This is first quarter so jan-mar, it doesn't include SSFIV (which obviously made a lot of money.) They didn't release anything good in that quarter so profits were low. I can guarantee you profits for 2nd quarter will be way up.

I wouldn't get too excited about this one, Relic has had some massive bug problems in their games lately. Its probably a better play to wait a few months and get something like this on sale or used (for the console.)

Yes, people are crazy about CoD right now, but that doesn't mean CoD can get away with doing whatever it wants. There is competition out there. CoD's gameplay is nothing spectacular. They just crammed leveling into an FPS and people went nuts over it. Its something competition can easily replicate. You add a monthly fee for online play and you give people a reason to go to your competition. We've already seen BC2 targeting PC CoD players offering the dedicated servers MW2 didn't have. They were quite successful here.

On top of that, a lot of the CoD players started in single player and tried out multi-player because they want more. You toss a barrier like a monthly fee in there and people will think twice before paying that monthly fee. Some will pay it, some won't, but you have reduced your online player base. A major part of CoD's success was its momentum and gravity due to the large player base.

There are a lot of stupid gamers out there begging to be exploited, just like their are a lot of people with horrific taste in music. These masses can be fickle and once you lost them to competition they are hard or impossible to get back.

If you want to collect a monthly fee build CoD: MMO edition. There is a market to be exploited, but you have to make sure "Why should I pay a monthly fee?" is answered in spades.

The game is dying fast, but I think they'll probably keep it around until The Old Republic emerges. It is kind of amazing how they managed to be worse than Age of Conan, which in itself was spectacularly bad.

I have to agree about the P2P issue. It is a massive stumbling block. Since they tend to use a step-lock system to limit vulnerabilities to hacks as soon as one player has frame rate issues everyone suffers immensely. They are so afraid of offending players with lower end machines that they fail to implement anything to stop one player from destroying a game with lag and the game degenerates into a total mess.

The end result is the game has to force everyone to run on minimum settings (many C&C games end up doing this for matchmaking play) or the game ends up a disaster. This isn't an EA problem either, literally every single RTS except the ones from Blizzard do this crap.

What a lot of them don't seem to understand is that they have to be worth the subscription fee they are asking. They all almost universally fail to be worth a subscription fee and the box price.

I wouldn't be surprised if RTW is buried by APB. It sounds like they haven't made money yet, most people will be done with this game in 1-2 months.

The general public doesn't read sites like this or follow this kind of thing unfortunately. They preorder Call of Duty 10: Future Warfare at Wal-mart or Gamestop and go get it on release day.

They'll eventually stop buying it. Either they get bored with it, something else gets their attention, or they finally realize they've been playing the same mediocre game for 6 versions now. Its like those crappy movies made by Friedberg and Seltzer (Scary Movie 4, Epic Movie ect.) It took a while but eventually people stopped going to see them.

The thing with appealing to the lowest common denominator is that eventually something else shiny gets their attention.

They destroyed good studios, caused talent to flee, and released poor games. It took quite a bit of time and competitors gaining in strength for them to really feel the impact of it. However, even after their attempts at reform they are still feeling the impact. The EA title makes a lot of gamers wary to purchase a game unless they know it is really good.

You see that with a lot of other games too, you make a crappy sequel and it will sell. However, future games released by that studio will take a hit, even if they are good.

I doubt Activision will ever see MW2 numbers again.

You play fighting games with an arcade stick (or for some people a pad.) The exact same sticks and pads that work on the Xbox work on the PC. In fact that's a major feature of the SFIV branded controllers. In fact the physical retail copies came with a Madcatz fight pad.

I would be nice if the PC version had cross platform play with the Xbox, like the BlazBlue PC version is going to have.

There are lots of crappy F2P games, but at the same time if you have a decent game there are a lot of people who are asking to be exploited. Blizzard made million off those $25 horses, people will sink dumb amounts of money into an MMO once they get attached to their characters.

Its much easier to just make your money via DLC on the consoles. If you want a digital only, no used copy service, both Xbox 360 and PS3 have something like that.

Of course they are shilling every latest thing like its a must have advancement, that's how they make money. You just upgrade when you need to. Early adopters tend to get screwed. I use a 720p LCD TV, an Xbox360, and a $1 HDMI cable (you can get them dirt cheap on Amazon or monoprice.com.) I never really felt "I must have Blu-ray" or "I must upgrade to 1080p."

You can get it for $15 used from a couple of places. Really, if you have a console, there is no sane reason to buy it for the PC. These games are designed for console and run better there.

The Asian gold farmers used to buy accounts to replace the ones that get banned. They've shifted to very aggressively hacking accounts and using them to farm gold instead. The number of hacked accounts is significantly on the rise.

It is much lower risk for them because they pay nothing for the account and if the account gets reclaimed or banned they reverse the charges for game time.

The other big difference, is they aren't relying solely on user error. They've begun exploiting the security of the companies that run the MMO too. A number of NCsoft accounts were taken over via security flaws in their website.

He's had a crazy Producers-esque thing going on with German tax law. The whole investment ends up a massive tax write-off and is an even bigger tax write off if it fails. I think they finally fixed the law a year or two ago.

I'm not so sure he's calling Hitman bad. He might be saying it was negatively affected by Uwe Boll's crap giving game movies a bad reputation. Its hard to tell, its not written that well and it seems he just wanted to cram as many links in as possible.

I agree that Hitman wasn't bad. Mortal Kombat was bad, but could be enjoyed in a "so bad it's good" kind of way. Hitman wasn't a great movie, but it could be enjoyed as an action movie. If you gave it a different name it would still be a watchable action movie.
