I'm betting id signed some (hidden?) agreement with Microsoft that only the Xbox version could have Coop, which was my original thinking with Bungie and Halo. /tinfoil Yeah, it was too difficult to overcome the problems of making a multiplayer, coop mode for the the technical-gurus at id and Bungie. Right? /sarcasm

This isn't new information |

Unless you've been asleep for the past 6-12 months, this isn't new information. Obviously, many here have been ignoring the posts about these details regarding the SP game or didn't bother to go the Steam web site to find out the information for themselves. If they had, they would have learned the very same information months ago. You must connect to Steam to validate your CDkey (or whatever) the first time you install and each time you reformat.
As for me, I'm not buying HL2 until I see some reviews. I got burned buying Doom 3 when it first came out and I'm still forcing myself to finish. I'll wait to see what the forums are saying and what rating Computer Games Magazine gives it (they gave D3 3.5/5 stars, which I think is pretty fair). If HL2 looks good, I'll purchase and then download the inevitable hack so I don't have to install Steam as I have no interest in MP.
One thing I'm still trying to find from those who use Steam is whether your download directory (the directory with the dot-qcf files) is the same as your install directory. In other words, do you effectively have two complete copies of every game on your system (i.e. double the hard drive space, which would be yet another reason not to use Steam)?

Oh, the irony of this game being developed by a German studio in Germany no less--a country with a history of censoring games. I wonder if they'll offer up the chance to be a Holocaust survivor. /sarcasm

Interestingly (probably only to me), this topic is cutting a little bit close to home today, as I was forced to announce an unavoidable delay to one of my clients, and tensions with regard to this project are already high enough. A minor shit-storm ensued, and then we all realized that these things happen... Is that you Mr. Newell? Sorry. Couldn't resist.

Re: Archiving from Steam |

Okay, based on what I've read here and on the Steam forums here is a list of the steps I think a person needs to perform to pay 'n play HL2 (on Day #1) using Steam and end up with a backup archive of the game. Feel free to tear my list apart.
1) Download Steam 2) Install Steam 3) Purchase HL2 4) Download HL2 via Steam 5) Install HL2 6) Backup SteamApps folder to CD/DVD 7) [Delete HL2 files from SteamApps folder *see below*] 8) Play HL2
* Step 7: This is the step I thought might raise some eyebrows. I know the SteamApps folder contains the installation data and is functionally equivalent to install CDs so the obvious conclusion is the game gets installed to a different location, right? Basically, that means HL2 is on the HDD twice, right? Yes, HDD are cheap but do I really want/need to have data for a game I already have installed still lying around on my drive. Anybody? I know. I should probably go post this on the Steam Users Forum.

Many people here have posted thoughts along the lines of "I want an actual box, CD/DVD, etc" and will buy the game via the regular old brick and mortar retail channel.
I'm one of those brick-n-mortar guys not so much because I like the idea of having an actual CD--though admittedly it is a big reason--but because I don't want to have to install Steam for all the typical reasons listed. However, given this latest news, if Steam were to provide some way to burn HL2 (and all their other games) to CD after downloading it would go a long way in convincing me (and potentially many others) to purchase Valve products over Steam. I've been following the threads on HL2 and Steam for a bit now so if the ability to burn a game to CD is available in Steam please let me know. Having a CD and knowing you don't have to spend the time downloading the game again after your HD crashes is worth the peace of mind, in my opinion.

Riker:
Point your browser to http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner and download Driver Cleaner. Before switching to a different version of an ATI Catalyst Driver, you this utility to completely remove your existing ATI Catalyst Driver before installing the new version. The tool cleans up the registry, removes old drivers from the Windows systems directory and eliminates a few other evil steps. See the README file for additional info. A rather painless process. The utility also supports nVidia drivers...

Uh, compiled C and C++ isn't the "closet" thing to true machine code, it is true machine code.
On another note, how can I determine what version of the .NET Framework I have installed?

First time poster, long time reader.
Uh, I got nothin' to say.
Edit: Seriously...it's marketing. They simply want to keep HL2 and Valve in the headlines.
