7. Re: The Division Engine Trailer Dec 8, 2013, 18:01 Yosemite Sam

Definitely looks stunning, I suspect that wasn't rendered on a console though. I had to chuckle when she said "never before has a video game reached this level of detail" marketing psycho babble, PC side has seen this level of detail for years. Of course most games are created for the lowest common denominator, nice to see that bar has been raised, significantly. Heh, I know game play is more important then graphics, but I can't help myself, I'm such a graphics whore.

... and not sure if it has been posted here but I watched this show on Discovery the other day about technology developments in CGI. They are working on a technology akin to motion capture but at a much much higher level of detail, like skin pore level of detail. This would completely eliminate the need to manually create people for video games. Jumps in technology like that will allow game devs to increase GFX quality while at the same time lowering production time and costs.

EDIT ... and they seemed totally focused on people, but as far as I could tell that would work for any 3D object. No need to pay an artist for hours of labor creating objects, just stick any object in there you want and voila an extremely highly detailed rendering in minutes.

While the tanks look better than world of tanks, the combat still looks decidedly arcade with tanks firing at point blank range... although I am only making that judgement from the trailer. Point blank or close range tank combat happened, but typically did not, at least for most German anti-tank specialists/aces, they engaged at very long-range.

From what I understand is that War Thunder has difficulty settings, so you can turn up the difficulty to max realism when flying planes and on servers.

If they have difficulty settings for the tank portion, then it would be worth it. I want full realism. And how is the tank portion integrated into the main game, are there people fighting on the ground at the same time planes are flying above? Can planes attack the tanks? Because I would LOVE to fly a Stuka-G1 and take out T-34's.

Yup that's the whole sell on this game, everyone is on the same battlefield, and AFAIK there are objectives to complete so the ground people and flyboys will have to cooperate to complete mission objectives. Once ships get included it should be quite interesting and hopefully a blast.

It sure would be nice if tanks get the same 'realism' that the aircraft does. Ballistics and armor penetration would be sweet, can you flank and get a one shot kill in the ass or waste rounds bouncing them off of the frontal armor plates, or do they just have "health" I've said it before and I'll say it again, RO had the best armor combat physics I've ever seen in any game, and it was friken sweet... the vid did for a second show you looking down the sights with range indicators in the view, whether or not it's just cosmetic...

I had thought about downloading this but then started reading Steam discussion threads and thought better of it. "US Fighters aren't as maneuverable!!!" Then don't fight so that turn rate and radius determine the outcome? Tactics and energy fighting, what? If the community thinks air combat is about pointing your nose at the enemy and squeezing the trigger... well it doesn't sound like a very interesting environment lol.

War Thunder is not your average action game. You need to use the fighters the way they were designed to be used. US fighters can turn fight, but against the more manouverable German or British birds they are at a disadvantage. Its Boom and Zoom for them if you want to win. They are more powerful, faster, and have a better climbing rate. If you dont like that style then simply use the more manouverable fighters, but dont diss the game for trying to bring variation and actual tactics into the mix. It only makes you look pathetic.

Ya actually it's your reading comprehension skills that are pathetic. I clearly understood that SMA knows about fighter tactics and was referring to the other people on War Thunder.

Seriously. It's starting to make sense why InBlack liked The Hobbit movie.

SMA, I wouldn't take the steam forums as a complete representation of the quality of players on War Thunder. Sure most will probably be like that, but I know from my time in the PS3 BoS and BoP community that there are a group of dedicated flight sim folks out there who do play. Not sure how War Thunder works but if it allows people to choose who they play with I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the quality of players you can find out there.

Maybe I'll give it a download then. IL-2 is certainly getting long in the tooth at this point, but the community is still so active and strong, and still so full of very competent and tactically astute opponents, that I've been reluctant to try a game that seems so... gamey, particularly with Plane Tiers and leveling and unlocks and what not.

I've never played WT so I'm not sure if they have dumbed it down. I'm basing the flight models on Gaijins other games that I have played and those flight models were very realistic. I would assume the tiers and unlocks are all there to push people into spending money. Heh I've no doubt that the quality of opponents in IL-2 far far exceeds the general WT population, but I'm sure you can find good aviators in WT... seem to remember you can select difficulty levels in WT, so if you choose realistic I would assume those players know how to fly.

... now I'm getting the itch to fly, think I'll have to fire up BoS again.

Should be a pretty decent game for the PS4. Will probably give it a go on the PC once they have finished getting ground and sea units implemented... still pissed at them for abandoning Birds of Steel, is an awesome WW2 flight sim for the PS3, but it did need patching.

Guys, take your pointy tin foil hats off. How did they get the information that she had mental health issues? They googled her. You can to - look up her name: Ellen Richardson.

Or maybe you prefer to believe that the NSA hacked into Canada's healthcare database and then turned the info over to customs.

Also: I hear that there never was a Soviet Union, much less a fall of the eastern block. It's a lie perpetrated by evil capitalists meant to discredit the virtues of communism.

The real story here is how stupid some people can be by spewing info like that all over the internet and then be surprised that the government can in fact use public search engines. And then there is the fact that apparently no one else uses a search engine - they just take it for granted that some reporter is not trying to slant the story.

Are you really going to stand by that total load of crap? Are you really suggesting boarder agents google people? They actually google someones name on the fucking internet!? I really have to ask, have you ever used google!?, ever? You really think an agent is going to sit there and sift through pages and pages of internet crap to verify someones history and identity? Only stupid person here is the one who actually believes that load of shit. He accessed a government database, period... and WTF does the USSR have to do with it?

U.S. Customs and Border Protection media spokeswoman Jenny Burke said that due to privacy laws, "the department is prohibited from discussing specific cases."

They're taking the piss...

I was just going to quote that. Apparently those privacy laws aren't in effect when you go snooping through someone's medical records? Especially when said someone isn't an American citizen, so how the fuck did you get access to their records to begin with?

US Government grills medical providers about HIPAA; ignores HIPAA itself.
US Government grills every single legitimate buyer about software piracy; pirates software itself.

The pattern is becoming nicely clear.

That pattern has been clear for decades, at least to people who live outside the states, been pretty much the US foreign policy since the 60s.

Well Casino was pretty much expected considering the building is in the game with a big sign saying opening soon. Indoor race track is a surprise, I assume they will be opening the big stadium down by the port, nice. Racing for pink slips, ya guess it'll be something for the money glitches to do, highly doubt anyone who has earned their money legitimately is going to risk all that work on one race... though I suppose it could be used as a way to give one of your cars to a friend.

EDIT hmm listening to the audio files sounds like you'll also be able to buy money generating properties (online?) and also sounds like you'll be able to run drugs and weapons in free roam.

EDIT Borderlands 2 and Grid 2 to hit instant game collection next month for PSN+, sweet.

Here's what the mainstream media thinks of video games

You know nothing Jon Snow.

A person who cannot see or understand another point of view outside of their own world view. Had a relative once give me the whole grow up video games are for kids routine. This person then proceeded to tell me how great this soap opera they watch is. Just like the old geezer in the video who cannot fathom that video games are simply just entertainment. He doesn't find it entertaining so therefore it must have a beneficial impact in order to justify it. I'm quite sure whatever he enjoys wasting time on seems quite justified and needs no other explanation other then he enjoys it.

Uh, the "dedicated fans" don't wait for DLC prices to drop below 15 dollar, which they are definitely worth (They're not worth the 15 dollars if you compare them to the grandiosity of the vanilla game but NO SHIT!!!!!).

Notice that I said the "more" dedicated fans. I didn't say the "most" dedicated fans. If I wasn't a dedicated fan, I would wait to buy it when the Legendary version went on sale for $7.50.

This is where I'm at. Do I wait until I can get the whole package on the cheap or just grab the vanilla game now. Thing for me is, will I ever play the DLC. Hearthfire looks like something I'd use on my play through but the other two would probably never get used. This is what happened to me with FNV, waited until I got the whole thing on the cheap, sunk over a hundred hours into the vanilla game then stopped playing. Same with Oblivion and Fallout 3, by the time I was done with the vanilla games I was done... though TBH I did start one of the DLCs for FNV and it sucked.

I'll say one thing about the Hobbit movie, that scene with the battling rock giants was stupid, way over the top, and pointless. A simple rockslide would have done the job. Not a big fan of the whole miracle fall down the crevice after the big goblin battle either. Was beginning to wonder if Lucas got his hands on it Otherwise I enjoyed the movie, it does feel a little weird though, seeing as Smaug has pretty much become a sub plot in a story where the dragon is supposed to be the main plot.
