User Information - Machine

The problem with Elite is we all love it for what it was. Unfortunately, I'm not so sure you could take those game elements and recreate it today. Elite benefited from being probably the first GTA of its time. It was completely open ended, and that in itself made for something new. Heck, I was playing Elite on an Apple IIe with a CH Mach 1 joystick (although...I think I might have started on keyboard) on a green monochrome monitor. Today...I think the X series comes close. My favorite modern day version was Indepedence War 2: Edge of Chaos. That was great...neutonian physics...fantastic game, but not without its problems. Unfortunatley, to make Elite today it'd have to be more of a simulator...but a simple one. Eve is more of a spreadsheet with pretty graphics (I have a special place in my heart for Eve, but it's not the same spirit of Elite). Elite was also, for lack of a better term, a very solitary experience. You were striving to be THE badass of the 8 galaxies... This comment was edited on Nov 17, 17:28.

Um. Jerykk. I think your point is that there'd be more quality FPS games for PC if consoles weren't around. And then you mention some stuff abotu demographics which I know you can't prove, because all the data suggests otherwise. But, all these people that blame consoles for the fall of the modern FPS...I don't think they get it. Money drives games. Not purists or fanboys. If you make a game that can sell 6 million copies because it's available for Xbox or PS3 and only 500,000 because it's available on PC. Who are you gonna make it for? AND blaming consoles for a handful of games that sucked is sort of sad. There are plenty of games that come out for PC that suck on their own accord, and have nothing to do with consoles.

I'd like there to be more MMORPG's for consoles. Live is ideally suited for it, but there don't seem to be any....well...at least none I seem to care about. Cool. I'm all about C&C coming to the 360. The series has been on consoles forever, going back to the original...didn't they make Dune 2 for the PS or PS2?

Um. Elite wasn't exactly the most complicated game BTW. I'm pretty sure a "dumbed down" console version would be about the same. And Braben's been talking this same thing for YEARS. Put-up or shut-up.

Meh. Don't hate the consoles. It is, get this, possible to like both consoles AND PC games. As for playing an FPS on a console, it worked for in in Halo and Metroid. Pretty sure I'll get by. Love the Richard Cheese links nin!

I really never thought it would come to this, but I rarely turn on my PC anymore for games (which means it just barely gets used at all anymore).. No doubt BioShock, EP2, Portal, and TF2 will change that for a few hours and days, but there's actually a lot more I'm jazzed about for the 360 lately. I hear that. I'll probably go with BioShock on Xbox though.

(I almost wish there was something worth playing on the 360 - as 100 off is huge! - and I ma lucky enough to have a Micro Center here - they have some good prices, and they always have that off beat shit no one else has - kind of like a beefed up and better radio shack) Gears of War my friend.

Meh. If anything the seperate HD-DVD prevents people buying the console solely as a media player. Something else that may be at play (although it's more likely everyone just bought PS3's in Japan to sell them on Ebay). There's no real good reason to bye an HD-DVD for an Xbox 360...just like I don't think there's any real good reason to have a Blu-Ray, other than you have to have one if you get a PS3. Both formats are probably decent, and all likelyhood is I'll end up with an HD-DVD drive during the holidays, BUT I still think they'll both end up dead formats at the foot of online delivery methods. LOL So, Sony's got this all figured out. The controller doesn't time-out so you drain the battery faster, so you have to go buy a new one, because you can't replace the battery. You think Sony hasn't figured that into their profit margins? Not a huge deal...but lame.

Gears of War has ruined me. I want all my games to look, and play, that good now. So, sad. As for the "pre-ordering" thing. Well, first, I wouldn't blame Gamestop, at least not entirely. Sony gave them numbers, Gamestop went out and signed up pre-orders for those numbers, Sony yanked the rug out from under them. One could argue Gamestop should have known better, but, whatever. Target's got it right. No preorders. First-come, first-serve. Then again, it will be a cold day in hell before I'm worried about buying a PS3. AND, as a complete aside, WTF ever happened to all the Sony fanboys, and many others, who were bitching and moaning about how big the original Xbox was? Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of automatch. So, I joined a clan. But, I would have done that anyway because I like playing with people around my age range and such. That'd be a nice filter on Live.
