News Comments > Half-Life 2 Gold
114. Re: DoD:S Preload Oct 18, 2004, 17:00 CK

Just a point of information, mine and several other people from various forums' Steam monitor window claimed to have completed preloading DOD:S at my end as of the 14th. However I can't find any obvious files on disk that correspond to it so not sure if it was just being buggy or not.

I'm inclined to think its probably just being buggy, or at most some shared textures or summit had been downloaded.

News Comments > No Vampire Multiplayer

I agree with the comments made that Vampire should stick with creating a good SP experience rather than bolt on a mediocre MP mode at the expense of other things. That is very true.

What would the folk demanding MP be more dissapointed at - the game shipping with a poor MP mode, causing people to go back to Counterstrike or whateverm or the game being delayed for 6-12 months for the additional coding, tweaking, balancing and playtesting required to produce a good MP experience?

Ah..must have put the price up - when I pre-ordered a few months ago it was only 17.99... still cheap mind.

I think in principle Steam is a great idea for distributing software, however I have never used it to purchase a game simply because the titles available are too expensive. If I can pre-order Halflife 2 for 17.99 (around $30) from Play, and get a physical CD and manual to put on a shelf, what could possibly persuade me to pay closer to $50 dollars for the same game on Steam? Especially since I would need to download probably over a Gig of data myself (probably at least a day ... more likely 2+ on my cable modem). It is both cheaper and less of an interruption on your broadband connection (ie. you can still continue downloading porn and videos of people falling over).

As for the HL2/Vivendi situation.. its just insane, and if it goes on much longer they will piss off any remaining fans and look like even more of a joke...

News Comments > DOOM 3 Trailer

Well, the engine itself is very impressive. Have been playing SP a bit and it certainly is atmospheric, tad repetitive after a while mind (walk down corridor... zombie jumps out.. kill zombie..repeat and rinse). I like the PDA you have, and the level of interaction with environment.

Multiplayer (yes... it seems to work - I was surprised too) seems interesting, netcode seems to be slight improvement on Q3 however 4 player limit is a shame if you prefer big battles, but as someone has said id/modders will be changing this.

Well worth a purchase when it is available in stores (and yes - my copy is apparently prepping for dispach at play.com).
