Everything I read about this game sounds absolutely horrible. They're now claiming expertise in MMO development because they play WoW; so obviously they know what they're doing! The developers of the other WoW clones played it too, they also failed miserably. Sprinkling some licensed content on top of another WoW clone has never worked.
The biggest problem might be the license. Star Wars is about megalomania - the protagonist has super powers and is the most important person in the universe and personally knows anyone else that is important. Emotionally stable adults really don't need this. Bioware does this in all their games too. This doesn't work in an MMO. It definitely doesn't work in a Star Wars MMO. If Jedi are stronger than everyone else, then the other classes are irrelevant and everyone will want to be a Jedi. If Jedi can be easily killed by space boars and space bandits with pointed sticks, then it isn't Star Wars. SWG already discovered this. |

Jerykk wrote on Jul 4, 2010, 04:37: Regenerating health is lame because it negates the significance of getting hit. With health regen, the only hit that matters is the one that kills you. Every other hit can be shrugged off by hiding for a few seconds. When I play a shooter with regenerating health, I'll often just let enemies hit me so I can line up a good headshot. I don't care if I get hit because I can just cover, wait for my health to regenerate, then pop out and get some more headshots. Rinse and repeat until all enemies are dead. With finite health, every hit counts because you can only heal yourself a limited number of times. As such, you are forced to play better.
As for quicksaving, I can't really agree that it should be an option for all games. Much like regenerating health, quicksave effectively negates any intensity because it removes the penalty for failure. Certain genres rely on the risk of failure for most of their appeal; racing games, stealth games, horror games, etc. Imagine if you could quicksave during a race, then just reload that save if you screwed up. Intensity = gone. Some people will argue that they should be able to play games however they please but I disagree with that. I don't believe people should play games with God mode on, I don't believe people should use walkthroughs, I don't believe people should quicksave before taking any risk. If you read a book, you should it from beginning to end. You shouldn't skip chapters or read the book in reverse. Same with movies. Games, movies, books, etc, are designed to convey a specific experience and you shouldn't ruin that experience for yourself. I'd agree about regenerating health. If it's available at all, it should be through items that aren't easy to obtain; like the implant in Deus Ex or certain rings in Baldur's Gate 2. Constant, fast regen is just a crutch for lazy developers and bad players.
Letting the player save the game whenever they want has to be allowed though. A linear rail shooter with a checkpoint every 90 seconds may not need it, but those games are horrible and don't belong on the PC anyway. Adults shouldn't be punished for sudden time constraints, due to work or family, and games developed with check points tend to be worse (more consolized and formulaic) than ones that aren't. Far Cry vs. Half Life for instance. Something utterly bewildering, like Stalker, would be completely unplayable without the ability to save whenever you want. |

| I was going to say "the Steam sales will sort this out...", but it appears the article is primarily referring to console brick & mortar sales. |

| I wonder what it actually does? I thought maybe it charges up for faster construction but the build times at the end seemed normal to me. |

| They have the same problems GoG does: a small catalog of games and a competitor who already has the lowest prices. |

Have you tried the "offline practice" mode? I did a full round and got 15 items! No idea if it's a bug or just a present for playing the new content. I used them for hat fodder.
The new items aren't really necessary. My demo still uses the standard load out and my soldier only carries the equalizer. |

| I'd been hoping to see Thief 3 and missed the 2 hour San Andreas special during the big Rockstar sale. I've bought a sickening number of games so far. |

| I have a quad core system with Windows 7 64 bit and about 75 games on Steam (including KOTOR), and I've never had any recurring crash problems. I've had trouble installing a few properly, but it was usually resolved by just running Steam as admin. |

Every consumer wants to pay the lowest possible price for their goods. Steam, especially with their crazy sales, is usually the one offering it.
They have a much larger selection of games, including a lot of the older titles that GoG has, and quite a few of those are currently cheaper on Steam as well. Competing with that is going to be very difficult. |

They need a bigger catalog of games, or better prices, to compete coexist with Steam. Charging more for abandonware than Steam charges for modern games isn't going to work in the long run. |

| TF3 is being developed as a generic fantasy MMO? Meet the Medic & Pyro movies are done? It's probably just the engineer update. |

| I wonder if the Sims will show up on Steam eventually? The most daunting aspect of the series is the immense quantities of plastic and cardboard the player is required to maintain. |

| I grabbed Flatout, The Void, and the Guild 2 pack. I'd waited for Steam to get the Guild 2 for months and was happy to see it arrive at 50% off last week, but decided to wait and hope for a 1 day sale. The extra 25% off nearly paid for the other 2 games I bought today. |

| The X-COM pack was on sale for $2 in January. UFO Afterlight is also on sale for $2.49, which was probably the best of the recent sequels. |
