Lost Sleep Can Lead to Weight Gain. Interesting article, although the amount of calories burned seems insignificant (100-130 in a day), on a weekly scale that is the difference in having an extra meal or snack. Ignoring the science in the article, on a more common sense level people who sleep less are probably more likely to skip physical activities due to their general fatigue levels. Gaining weight is a bit of a vicious cycle, people tend to treat emotional problems with food which leads to more of the same due to guilt, stigmatization and negative feelings associated with being overweight. Great encapsulation.

Speaking of weight gain... |

| How does Legendary skill work? Is it now equal to 101, but just set at 15? So if you get it back to 100, it will be essentially 185? None of my Skyrim chars are at 100 skill yet. |

But it will never happen again. Oh, yeah, I remember playing Elite Force, that was pretty cool, even though you killed more aliens than in all of the Star Trek shows combined. Haven't played the others, but have read that some people swear by Bridge Commander. I'll probably check out Excalibur when it is finished. |

Great, great game. I have a few nits with the design (tech tree could have been deeper, no base invasions), but had a ton of fun with it. |

C'mon Cutter, it's not THAT bad. It looks better than A:CM, for example. Okay, actually, it doesn't. Still, I kind of like the re-imagined Gorn. But muddy textures, 3rd person gameplay, and floaty looking action are big put-offs.
When are we going to get a REAL Star Trek game, with all the nuance and options that the series portrays? |

| This is a very interesting development. It's like Steam's answer to Kickstarter, but with no go/no go goal. The remarks don't seem to indicate whether the feedback will be restricted to purchasers only. Currently, Steam forums are totally open. You'd think that the devs would want to restrict the forums only to people who purchased the game. |

Darks wrote on Mar 20, 2013, 11:52: Most of the games pirated are by people who had no intention of ever buying a game. And yes there are some who would buy if it was not easy to pirate it. But the publishers are to busy blaming pirates for their own failures on making a game that’s worth buying. How many times have many of us been burnt by a bad game? I can’t even count how many times over the past 15 years. You can't say "Most people who pirate games had no intention of ever buying." That's just as bad as publishers saying "Every pirated game is a lost sale." That's exactly Refenes' point.
However, as studies on price elasticity have shown, almost everyone has their price. The fact that they're spending time and bandwidth to torrent and play the game in the first place means the game has a certain value to them. The person who would never buy a game in the first place is the person who is never going to torrent one, because that's a person who doesn't care about games at all.
Which means, actually, publishers are right that piracy leads to lost sales. It might not lead to a $60 sale, but it could be a $20 or $5 sale. When the price is cheap and value is added through services like steam, sales are made. This is supported both anecdotally and empirically.
This is in no way an argument in favor of DRM as a solution to the problem. But it's important to realize that publishers aren't acting out of deluded fantasy, even though the "cure" of DRM hurts the patient as much as the "sickness" of piracy.
As for being burnt by a bad game, you have only yourself to blame. That's what demos and reviews and Blues News commenters are for. Using try-before-you-buy as a justification for torrenting is simply rationalizing illegal behavior. |

Fion wrote on Mar 20, 2013, 15:28: There have been short games I felt I got my moneys worth, Limbo for example. And other games folks reported to be real short that I found not short at all because of how engrossed I was. For example Dishonored. Folks run through that in a matter of hours but I enjoyed exploring and trying different options, I ran through the whole game three times to experience it in different ways. So while for some it may have been a 4 hour game, for me it lasted dozens of hours because I was immersed and having a blast. I have 33 hours played and that includes zero DLC. Me, too. When people tell me they finish HL2 in four hours, I ask "How??!" It took me well over a dozen hours to get through that the first time. Each time I've played Oblivion, I've put in 40 hours, and only gotten through about a third of the story each time. |

The only games that really feel short are the SP shooter campaigns. The reason they are shorter than the past is due to the incredibly high cost of creating unique environments these days. To make HL3 the same length as HL2 using, say, the Crysis 3 engine would cost many times more today. Will they sell many times more? If market research shows that they will not, then they make as short a game they think they can get away with and still make money.
There are lots of strategies to get around the high cost of art assets these days. RPGs do it by offering multiple quests in the same area, allowing multiple playthroughs with different kinds of characters (wizard play different than knight play). Randomization is another, both of mobs and environments (Diablo 2). Another way is to go with a simpler, stylized art style, like Borderlands. |
