Say what you want about their release, but you've got to give them credit for working past those problems and creating the game they wanted to make. I wish them success.

News Comments > Newell: Vista-Only DX10 "A Mistake"
32. Re: Everyone will probably hate me, but. Aug 28, 2007, 15:11 MMORPGHoD

I haven't seen anything yet that contradicted this article:

http://anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3029&p=3

Basically, we'll still need better video cards to ultimately see if DX10 will be worth anything visually. The current DX10 cards can't handle everything DX10 supposedly has to offer. And like Gabe said, the console video hardware can't handle what the current DX10 capable cards have now and therefore many cross platform devs won't care.. so I expect this to be a very slow process.

Than it makes you wonder whats he point of even bother with Vista if all the DX10 games gives you barely noticeable visual difference but about 20% on average performance hit.

QFT.

MS could have spent their vast resources on real improvements to PC gaming: significant boosts to both performance and visual quality over DX9. Instead, it would seem they spent the bulk of it on marketing Vista. I suppose they figured everyone would buy into it long before the real world comparisons came in.

But lucky XP users aren't missing much visually anyways. DX10 is mostly hype.

PC Gaming is here to stay, becoming dedicated WoW terminals if nothing else :).

It's a waste of taxpayer money. They should be teaching these kids how to read a real map, so that when they grow up they don't get into fights with their spouses over who can't follow driving directions. As more interesting test, I'd rather drop the testers off in the Middle of Saudi Arabia with one of those test maps and see what percentage of them get back alive.

The truth is these kids have access to more geographical knowledge than their parents ever did and they're more capable of accessing that knowledge than their computer illiterate parents. If you want them to memorize this useless information without the aid of the internet, then you're better off teaching them basic survival skills instead. Because the day a real map, the internet, or something better isn't around is the day we'll be back in the stone age anyways.

EDIT: On Bats US map test level 2 I got a 94%. I was a little rusty. In school we had to memorize all 50 states and their capitals. Needless to say it never came in handy.

Yup, and on the test map I linked, how many of you can identify the countries of 6, 8, 1, 13, or 15? Some of them, like #12, you may know from world events but others aren't so easy to identify unless you've memorized a real map.

1/5th of Americans can not find US on a map? Yeah right. That would imply that the 1/5th of Americans can not read, which is just not true.

I was thinking the same thing, but became curious about how they're asking the questions. I found what I believe is a similar test, which shows a more complete story IMO:

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/roper2006/pdf/FINALReport2006GeogLitsurvey.pdf

See page 24.

They're asking them to find these countries on an unlabeled map.

OK, maybe having labels defeats the purpose. People should still find the United States even on a map with no labels. However, wtf good are maps without any words!? But do you drive to Florida with a map that has no labels for the roads you're taking? Of course not. It is a stupid question that has no real world value, probably designed to get more funding or something.

U is clearly Riley's next incarnation. He's still persisting with his retarded multiple post syndrome and the need to bitch about Steams EULA whether it's relevant or not.

Correct.

Yup. I think you ruined his plans. He picked that new handle so you'd end up saying Riley is <U... well not quite that symbol.. hehe.

So what was your point again?

I think the bottom line is only the legit customers are complaining and they will also be the only ones jumping through the hoops. The people who want to pirate this will install it from their HD faster than you can say "activation".

With all these studies on the amount of money lost to piracy, I'd like to see how much they actually recoup with this solution, also taking into account the negative press it generates.

Yeah, I think it was two or three news burbs ago that I decided commenting on this game's expected downfall was going to be more fun than playing it.

Finally someone figured out, through some really innovative use of their console, that for people with this bug, the character (king, whatever) "accidentally" had been given a height map of 65,532. In other words, he was floating approximately near the sun.

I bet their art department decided to place him at a great height, symbolizing that you lowly peons are beneath him. Why don't you play the game that they intended you to play!?! Dammit!

From what I understand 1080p doesn't really make a whole lot of difference until the size of the TV you're looking at is 40" or larger.

Hehe, see what I mean? Now picture an entire forum HGL forum filled with that.

With what's already out there (real MMORPGs, free online action RPGs like GW, and dead ORPGs like D&D Online that tried to charge subscriptions for instanced everything), this thing doesn't have a chance in HELL. Well, not if they need subscription money to stay afloat.

Hello people...

FREE TO PLAY OUT OF THE BOX!

10 euros a month for EXTRA stuff over the FREE GAME is a good deal.

Oh come on now, you know the free people will be looking at the features being offered and get pissed off if it's something that offers an unfair advantage. You can't email items unless you pay? That sounds like something everyone would want to do. So you can join a guild but can't use their housing unless you pay?

That EXTRA stuff is just going to split the community in half. I can't wait to see the details and how it stacks up against something like Guild Wars.

That's almost equal to a US WoW subscription. But at least there's something different to discuss today.

- Instead of cropping the FOV for 4:3 displays and making all 4:3 owners mad in doing so

Well, ofcourse they would have been mad, you already started at 75. Cropping it then would have left… What? 40? What is that, like looking through a crack in a board or something?

Bahaha...

So a 170° FOV would be even better?

Nope, 179 degrees wouldn't look right on my WS display. Neither would 7 degrees. Although, I'd take a holodeck over any display thank you very much.

You said it yourself, there currently is no perfect FOV, but there is a comfortable range. They picked 75 degrees.. for everything, something you pointed out yourself. To me that's even more reason for allowing it to be changed by the user. The option should have been a trival matter, even if the "artists" highly recommended the default for the full gaming experience.

I think that's what gets me the most. Something that we take for granted in almost every FPS, a comfortable/flexible FOV, was absent in an otherwise excellent game. This should never have happened.

32. Re: No subject Aug 22, 2007, 19:52 MMORPGHoD

Has it ever occurred to anyone that it's narrow for a reason? Tight FOVs give a tunnel vision feeling, you have to play more panicky/cautious because you can't see as much around you at once. Especially for a horror game like Bioshock, doesn't this sound like something Irrational would want to do?

That sounds like one of the kotaku comments I saw, one of the more sane ones.

They possibly might have done this to make it more tense, just like id went with the darkness/flashlight approach. I'm not saying BioShock is like Doom 3, but I am saying some changes have an unintended cost for some users. Especially if some people are getting nauseous from it.

It's also interesting to note that 4:3 users don't experience the same "off" feeling that WS users do (or not nearly as much).. because they aren't experiencing the same zoomed in effect. This tends to indicate the tense theory isn't correct (or at least wasn't the same amount for all displays).
