It's interesting that someone made the comparison with Rome. I've thought that too, but not in that way. More like early Rome after Veii fell. Veii was the 'yin' to Romes 'yang' early on. When it ceased to be influencial (i.e. conquered) the 'world' ceased to be bi-polar, and Rome increasingly found itself under attack from small beligerent forces. To defend itself from these 'barbarians'(and for many other reasons), Rome increased it's sphere of influence started in motion the tradition of conquest that led to the vast holdings under the Republic and Empire.
Not saying there's a direct corrallation between US/USSR and Rome/Veii-- or that the US will start 'nation building' conquests, but interesting paralles could be made. Fun stuff.

Actually, my company sells portal software. We integrate all sorts of feeds. Pretty slick product, you can see a live demo of the product @: www1.jerseyinsight.com
...or portaltestdrive.ca.com (yeah, yeah, yeah, CA horror stories, I know.)
But we can use RSS, XML, HTML, etc. and parse it in to customized 'Workplaces' for users.
