Shiny happy collective holding hands.

Whether or not these companies still have anything left to contribute to PC gaming remains to be seen.

33. Re: how about 64bit vista? Oct 9, 2007, 20:34 MMORPGHoD

The actual threshold is closer to 2GB, since a single process (such as a game) can't use more than 2GB of address space on 32-bit Windows.

Actually I believe the limit is 3GB in Vista after using the increaseuserva trick with BCDEdit. The OS uses the remaining 1GB, so it's technically not a waste to have 4GB of RAM for 32-bit Vista.

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa906211.aspx

I still comfortably use 2GB of RAM myself, so we're not at the threshold for 64-bit Vista yet. Maybe when Recommended reaches 4GB.

I don't think you'd see any real improvements in 64-bit Vista over the 32-bit Vista. It really isn't worth the driver headaches IMO. When you need more than 4GB of RAM is the day 64-bit Vista will matter.

As much as I like to complain about the PS 3. The software backward compatibility is far more extensive than Microsoft's. It's like 90% compatible with the older ps2 games. So I don't think it's as big an issue as everyone is making it out to be.

And 90% would probably be fine for Europeans. HOWEVER, the PS3 that europeans get (their only official "european" choice) will have ....

0%

That's right, PS2 games won't run on a PS3. Period.

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/05/40gb-ps3-official-for-europe-no-backwards-compatibility-at-a/

That's the problem and I think they're nuts to do this in their already precarious position. Especially when they already have the software emulation solution worked out.

But that's the internet for you...

Yea, part of the problem is not reading everything about the subject first before replying :).

And last I read, Microsoft is still hoping to make a profit with their game sector, apparently something they've never done yet.

Yup, that's to be expected until the big selling games start showing up.

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/24/analysts-halo-3-shipping-4-2-million-first-week-xbox-may-final/

Analysts for the firm say that Microsoft will ship 4.2 million copies of Halo by the end of September. Even if all those were the normal $60 version that's still $252 million. Microsoft's fiscal quarter ends at the end of the week and the game is expected to bring in $170 million by then, meaning the Xbox division will have its first quarter of profitability since the launch of the original Xbox.

Again, that's where the money is going to be at for MS and Sony, not the console boxes.

You pointed out that there are 120 million PS2 owners. For those people, that's a reason to NOT have backwards compatibility, not TO have it.

Because the next time your PS2 breaks, and they DO break, you're going to get another PS2 rather than a PS3. That's one less reason to upgrade. If you're Sony, you want to have MORE reasons to upgrade, not less.

Yup, I'm a wii owner myself but am disappointed at the choices of games offered thus far. Nintendo might be making money on each box sold, but MS has the game selection lead right now, both existing and new (games sold is where the $ is supposed to be at). Plus, Sony exclusivity would seem to be a thing of the past.

And yea, if Sony does plan to remove backward compatibility, it's a dumb move for a company that's trying to catch up to the 360. I thought they were going to have their software emulation support for backward compatibility from now on?

Does this mean LoTRO isn't doing so great? Haven't heard much lately. That'd suck to have a lifetime subscription and see it go "poof".

It probably is a heat issue and your case temp is probably too hot for it. I'd RMA it again and check your temps before buying a new one that may eventually be burned out as well. Winter is almost here, so that should help with temps too.

Our source stated that Bungie is “tired of Making Halo, and didn’t want to do future Halo games.”

I'm too jaded to allow myself to believe such a thing. Next thing you know they're going to tell me Bungie is going to do another Myth game.

51. Re: People still buy sound cards? Oct 1, 2007, 12:23 MMORPGHoD

I'd like to think I'll be happy with onboard sound from the next MB I get. Otherwise, I'll stay with my M-Audio Revolution 7.1 card. It's technically not targeted for gaming like the creative cards are, but it works.. unlike my Audigy 2ZS. I cannot tolerate BSODs in the middle of my games, no matter how many bells and whistles the sound card might have. And yes, I spent a ton of time trying different drivers, PCI slot positions, and various IRQ combinations (by disabling various devices) before I gave up on my creative card.

Not my cup of tea, but you can get Season 1 at gogamer now for $24.90. Does steam have Season 1? I see if you bought the individual eps on steam it'd be around $54.
