they're quite vague and general in nature prior to release. They're much more likely to throw up a CG trailer that hints at features that may or may not be present than actually committing promised features to a publicly available document.

The sorts of people gullible enough to dump 1000s of dollars into an unreleased game are likely the same type who would turn on RSI if things don't meet their expectations.

WRONG. I bet they make a billion off of PC. They will closer to release AND everyone knows about it all ready.

I'm sure they will, Beagle.

It's simple. They're not spending any money marketing the PC version.

Why spend money marketing it to an audience of pirates. It's a PS4/Xbone port anyhow, right? No specific PC development. No marketing, just get it out there. Make what we can.

I'll be very curious to see how well it runs on PC. The previous PC GTA was unoptimized. Seems a lot of you have forgotten that.

7. Re: Valve: Steam Machines Jan 8, 2015, 18:31 Dmitri_M

The Steam Machine reminds me of some obscure Taiwanese tech manufacturer releasing a ready made gaming pc. It shows up at some random tech conference. Gets a few fluff pieces previewing it by tech journalists who only use macs. Perhaps a booth babe leans on it and pouts. They sell 200 units. The rest are bargain binned or end up in some Chinese village being melted down for iron. The success of steam as a digital in home Atm has led to some misguided hubris in the valve office. Now they're trying to install a physical atm too. Steam is nice. Steam Machine is pointless.

I feel like you could say that about a lot of religions, including my own.

I presume you mean Christianity. I grew up around the more extreme side of Christianity, fundamental evangelicals. They could certainly be annoying and difficult but their cultural identity cannot easily be compared to the complicated centuries long traditions practiced by the average Muslim. Evangelical Christians by comparison are fickle and silly. They divorce and get up to all kinds of naughty just like everyone else. Muslims on the other hand seem so calmy at peace with their repressed existence. Potential for breeding something awfully dark.

I hate to generalise. These are just impressions from my youth and time spent around different groups in a country where divisions among cultural groups were always painfully highlighted (South Africa).

In my country we have a sizeable Muslim minority. Many run successful businesses. They're contributors. Reliable honest people to deal with. Yet get a little closer you realise they have an agenda of control. Of making it about Islam. Or using Islam to push their own agendas, be it making money or just generally trying to domineer. A 12 person civic society committee my father was on had a single Muslim member. He presented as the nice moderate business man in the corner. Until he wanted something, upon which he'd explode into entitled rage until he got his way. The man once showed up at our house raving angrily. You'd never tell how pent up he was in normal dealings.

I don't think a culture so controlling of it's woman, so controlling generally, is in any sense healthy. Extremism grows from within Islamic culture. They want to dominate.

I dunno about iRacing. They still haven't got the tire model right in iRacing after so many iterations. I'd say rF2 and AC both have considerably better tire models than iRacing, which is now a good generation behind. I haven't tried the very latest season build of iRacing, but in the last one the grip was still too unpredictable.

As I'm seeing things, rF2 actually has the most advanced physics model available now, but it's so damn complex nobody, not even ISI, has it figured out yet (it's always been modders who get the most out of ISI's engine more so than ISI themselves). When the DW12 is updated next, *that* will be something worth looking into. Combined with Live Track and the weather system, it's the most complete sim package, bug again, it's hard to recommend because the content still hasn't truly come.

AC has a relatively simple tire model, but they've got it tuned to perfection, and it probably has the best physics on average of all of them at the moment.

Right now, things are pretty complicated. iRacing has the best tracks and the online service is great with probably the best netcode (rF2 not being far behind). rF2 has the most overall potential, the best AI by a huge margin (if you care about that), but its potential hasn't been realized yet in terms of content and the graphics are a generation behind. AC has the best graphics and the most consistent physics out of the box, but the worst netcode and AI.

iRacing will surely eventually get their tire model right. rF2 will eventually get the content it's simulation technology deserves, and AC will likely improve their netcode and AI.

Two or so ago years ago, I wrote an article for AutoSimSport, when NTMv1 for iRacing was about to be released, rFactor2 was around the corner, and AC's alpha wasn't much further off (and even, hah, LFS S3 got a mention), and proclaimed we were standing on the verge of a new dawn for sim-racing. I think I was mostly right, except it was maybe more like noon the last Tuesday-but-one rather than the dawn.

Okay. Now, this time for sure, it's the new dawn.

Agree with pretty much all of this.

The best thing about iRacing is the competitive structure. It can be very addicting. As far as it's physics are concerned it feels a generation behind. If AC and Rfactor 2 are the "new generation". I'm being obtuse, this is just a subjective feeling.

AC. If you want a game focused on driving physics.

Project Cars for the graphics. The physics are OK. I guess. It's a Gran Turismo style game for PC. Looks like a sim and tries hard to be one, but isn't.

My sim driving time is split between Iracing and AC. Iracing for the best online racing available. AC for hotlapping and the physics, which are the best I've experienced.

I'm a huge fan of the series. Watch T2 every few months.

That said, I clicked the play button with an open mind. Old Arnold..a series which has been exhausted with silly sequels and an awful TV series.

But..Dude..I didn't expect it to appear as bad as that.

Those analogies are flawed

while The Witcher gives a form of immersion similar to reading a good book.
High budget AAA titles provide immersion in the same way a hollywood blockbuster does. Visually. Loads of luscious visuals. You're immersed superficially.

Quinn wrote on Dec 15, 2014, 08:08:
Dwarf Fortress gives a form of immersion similar to doing a jigzaw puzzle

Dwarf Fortress requires a level of imagination to enjoy. The systems and control you have go beyond what you can experience with a closed world dominated by high end but mostly static visuals. The systems can transcend what amounts to walking around inside a menagerie of pretty things.

The majority of recently released titles that flaunt immersion are really just FPS titles with stats and scripted events. Whether it's Watchdogs, GTA or Skyrim.

Graphics are the safest route to "immersion". But for some it's a shallow immersion. Immersion that starts from the gameplay design up that isn't limited to FPS/third person adventure gameplay goes beyond most of the AAA output at the moment.

Nearly went with one of the Samsung phones. Bought an LG G2 instead. Having a powerful phone that lasts nearly 2 days on one charge sold me.

Work in mobile development myself. We maintain multiple graphics assets for different hardware. Essentially design the game for IOS, then drop features as needed to get it running on lower end apple and the millions of lower end android devices. It's a pain.

The first and second Terminator films weren't better because they were made "back in the day", but because they were actually good. The second especially will always hold up. Try to say that about the 3rd or 4th.

Anyhow, few film franchises can survive past a sequel. Certainly not by casting a previous lead known for his athleticism who is way past his prime.

And if you don't agree with me, watch out. I might tell you about the time I defended woman, rented a camaro, dated many young ladies and was an all round self loathing gamer anti-gamer.
