Hmm.. installed this on Vista and patched to 1.12 and it still wants the disc.
Edit: Oh, apparently you have to copy d2xmusic and d2xvideo files from the expansion disc to the Diablo II directory for it to work.

People in that thread claiming they play for three hours and only see 5-10 people are full of crap. I've never been in a zone where I haven't run across at least a few people every couple minutes. You might not see too many people if you wander off into the higher level areas or are on an obscure quest that other people aren't on yet, and most of the time when you're doing the starting quests in an area or are near the town, you will see many people and will actually have to fight for mobs/quest mobs.

I like this game.
In combat the monsters (and you) can put shields either left, forward, or right. You can stack the shields to where you are open on the left and forward, but have all three on the right. When fighting a monster that has two or three shields in a direction, they take very little damage, so you do actually need to attack their weaker spots, otherwise the fights drag out way too long and you eventually die because you didn't pay attention. The enemies will move their shields over mid-fight if you score a critical hit or do a lot of damage on one of their less defended sides.
SO, say you have a combo that attacks their right side, but they've got all three shields on that side. You'd need to attack their left or forward sides to get them to move their shields, then perform the combo so the damage isn't resisted because of too much defense.
With that said, while you can run into most fights and just spam the exact same key order and win, if you are fighting something that is a few levels higher than you or is a boss your level or higher, it's really a good idea to watch their shields. It's easy to die if you don't on mobs like that.
As far as zoning goes, you will typically get the choice of going into a zone in regular difficulty or elite difficulty. I haven't gone into any of the elite modes yet, but I am assuming that it's the exact same zone (not instance) and quests, but with harder enemies... so more for teams doing quests that want to get more experience.
I'm level 25 at the moment and there are always lots of people in every zone I've been in, so the game definitely does not have an empty feel to it.

I really enjoyed Prey. The only thing I didn't like about it was the level design near the end of the game.. those last areas were a bit repetitive with the enemies popping on the ceilings over and over.

I haven't read the article, but it's kind of dumb how so many different people are now writing articles trying to justify why PC gaming is dying or why it isn't.
There will always be market for PC gamers, and there will always be games. Until you can swap out the GPU and CPU and upgrade the memory on your console every other year to get an even better experience, PC gaming will be around.
Sooner or later, the console gamers will not put up with the supposed 10 year life span that Sony (and Microsoft, to some extent) are expecting to pull out of their consoles. PC games already look unbelievably better than what any console game can offer, and they're wanting people to be ok with these same graphics 8 years from now?
I have a 360 and it's pretty fun, but nothing compares to a quality PC title.

That's what she gets for pulling facts out of her ass.
On the other hand... I wasn't very interested in this new Star Wars game until I saw this video. It looks very cool.
