How everyone is acting as if Stalker premise is so new and innovative. Ever hear of Autoduel, Wasteland or seen movies like Mad Max, Road Warrior? Cheers to the Stalker to the for revitalizing a genre that even in the past was hardly touched.
Screw WW2 and anything D&D. Post apocalyptic end of the world topics are so fitting for todays REAL world with the war and proven global warming. We are so close, closer than ever before, to actually realizing a bleak reality on this planet. Let a game show us that, it all its grim glory, so that we can see, just maybe, what we are all putting at stake here.
Earth.

Anything from the former Looking Glass company, former Origin (Pre EA), Bethesda games.
Those are the only companies I can think of that do games for the love of gaming.

Sure is taking a big chance! Reminds me of the Apple IIe days where it was all fun and innovation, money came secondary. As opposed to today when we get a winner type of game (Doom let's say) there will be 10-50 clone type games (Duke Nukem, Half Life, Chrome etc.) and some that really shine that are clone like such as Counter Strike.
So Stalker is taking big risks, is hitting a niche market, and better be good, not damn good (that would be asking too much) but good, and trying not to please 13 year olds and 45 year olds.
Bioshock would be another in this category. Big risk taker.
Here's an A for effort, an A++ for taking the risk (hint hint EA!) and praying that this game is good and sells well!

Not sure why anyone would have bought this card in the first place. Unproven DX10 tech, first gen, you guys should no better.
Good going Blue on nailing Tweakboy. You have been redeemed since I was pissed off on the uncloseable forced adverts you previously used.

What if it came with a Salma Hyack Real Doll? To add more incentive, none of it's holes are "locked" either and the voice module was removed?
Hmmm? Any takers?

Apple has pulled another tactic that rapes the consumer. Think Different? I don't think so. Closed standards and forced contracts! Why the fuck do cell companies get away with ANY contracts at all? I can understand 90-180 days sure, but 1-2-3 year contracts?
This device will be WAY out of range for most people, and I really don't think it will take off at all. Far too expensive alone, and the 2 year contract, while people already have a contract, will be icing on the cake (made of 100% dog shit mind you).
So sick of arrogant apple. Sure you can be part of the Apple culture, but you must:
1. Make over 95k+ a year 2. Be white or asian 3. Drive a VW or Mini Cooper 4. Purchase worn out, new, over priced clothes 5. Shop at the Gap only 6. Think that all other computers suck, Apple invented everything, and think Steve Jobs is cool!
F that club!

Untrue. I don't recall playing Dig Dug 8 hours a day, every day, for months on end. Every now and then I would slip in and play a game, more when it was new, less as it's charm wore off.
Apples and oranges, the only thing you can say they had in common were that they are electronic entertainment devices, one designed for the quick attention grab, the other for the addict.

That is ridiculous. That many nerds out there with nothing better to do in life than pay to play a treadmill game?
I hate the way MMO's have no ending, and are clearly designed to extract money out of you and get you hooked. I think when people reach their 30's these kinds of games really don't appeal anymore. We tend to see through it too quickly. I can understand a month or two, of which you would pretty much see and do everything, but years?
F That!

If we don't stop this type of customer mistreatment, nickle and diming our asses to Oblivion (pun intended), then it will become the norm.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to justify this type of selling method, especially when the publisher is EA. Last time I checked EA was being sued for the abuse of it's employees and is a BILLION dollar company.
In game advertisement. Monthly fee's.
What the fuck is next with these greedy pricks?

Lawyers have put a strangle hold on this fucking country. If you ever go through the legal system, and I hope to god you never do, you will be scared shitless and realize that the person with the most money wins.
My experience has just been utter chaos. Now I know why people run when the cops come around. You are always guilty, unless you are a millionaire.

Hahahaa, please. Linux as a gaming platform.... hehehee, HAHAHAAAAA!
They can't even get fucking printers to work correctly on the oldest OS out there. Linux had it's chance, but with 400 flavors of it (no joke) and no body able to set any god damn standards, Linux will be best known as a Web Server, FTP Server and Database.
Anything else is just laughable. Great driver support and compatibility! Not to mention it's ease of use!
Joke.

I see they still have women in these games with sexy, non effective armor, kicking ass. Maybe they can add a rap metal rythmic tune to it as well, classic EA style?
Talk about pulling every friggin cliche move you can.
And the CGI animations completely rip off the anime movie Vampire Hunter D - Blood Lust

Not true, as I had played several MMo's before on AOL (Neverwinter etc). I too played doom coop over a modem when it came out.
System Shock 2 was my fav coop game, and the new doom 3 with the great coop mod is FAR better than my original doom coop experience, which was great btw.
So, no, UO wasn't the first, but it did it best in my opinion. If you have no value or nothing to lose on your character, your decisions are decided already.
Take for instance the Battle Field series. You die, you lose a ticket, big deal. Now if they had something where the longer you lived the larger the point bonus, or you only get 3-5 lives and have to wait the rest of the round out. That would really change the dynamic of the game BIG time.
Oh, i had one. If your team loses, you get NO points. That would force idiots to join a team/squad and get their shit together.

Ultima Online |

I think the only MMO that did allow the most free form play was Ultima Online, the initial 6-9 months, where you could way lay people and there were safety in numbers.
Unfortunately, people turned instantly to the evil side, as they do in real life, where it was far easier to destroy, steal, maim and taunt rather than create, give, heal and compliment.
I was in a guild that played the game at EA so we had a killer T3 line while everyone else used modems or the first interaction of DSL. Basically we had a huge advantage. We were in the office, about 12 of us upstairs and down, used our phone systems and hands free headsets, aforementioned T3 lines... basically what we all use now we had the luxury of then.
So we added a sense of humor. We were all males, had female characters, wore bright colored outfits, acted gay (sometimes) and made people laugh. We would give our old loot to people starting out, showed people around, destroyed evil groups, got all kinds of recognition and praise. People knew us, loved us, it was quite fun.
Then one day we met our match, a typical dress all black group in black armor went against our colorful group. They used house exploits where we couldn't target them, but they could target us (much like BF2142 Titan mode where you can hide in the walls).
Needless to say, after an enormous battle, we were winning. I casted an Earthquake area effect spell that pretty much drains you completely. Due to a bug in the game, I hit and killed 3 enemies and 2 friendlies. In a blink of an eye my character went from pure good blue to as low red evil as possible.
Due to my frustration, and a bit of boredom being good guys, our group decided to turn pure evil. We would use our remaining good character to lure in good and bad characters and slaughter everyone. We became the scourge of the Pacific Server. We did this for about 3 months, and one day the ENTIRE servers, hundreds of people, hunted us down, used an exploit (Lightning would crash all players on screen, but not those on the outside of the screen) and they beheaded us all (literally). I have a picture of us on my system, quite a memorable experience.
Everything else hasn't had this impact. Sure WOW is better looking, but doesn't have that danger that we experienced in UO where when you go outside, you would get snuffed by real people.
It's all about money and ease of use these days. Who cares about substance.
Just like Americans.

Regardless of the maker, eventually games will go to the consoles, unless MS wishes to turns things around. (Which they seem to be doing with Games For Windows)
The DX10 initiative and Vista may help by making the 360 and PCGames a little bit more one and the same. Certified drivers and hardware may prolong the decline towards consoles, or the continuing trend of consoles becoming more and more expensive with less and less incentive to get one, may in and of themselves terminate the trend to embrace the console systems.
With the PS3 at $600, and games $50-70 a pop, PC's which can do far more than games, are looking better and better. I have seen decent PC's at $500-700 and with a savvy computer person, piracy is always an option, thus circumventing most of the cost to own a PC over a console (that could change in the very near future.)
It is hard to say where this gaming industry will go. Me, being at 36 years of age, have a very particular taste now. I am no longer impressed with just graphics and expect games to stimulate me intellectually more and more. With consoles, they really do try to reach the lowest common denominator.
Call me racist, but when games are aimed at children and minorities who are just being introduced to games and computers today in 2006/2007, where people my age were into games in 1979 (Atari, Intellivision, Coleco, Commodore 64, Apple IIe) are well on our way to not only enjoying more intellectually challenging games, people my age are the ones making the games. To be asked to "dumb down" a game such as say, Stalker, to make way for a game such as Doom 3, really tells me something. All the game companies want are money.
The game companies have no intention of creating games such as System Shock 2 which really push the artistic boundaries of games, even if they are minor, but don't sell well, because today's kids and minorities don't have the mental capacity (yet) to appreciate patience in any form of art. Whether that be games, music, painting, movies, plays etc. It is hard to resist this "market" because kids and minorities are the ones most easily duped into parting with their cash.
I will leave the gaming industry not because of consoles, but because of sheer boredom and the lack of intellectual stimulus.
I am sure the younger generation will jump all over my minorities statement, but let me ask you this. When was the last time you heard of a black or mexican programmer? This is not to devaluate these people, but to put things in perspective. Then I ask you something different. What is the percentage of these people in the consumer force (Target, Walmart etc). They are a force to be reckoned with financially, to ignore them would be folly.

Use two collocations in different states, half the servers, half in the other with pointers mixed for the client.
Isn't rocket science. But it is expensive.
The real problem is steam match making. The good ol days of "insert ip address of server" are gone and not usually a choice anymore in games. Sucks.
