It's sad that "success" has to focus on the margins.

I get it, not wanting to hurt your company's reputation, but you don't want to be the next Square-Enix do you, Blizzard?

What happened to vision and courage in game design?

I enjoyed it. I have reservations about some aspects of the game and wish I had more time to play it but this sums it up for me

Seeing how well NS2 went... idunnoman

NS2 is a fun game... for me, and a good bunch of other folks.

Not everything has to be a mainstream title.

Making a game that appeals to a niche audience isn't anything bad/wrong/etc.

I am one of those people who played NS1 for about 7 years.. a couple years competitively. So I am a bit disenfranchised and deservedly so.

An underwater game, SeaQuest anyone?, would be very fun and just what UWE needs to get from underneath the rock they built that is NS2.

Last time I checked, my copy of WC2 battle.net edition works pretty good.. sans modem-to-modem multiplay.

Explore a vast range of experiences that allow you to play your way. Be the lone wolf to take control of your own destiny or work together in tight-knit five-man squads to strike as a team. New maps, more vehicles, weapons and destruction allow you to create your own path and play to your strengths. Absolutely nothing compares to the sheer scale and scope of Battlefield 4.

the same thing could be said about bf3.... hmmm

http://unknownworlds.com/ns2/ns-survey-results-2/

This was seven years ago. I remember specifically reading this when it came out and it has been engraved in my head, as a NS1 player for all those years:

This feedback has reaffirmed my belief that NS2 should be roughly 1/3 the same, 1/3 improved and 1/3 new. That's the general rule of thumb developers tend to use when creating successful sequels and I think that goes for us too. I have a lot more confidence committing to some of the basic gameplay elements in NS2 now, so it's full speed ahead.

I believe the ratio of this "golden rule" has been ignored... and are tipping the scales.

There was a survey posted to the community that preceded the development of NS2. The essay portion is very interesting

People also took the time to write long feedback in the "essay" portion of the survey. The general feedback was generally:

- People like the game as is (obviously, if most respondents have been playing for four years!)
- Don't change the game too much for the sequel (except update the graphics)
- More developer information, site updates and progress transparency
- Longer games, more game modes
- Reduce the learning curve
- More community involvement and tighter integration

In case Patrick Bach needs to be translated..

"What would have been one fully featured game in the past, we milked Battlefield 3 for all it's worth and used DLCs as breadcrumbs. After two years, we want to release something just new enough to get your attention; breadcrumbs and all."
