News Comments > Gears of War PC?
17. Re: w00t May 24, 2005, 14:22 MachineMk2

Hey! Don't knock boob physics! Or skirt physics...there's a whole generation of physics engines that have advanced purely for those reasons.

My money (I'm just looking @ what EBGames is saying, even though some have incorrect dates) is on DOA 4, Condemned: Criminal Origins, PGR3, and Kameo for good release games. At least, the "buzz" from E3 seems to be with these titles.

Besides...they're 59.99 (except DOA 4 which may be an error) so I only need 1 or 2 decent launch titles. But you won't get that...OH NO...they'll bundle it with 4 or something. And I'll care about maybe 2 of them, and get 2 others I'd never have touched...like Top Spin 2 or something.

It strikes me as a risky strategy to me. If I was an X Box fan I'd want a conclusive reason to upgrade, and Halo 3/GOW in spring '06 would be a great reason not to until then.

Well, the GOW release date is supposedly JAN '06. If that holds, that's a scant month or so after XBOX 360 comes out (and there very well may be some really decent release titles...who knows?). Not like M$ doesn't have the resources to accelerate that if it really looks like it will sell consoles...BUT, as far as games go, M$ has been really good about letting their in-house devs take their time.

And HALO 3 looks to be Spring/Summer...so that could be a good couple months (or more) after GOW.

But that's all so subjective...I mean, who knows? We're talking 3 seperate release dates that all may or may not happen (although I think Xbox 360 is probably a lock for November/December).

As for J Allard...he's focused on XBOX 360 and a three continent release in 6 months. I doubt he's real focused on whether GOW will be developed for the PC. Not to say he doesn't care, or that it's not a good idea...just probably under his radar.

7. Re: PS3 May 23, 2005, 17:05 MachineMk2

In all honesty Sony's claims, even with the PS2, always seem to be a bit far fetched. Remember how powerful the Emotion Engine was supposed to be? The other problem for Sony is that I don't even think they know what CELL can do. It's a nifty item, but whether it's the bext best thing to sliced bread is really still undecided. I can't blame them for saying it's "twice as powerful as XBOX360" though. It's purely PR and they had to do SOMETHING. Kind of funny because all the interviews from the XBOX 360 folks sound like they aren't particularly sure what the final specs (performance numbers) will be either...just that the released ones are minimums. Of course, what are they gonna say?! That and their DevKits were only running on one processor, if I am not mistaken. Wonder what Sony used to pre-render their games?

My bet is that Sony will get the edge on tech this generation. Well, I suppose that depends how many items they drop from the PS3 before release (didn't they do that with PSP too?). But I am not sure the games will look noticeably different. Think about it...the tech for both systems is coming from relatively the same generation. And don't forget, every "next-gen" tech component on the PS3 could create a problem with price. Especially, if it doesn't add some sort of fantastic benefit. Blu-Ray is a good example. Neat idea, and it'll be cool if it turns out to be the next media of choice (Sony has missed the boat on a lot of nest-gen media coices BTW). But will storage media really make a game more better? I don't know. Just rhetorical.

Example: Imagine if M$ releases HALO 3 and drops the price of XBOX 360 the day PS3 is released. That's gonna hurt. That's not my idea...I think I read it off of one of Blue's links. That may be a sound idea, it might not. But price could make a huge difference if you are getting a comparable product, despite power.

But hey, you never know, and it'll be fun to find out.

I want to see a remake of Tie Fighter or a Tie Fighter 2. That game was my favorite Star Wars game of all time.

Ya know...all they'd have to do is update it(well, whole new engine maybe) and I'd pony some $ up.

<sigh> I miss LucasArt's sims (and LucasFilm's sims for that matter).

Wait a second, how did you come to the conclusion that it's "not true 3D"?

See my post to the other nitwit below.

There are screenshots taken from different angles of the same battlefields, that means they have to be able to pan and rotate and zoom at will. That means it is "true 3D" -- or realtime 3D, as it were.

Again, seems to be stuck in a 2D plane. Not "true 3D".

Sigh. I don't even know where to begin with you.

Lighten up, Francis.

LucasArts may have a rep for rushing games out as of late, but they also published KotoR recently and a host of other good SW games throughout history, so to judge it without playing it first seems a little silly. If i had just said "damn, LucasArts, fuck it" before playing KotoR i would have missed an extremely good game. Same goes for XWing, Tie-Fighter, Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, Rogue Squadron, etc, etc.

It's easy to remember the good ones, eh? We seem to forget the litany of games that LucasArts has released that aren't quite classics (Force Commander anyone?). LucasArts problem isn't that they make consistantly crappy games. The problem is the opposite, you never know what you are gonna get from them. It could be great, it could suck. Hence, I am going to be tempted by something nifty from them, but I am gonna wait to see if it is the real deal.

People make bad games. Fact is, Lucas is just a publisher, they generally use 3rd party developers.

You're not entirely correct here either. LucasArts (and LucasFilms before that) is a developer as well. They license the Star Wars stuff to a lot of devs and publish it, but they used to have in-house development (not sure if that's still the case but it was as of 2002). Also, even as a publisher, they haven't exercised a great deal of quality control over their license.

That has been different with KOTOR (I'd debate KOTOR II...fun game, but missing in places)...but they haven't built up enough credit with me to forget some of the stuff they've released.

Has Petroglyph ever made a Star Wars game? No. So perhaps we should take the "wait and see" approach, eh?

YOU can do whatever it is you want. But why don't WE try and have a discussion about it, or, if you don't want to, don't post.

Not true 3D??

What kind of stupid baseless comment is that? It has one of the most powerful and detailed 3D engines of any RTS to date.

Before you make comments that make you look like an asswad, do a little googling.

Wow. So much hostility. You must have a lot invested in this game. Or your 5 and think that somehow the anonymity of typing at your mom's computer lets you think you are a badass. Growing up is gonna be tough on you. Might wanna get your blood pressure checked too...that kind of response just isn't healthy.

Now, since I need to clarify for the youngster here, all the descriptions I have seen have fixed camera angles in a 2D plane despite having 3D objects. Therefore, not true 3D. If it's yet to be determined, I really hope they go with the ability to move off-plane in the space environments. Otherwise, I think it might just be eye-candy and lack the S in RTS.

...I really want this game to be good...but...

1) Most RTS seem to lack an original thought.

2) LucasArts.

3) Not true 3d.

Its [SIC] bloody hard to make a computer game on your own without EA et al behind you.

It's harder when you are a no talent hack who pisses on the same people he needs to be successful.

Don't worry...once you know the whole story you won't be so quick to defend him.

DNF? Sort of a funny...but at least THAT company has a decent track record, well, maybe 'had'.

What I DO know - and that which is proven and consistent - is that I have progressed over the years, improved on that which I created etc. While, well, all of you are just the same crochety, stagnant, inconsequential people you always were.

Well, when you can't give your game away I suppose there's only so many ways to measure success.

Point taken. I was just talking about the original, Nintendo 64 and GC. Never messed with Gameboy.

Basically the gamecentric.com (I can't connect to it now either) article was quoting a source saying that today Nintendo would reveal some pretty juicy stuff...including a "HALO killer". <shrug>

IGN has a new article up with pics of old-style controller ports, under a cover on top, for backwards compatibility (apparently the new, wireless controller will be too different to use with GC games). See, it's swell that Nintendo would do that, but that's sort of the other extreme for backwards compatibility...I don't think I like the ports and the cover and such. Ironically, this comes from a company that has NEVER been into backwards compatibility.

Actually, I'm prettty underwhelmed by the Revolution's appearence. It just looks like a CD/DVD-ROM drive. But then again, the looks of a console always seemed a silly way to judge them.

Dunno what everybody is getting worked up about. Backwards compatibility has always been a "nice" thing, but not something I ever considered absolutely necessary. Why? Well, it's not like I'm chucking my old console. Then again, it's not like I find myself going back and playing old console games a lot either. I admit to getting a Halo fix every now and then, but honestly, if it works on XBOX 360, great! If not? No big deal.

I also don't get folks who read as gospel console articles written for a site which bills itself as "First in IT sales and marketing".

Now...let's see if this Nintendo informant is full of it or not.

That article is pretty bad. I don't think the guy is a fan boy so much as he just didn't have a clue what he was looking at.

But I mean, Mac people don't have games, so how are they expected to tell the difference between in-game and cut-scene?

I always thought Nintendo was the "other" console to own. They have some great Nintendo-only stuff (Metroid/Zelda/Mariokart). And I admit, when GC hit $90 I picked it up just to play those three.

I did see something about a "squeezable" controller.

I wish them well, and I hope they come up with something neat, but I think they're going to have a pretty hard time this go.

Yeah. I mean, EA had nothing to do with the BF series BEFORE BF2, either. :0 Come on now.

Homeworld rocks! I used to love to make huge armadas and annihilate the enemy. Revolving the camera around the battle. The ION frigates ruled.

No no no. LucasArts doesn't want you doing that. You might hurt yourself.

They had me until...

We have our units on planes. It's a 3D world, but in terms of the camera angle, space battles won't feel too dissimilar to the ground battles. We don't want you spinning around on both axis and getting lost in the 3D world.
